Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Denison’s Weissbier has been brewed for twenty years in Toronto. From 1989 until 2003 it was brewed along with several other popular Bavarian beer styles at the brewpub on Victoria Street. While brewed there, it was known as Weizen.

Our Weissbier is an authentic Bavarian style wheat beer and has attracted an extremely loyal following and wonderful reviews from some of the world's top beer writers. In 2002 Denison's Wheat Beer became rated #1 in the world in the 'German Hefeweizen' category on ratebeer.com, and has remained in that place to this date.

Denison's Weissbier is true to style, served unfiltered and is very refreshing. Although its only ingredients are malted barley, malted wheat, imported hops, water and yeast, the special Bavarian yeast produces the classic but unusual flavours of a true wheat beer. Flavour notes such as banana, clove and vanilla are all present.

Can provided by blutt59.

The beer pours a hazy milky yellow with a white head. The aroma is very strong bananas with not much clove. The flavor is more of the same with bananas and wheat being the most dominant. Medium, soft mouthfeel and low carbonation.

It's been ages since I've had Denisons - used to be on tap in KW but the bar closed. Some cans picked up on a T.O. road trip will have to suffice.

Poured into a hefe glass. A slightly opaque golden brew, leaves about a half inch head that receded all too soon. A few flecks of yeast sediment make their way to the bottom of the glass.

Nose is typical hefe: banana, cloves, citrus, wheat.

Tastes like a hefe should; all the proper pieces are in the puzzle box. A slight apple taste and a mild graininess distinguishes Denisons from other major hefes. Cloves take second fiddle to the banana esters. Other than that, it's pretty damned good. Finishes dry.

Tart, aggressive carbonation at first, but a more appealing equilibrium is hit after a moment. Medium bodied.

If this were available more outside of T.O., I'd drink this all the time. Good local hefe. Went down incredibly smooth, no strangeness or funky flavors to be found. Just a good, solid hefe. Would love to have this on tap again.

Pours a very slightly cloudy yellow. The aroma is a little yeasty with a hint of banana. The taste reminds me of bananas more than anything else. The aftertaste remains in my mouth a little longer than I'd like. The yeasty taste is kind of disconcerting after a while.

This is apparently Canada's best weissbier - about time I got to try it, before tearing into Cafe Volo's more potent offerings...

This beer appears a hazy light peach colour, with three fingers of foamy, creamy white head, which leaves a bit of specked lace around the glass as it slowly recedes. It smells of soft grainy wheat, banana, and some mild white pepper. The taste is quite fruity and sweet - apple and pear, mostly - over a very soft wheatiness, and light, dry earthy hops. The carbonation is moderate, but fades quite quickly, the body decently weighted, smooth, and fruity, and it finishes slightly off-dry, with a smidgen of yeast.

Well, even though I am not a big fan of the style, this is still the best weissbier that I have ever had - smooth, tasty, and very enjoyable to drink.

Cloudy and translucent, the body is a shade of pale yellow-orange. Liquid sunshine - the colour actually reminds me of Sunny Delite. Loads of visible carbonation and massive pile of thick, white, and well-retained head which leaves some lacing behind. There are visible yeast floaties circulating in the glass, rising upwards with the carbonation and falling back down again. Banana aroma seems a little muted at first, but comes forward with a bit of warmth and aeration. There's some slightly tart lemon, some clove, and a little bit of what could be bubblegum or vanilla. There really isn't much to the aroma at all. Tastes of banana with lots of tangy lemon coming through midway. Clove isn't overbearing, and a little bit gummy towards the end. Medium bodied and well-carbonated, it manages to feel both light and substantial at the same time. Very refreshing and easy drinking. I like my weizen a little more candy-like though, and remember it being more to my taste when I had this on tap. Still, a pretty solid hefeweizen.

Thanks to Eat for this wonderful Hefeweizen, much appreciated! 473ml can poured into a Laurelwood pint glass.

