classic hefe type, cloudy pale yellow with an inch of white foam. looks almost too cloudy, very dense and thick for what I know is supposed to be a lighter brew. nose of banana and clove from the yeast, tons of white wheat malt, and a refreshing coolness to it. some lemon on the taste to combat the banana, a really nice combination. too much yeast in suspension though, this one drinks a little heavier than it should. also perfumy for some reason, something that has plagued all the wheat beers wynkoop makes. clean finishing for the style. more body than I want, but pretty good carbonations. nice in the winter, but im sure this would be a it too much in the summer time, to much heft. overall a decent regular brew from wynkoop, but could use some fine tuning.

A bit darker than your average hefeweizen, this was more like a yellow and amber mixture of a color, plenty hazy. Not much lace or head retention going on. Banana, yeast and clove, definitely smells like a hefeweizen.

Taste offers a mild spiciness to compliment the banana and clove. A little bit lighter in heft than how it looks. Tinge of vanilla to it. Floral at times. Definitely better than the blue moon stuff down the street that sells by the palate. Obvious wheat stickiness and breadiness in the mouthfeel. Pretty smooth, they keep the carbonation a little lower on this one I would guess after having had multiple of their other beers.

I thought it was decent. Not my style, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone who does like to venture down this path.

Wynkoop Brewing "Wixa Weiss"

5.0%. Served on-draught into a pilsner glass at Wynkoop brewing in summer 2012. Reviewed from notes. Expectations were above average.

A: Pours a one finger head of beige colour, nice cream, decent thickness, and above average retention. Colour is a hazy orange. Nontransparent; non-opaque. Vibrant and inviting. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Sm: Banana, clove, wheat, and some cream. A light to mild strength aroma.

T: Fresh orange peel and light cream over a wheat foundation. Clean and crisp. Tasty. Simple but very enjoyable. I like it. Hints of clove, but no real yeast characteristics (arguably, to its detriment). Well balanced and built. Very much built to style. There's no real experimentation or boundary pushing here, but there doesn't need to be.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Refreshing and light on the palate. Slightly overcarbonated. Sips nicely on a hot summer's day.

Dr: Very drinkable. Built as a lovely refreshing little brew. I'd certainly have it again, though its simplicity does hold it back. Fairly priced. I wouldn't recommend it to friends, but it's worth trying without a doubt.

Enjoyed at the brewery

A: single finger head with nice lace, murky golden color

S: wheat and sweet banana

T: taste is your typical wheat, clove and banana

M: light body and mod to high carbonation.

Overall: standard weiss. It was right on for the genre.

I had this one on tap the other afternoon at the brewery. Poured a hazy light yellow color, with a rocky white head. Aromas of light banana, bread dough and yeast. Light bodied and very easy to drink, with bananas, bread dough and a light yeastiness. Good, but kind of empty/hollow.

Appearance: golden, cloudy, opaque, thin white head.

Smell: malt, yeast, clove, banana

Taste: banana, coriander, orange, citrusy,

Mouthfeel: light, hef like

Drinkability: not the best ir worst hef I have ever had. A decent beer I could totally see myself drinking this on the rare hot day in Denver after a Rockies game.

Presentation: Poured from tap into a pint glass.

A: Color is fine for a hefeweizen, but almost no head. What is there goes away immediately, no lacing.

S: Nothing special here either. No banana or clove which I prefer for the style, some sour smells and spices.

T: Taste is way too sour for a hefeweizen. It's almost funky and not really in a great way. Spices are there, but they don't make up for the bad funk sourness. I don't think it was bad, just how they made this one and I don't like it.

M: Undercarbonated, not creamy, and really not much to like here. Weight was about all that was ok.

D: I couldn't finish the pint, but almost did. I could drink it which is why it got a 2.

I was severely disappointed after reading that Wynkoop was one of the better locals to try here on BA. This was just bad, and not recommended.

Tried at Wynkoop 4 Feb 2009.

Very cloudy golden color. Small white long lasting head. Moderate carbonation. Aroma has lots of clove, some banana. Taste is also of clove and banana. Slight yeastiness and wheat. Medium heavy body. Some astringency in finish. Moderate alcohol.

This was the best of the five I sampled that night.

Poured a nice dark yellow color, with a bit of head and not much lacing. It had a nice malty/straw-like scent, but nothing very strong. Good taste, a nice wheat flavor with good banana/clove tones, but a little too much there without enough malt/wheat. It did go down quite smoothly.

A good time to try this beer. After a ball game, semi hot outside, next to the light rail in Denver
Pours a light amber, hazy with a 1 finger white head. Head did not stay long and simmered down to a slight, patchy film.
Smell is like old socks, and sweet malt. Ick
Tastes like a sweet, malted wheat beer. Not much citrus or refreshing crispness. Other than that, not a bad beer. Could use less maltiness.
Not a very refreshing aftertaste. Needed some water to wash this down.

This was served in a pint glass at the brewpub. It has a cloudy golden color with a head that settles quickly, but leaves a decent lace. It has a nice banana nose with hints of malt and almost no trace of hops. There is a nice yeasty banana character to the taste, but it's very malty sweet with a slight hop finish (almost unnoticeable). The body is medium-light with high carbonation.

Overall, this is not a bad for a German-style hefeweizen. However, it's a little too sweet for my particular taste. I usually prefer a more balanced version of the style. I'd rather go for some of the brewpub's other offerings (like the Railyard).
