Nice MacMenamins pub( the second in Salem)..set up in an old ,old bank building 1860 it says above the door. Inside its n ice and dark with authentic old style wooden floorboards, walls are brickwork. The decor seems to be Belgian/French.Tables and booths and a very high bar!. Service was prompt, if laid back in the traditional MacMenamins style. Good selection of most of the MacMs beers..only a couple of guest taps Dead Guy Ale and Pilsner Urquell..plus one macro Coors light. Good bar food..with extra vegetarian stuff thrown in..I had a Vietnamese Style BBQ pork plate,,quite good. Overall a nice laid back place to have apint or two .( there is live music most nights)

In Salem for a few days for work. Figured this historical site was a must visit. I'm glad I did. The atmosphere was very nice, especially for a Tuesday night. The beer selection was average as there were about a half dozen brews from which to choose. I tried a couple and wasn't impressed too much by either. The food on the other hand was worth the trip. It was some good stuff, and reasonably priced too. The waiter I had was decent, a little stiff considering the laid back atmosphere accompanied by Grateful Dead tunes. There was another server wandering the floor who was more that bubbly as she made her way around cheering up the otherwise timid crowd. If you get a chance you should check this joint, its worth it.

Atmosphere- Housed in beautiful old brick building and decorated with cozy oriental rugs, this place has a nice, comfortable and homey feel.

Quality- Tasty pub grub and beers brewed on premises. I've been here twice and enjoyed everything.

Service- Friendly and attentive

Selection- Basic pub faire of good quality as well as daily specials. The kitchen area looks tight, so probably just as well that they don;t try to do too much.

Value- Two meals and four pints, not at happy hour were $33. I'd call that reasonable.

You know....
I disagree with other reviewers.

This place was wonderful.
The menu was very original and inventive. Everything appears to be 'home made'....prices were very reasonable.
Service was great and servers were knowlegable.
Full bar....own brews....own wines....some hard spirits that they distill themselves.
Good entertainment. Ambience was incredible...the building is the original State Treasury for Oregon and all of the late 1800's still exists in the place, right down to the bathrooms.
Patrons appear to be regulars and it was wonderful to see how everyone got what they wanted.
One table had a couple splitting a bottle of wine.
Another had a pitcher of beer they were draining.
Another had one drinking a glass of wine...another a beer...and someone else at the table drinking a martini.
Great fun and everything a neighborhood brewpub could hope to be.

The other McMenamins place in Salem. This one has a large open dining area with booths on one side. If you want to people watch and listen to music this is much better than Thompsons across town.

Pretty much the same beers but more going on as it is closer to the government offices and downtown. Check out the McMenamins web site and look at the event schedule. They have live blues, jazz, folk, and other music. Kinda of a neighborhood gathering place.

Outside is a nice cool garden setting for quiet conversation.

Beers are typical McMenamins and the food is like most others.