A- Hazy straw, golden sun drenched fields of wheat... a finger of quickly dissipating head. No lacing to speak of.

S- Banana... lots and lots of banana... hints of clove and bubble gum. My lady friend loves it, I have to agree it smells wonderful.

T- A little banana, a suggestion of bubble gum... its has a wonderful almost floral component... chamomile? Tastes like delicious.

M- Nice Carbonation, light body, refreshing. This beer was made for summer.

D- Exceptional! This one is a session-able summertime jam! You have a BBQ and you need beer? Pick up this lil gem.

Dear Mr Denison, We would like some of your beer please.

Sincerely, British Columbia

Have had this periodically about town, over the years. Thought it more of a banana smoothie with a high level of carbonation and pronounced yeast, like a yogurt kafir beverage. Nice appearance, like the Pizza Port hefe that is fruit and then bannana. Canadians like this for the bannana and mouthfeel, and its a nice one.

I just had this on tap today at Volo and had to re-review, since it's apparently a completely different beer on tap.

Poured with a massive, bright-white meringue-like head, Denison's Weissbier is a glowing golden colour, hazy and opaque. Sheets of rocky lace all down the glass. Awesome retention. There could be no improvement.

Big smell, featuring lemony citrus, wheat, yeast and a pleasant astringency. Musty with a slight banana scent. Nice.

The taste is lots of wheat, citrus, a touch of banana and spice and a bit of dust/must. Prickly bitterness. Wheaty finish. Pretty unique in terms of weissbiers I've had.

Awesome full body for a weiss. Refreshing high carbonation. Great feel.

Completely different brew on tap and canned! The canned version is only a shadow of the tap version, in my opinion. This is extremely sessionable and one of the very best, if not the best, weissbier I've had.

---

Canned version from 02-11-2010:

Poured into a weizen glass. Dull, straw-coloured and opaque with cloudiness, its solid cover of bright white head fades to a ring around the glass. Barely any lacing. 3.5

Yeast, freshly baked bread, wheat, peppery, light hops, citrus, a little funky astringency. Only a touch of the banana you would expect in such a beer. Nice smell, but I could use some more presence. 3.5

Wheat, spices (coriander), a pleasant astringency, slight sweetness. Decent hop presence on the finish. I didn't think it was all that great at first but it grew on me. I like how it's a little more bitter than usual for a weiss beer, leaving a slightly drying finish. No alcohol present. 4.0

The feel is pretty nice. Medium body and lightly carbonated.4.0

I don't know...in my opinion there are a couple much better weiss beers in Quebec I would put on the Canadian top 25 ahead of this one. Still, this is quite a drinkable brew and one that I'm happy exists in Ontario, considering the relative absence of decent beers here. 4.0

It's nice to finally see this local gem on the LCBO shelves instead of just on tap. I will be enjoying many at home in the future.

It pours a deep, hazy golden yellow, nice and opaque as expected of the stile. A massive pure white head crowns the elixir lasting well past the halfway mark. Chunks of yeast settled on the bottom with a few catching the sides of the glass.

All the usual suspects for the style showed up in the nose. Right up front were hits of citrus, clove and bubblegum. A mild clove presence cam through accompanied by strong sour apple/ripe fruit esters. A suggestion of bread dough from the yeast came to mind followed by some wet phenol notes.

A big punch of spice and smooth citrus notes were tasted right away, cloves and cinnamon. Mild tartness akin to green apples lent a very refreshing note to the already thirst quenching brew. The spice flavours continues with a nice biting pepper taste, cayenne like in nature. Yeast flavours crept into the brew near the finish, which was overall very clean. Not too much in the way of hop flavour, as to be expected, the balance is there though. A nice body just as one would expect of a Weissbier rounds out this fine local offering.

Overall a damn fine beer and a dead ringer of the style. It's good to see some solid offerings locally made. I can't wait for spring and summer to drink this en mass in my backyard.

