Ah,Wynkoop… so much history… Beer Drinker of the Year… Denver Mayor… Once co-owned Upstream in Omaha… sparked the revitalization of LoDo… and now I finally pay a visit.

I’ve seen this kind of brewpub before. It looks like Upstream or Court Avenue or, frankly, many other brewpubs in the US. You know it as well as I do; lots of wood, kind of English and old worldly but clearly a restaurant. The lively bar is to the right on the main floor (I didn’t explore beyond that), fairly large with seating scatter throughout. I didn’t understand why there weren’t bathrooms on the main floor? Or was there and I was too stupid/tired to find them?

Anyway… I visited Saturday of GABF 2007 in the afternoon. It was not busy at all. Our party of 6 was seated right away. The service as good but our waitress substituted a beer that was order for something “similar.” Somehow a cream ale and some random dark ale are the same thing. That is crap… or laziness. I would have sent the beer back.

The food menu was very limited, not much sounded very good. However, I settled for the wings and they were tasty. Everybody in the group liked the food. As for the beer… yawn. I had the Wiezenbock which tasted like a strong Hefe. Nobody seemed that keen on the beer, nobody ordered a second… even with a solid selection on paper. Also, $4 for a pint seemed high.

I was neither impressed nor disappointed. I can’t say I need to return as frankly the beer wasn’t that good. Maybe I was being a mega snob or something… no, it just wasn’t that great. Good. Solid. Respectable, sure, but this is Denver. I can get great beer here. This kind of brewpub works in second rate beer cities, not Denver. Maybe I was disappointed…

Decent beer with poor service. Only stopped in for a small tasting.

Their Belgian IPA and Chili beer were standouts. Chili beer was a great session beer at 4.2%.

Cool spot in one of the old downtown areas of Denver. Parking is a bit of a bitch, depending on when you visit, but it's a great area to walk through, weather permitting. Multi-leveled building, with bar area to the right of the entrance, and seating to the left. Bathrooms are downstairs, where there is also some vintage furniture, barrels, and you can spy on the brewing equipment. Outdoor seating overlooking the adjacent street, too, which is great when the weather is nice. Bartenders were friendly and prompt. There were about 10 beers on tap when we were there, I believe, as well as a nitro tap. Beer to go in growlers. Full gastropub menu, although we didn't eat, so I can't really comment on that. Definitely worth a stop on your Denver travels.
