I visited the Toronado for the first time yesterday. I was a little worried after reading some of the reviews on here. I was expecting an absolute dump with rude bartenders and a phenomenal beer selection. I was very pleased to discover that it wasn't nearly as bad as some people made it out to be.
The atmosphere is that of a dive bar. The walls are covered with magnums, labels, coasters, beer signs, old tap handles, etc. It is dimly lit but not as bad as I expected. I went in on 6PM on a Sunday and the front room was full but the back was empty. We were able to go into the back room and have a conversation at normal voice levels. It's not the cleanest place you'll ever see but it's not bad. The clientele was just your regular 30-something year old lower Haight San Franciscans. Again, nothing bad about this at all. There was also a dog in the bar which was kind of cool.
I can only review the service from a sample size of one. When I went to the bar the bartender came right over and took my order. She wasn't exactly friendly but she was fine. No problems here at all.
The selection is simply amazing. Around 45 beers on tap, lots of local stuff and imported Belgians and Germans. This is why people come here. All in all I would say that it was a good experience. I will definitely be stopping in whenever I can.