Purchased at the LCBO 473ml can for around $2.60/ea. Served at 5deg C in a draught glass.

A- Not too bad. Opens ok with a good 1" head and off clear golden color

S- Not much here at all

T- Pretty good. Nice carbonation. Good malt/wheat beer. Very light on the tongue. Very little coriander.

M- Excellent! Like the creaminess and tart in one. Very enjoyable.

O- Very good. Will buy again. Nice blend of blend of North American and Wheat beer. Hope word gets around more of this lovely beer

Food Pairing

This nice little blend beer went well with... Greek salad with chicken

Enjoy!

At c'est what, poured one finger into a pint glass, cloudy wheat orange colour, creamy patchy lacing. Decent retention as it dwindled to a creamy collar.

Smell is wheat malt, citrus, a little earthy

Taste is wheat malt, orange and a hint of banana, peppery, mild hops.

Light to medium body, sour and dry and mildly bitter.

Very good, true to the style, however slightly disappointing given the hype, does not stand up to some of the german wheats I can grab down the street anytime, nevertheless, damn close to world class.

Toronto's Wheat beer since 1990..more on can.

a-cloudy pale orange, honey yellow on edges of glass. two finger bone white head. fluffy head.

a-very grassy smelling. spicy yeast aroma. citrus hops. a little on the fizzy cardboardy side of things overall. its in the malt i'm getting the cardboard smell. not a big fan. smells avery ascerbic.

fresh in the mouth. slightly more acidic fizzy then i like but not terrible. and the aftertaste brings the cardboard back. not strong and offputting but its there.

there is some interesting stuff going on here overall but for me its that malt profile that is knocking this down a bit for me. not sure i'd seek this one out again.

Thanks liamt07!

Appearance. Pours a golden-straw with just a bit of haze and a half finger of bubbly white head.

Smell. Cloves, toasty wheat, a little bananna.

Taste. Again, cloves and toasty wheat but less bananna than the smell. A little bit of nice sour lemon that is actually the highlight in flavours for me.

Mouthfeel. Medium-low in body and medium carbonation. Seems a little bit thin and carbonation isn't as smooth as others of the style.

Overall. Heffe's are'n really my thing, but that being said it smells and tastes great for the style.

Tap at C'est What: Cloudy light dirty beige color weizen with a small foamy head with average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of dominating wheat malt is very refreshing. Taste is also dominated by loads of wheat with some very subtle notes of cloves. This is missing some banana ester which I usually look for in this style. Body is quite full with good carbonation. I very enjoyed that beer but I can't say that it is necessarily the best weizen I have ever tasted.

Big thanks to TheSevenDuffs for the CAN!

Pours a very nice hazy, light sun color. Bright white finger of head, nice lace. Big clove and banana aroma, with a slight spiciness and a touch of citrus. Smells damn good. Less clove and banana on the taste, but it's there. More citrus juices and breadinesss. Crisp feel, nice carbonation.

I have my favorite styles, but a well made beer is a well made beer, and this is definitely a well made beer!

This one was sent graciously to me by liamt07, an awesome trader. Cheers buddy!

Yellow color beer with some orange notes. Head is white and disappear quickly. Hazed and very opaque.

Aroma is fruity (cloves and bananas). Typical of a Hefeweizen. Inviting.

Taste shows notes of orange and the typical hefeweizen taste (cloves and bananas).

Smooth and very effervescent. Almost no bitterness too. Very drinkable and refreshing. A nice hefeweizen.

On tap at C'est What. This is the best Hefe I have had to date. Very fresh and full of flavour. Has a cloudy orange/yellow color. Great retention and lacing.

Smells of bananas, yeast, citrus and other fruits. The yeast and banana scent becomes stronger as I drink.

After a long day of walking around Toronto this just hit the spot. Very refreshing and smooth. Tastes of bananas, citrus, spices and yeast. If I could buy a keg to take with me I honestly would.
