On draught at the brewpub, Monkey's Fist IPA is a brassy pale yellow with a white head leaving heavy, foamy lace.

Smell has a big, spicy herbal hop nose, floral and citrus notes as well as some fusels (IIRC this was stronger then the 4.5% listed).

Taste is also rather hot, but hoppy enough to temper the fusels, with the same hop flavors as the aroma.

Mouthfeel is smooth, oily and dry, with creamy carbonation and a medium light body.

Drinkability is pretty good, but would be better if they dialed back the heat.

Appearance - Clear golden color with a creamy off-white head.

Aroma - Light grassy and fresh cut pine aroma.

Taste - Smooth caramel flavor up front followed by a light pine taste that finished clean.

Overall - Served at cellar temperature this one is smooth yet does not compromise on taste.

The beer was orange with a white head. It had a hazy appearance and had a hop aroma. The flavor was of fruity fresh hops. There was a residual sweetness, but no DMS. Also present was a yeasty character. Overall this was balanced with a bitter hop finish and left a yummy sticky malty finish.

m: real smooth in the cask; thick and creamy

d: this one is too mild in flavor even for a uk pale

Had on my trip to Denver.

A: Pours a golden almost copper colored hue with an above average head. Okay retention and some lace.

S: Starts off with light caramel malt with hints of citrus and pine.

T: Rather weak and somewhat watered down. Very similar to the nose, Light caramel sweetness with a dash of citrus hops.

M: Rather thin and watery. Not as much carbonation as the head would indicate.

D: Not really. This is one of the weakest and least complex IPA's I have had. May be a good gateway beer for someone venturing over from BMC, but not one many IPA fans will enjoy.

Enjoyed at the brewery during GABF '08 weekend. This is the beer that started my GABF weekend and it kicked things off to a good start. The beer is fairly moderate throughout with a biscuity, well-attenuated malt character giving a light hint of caramel. Hops are very moderate with hints of pine, flowery, and grassy notes. Dry-hopped character gives a lot of grass flavors to the mild body, making it a bit astringent. Attenuation gives a bit of grain flavors late. The beer ultimately proves to be qutie within the range for styles, but I'm expecting a bit more.

Pours a very nice dark copper color with good head and lacing. It has a nice hoppy scent, although not as strong as most IPAs, it is well balanced. Good taste, slightly jerky, not as well balanced as the aroma, but nice, nonetheless. Not the smoothest beer, but it's not rough, either.

This struck me as a decidedly average IPA. It was a rich orange-copper color with a nice layer of head atop it. Aroma was faintly of hops, but also had a significant hop character. Flavor was very medium bitterness...not all that hoppy for an IPA and rather malty. Much more mild-mannered than I prefer my IPAs. Mouthfeel was unremarkable.

Beer glass wasn't "beer clean." I wish it were. I had this on-tap at Wynkoop.

From my notes of July 29, 2007

The pour showed me a deep gold with a 2 finger head of foam that lasted a long time.

The smell was delicate but I did get some hoppiness, mostly grass.

The taste had grassy hops up front but they were on the mild side. Midway through, some caramel malt showed up to balance the hops and I noticed some nutty tones. The finish leans toward the bitter side with some grapefruit. Nice but very smooth. Maybe just a tad too smooth.

Bottom line: Not overly exciting for an IPA but if you're looking for a smooth drinker, by all means give this one a try.

Poured a little hazy & amber with a 1" white head. Great lacing & good head retention

S: Citric hops, grass & a little malt

T: Smack of citric hops up front then a nice malt base. Breadyness comes through as it warms. Finishes hoppy & a little fruitty. More malt base please!

MF: Medium bodied, a little spritzzy & balance was good

Drank really easy, not a great EPA, but pretty nice

This was brought to me with a foamy, bone-white head. It was a deep amber color with copper highlights. It had a decent hoppy nose and there was a good hop presence on the tongue, but the mouthfeel was thin. The finish had a good, but not overwhelming, hoppiness. Also, it seemed a bit clear for a cask-conditioned beer.

Ordered on-tap at the Wynkoop Brewery in downtown Denver. Poured a nice, clear orange color. Small, white head on it. Faint aromas of orange peel, which balances out the hops. As expected from an IPA, the hops dominate the flavors, and they linger after tasting. Not much carbonation - even felt a bit flat in the mouth. Good drinkability, though; a fine example of the style.
