Glass: Ayinger willi glass

Pours a 1cm tall mass of beige-colored foam, made up of small to medium-sized bubbles, somewhat dense-looking. Retention is average, about one minute in length, fading to a thin ring around the body of the beer. Lacing is present, though rather minimal, a few small dots and lines cling haphazardly to the sides of the glass. The body is a deep golden orange, bordering on brown, with light bringing out brighter golden orange hues and slight yellow highlights. Carbonation is visible through the transparent body, modest in activity and number.

Aroma of sweet, light caramel malt with strong toasted bread undercurrents and a moderate herbal, German hop presence.

Flavor is heavily influenced towards toasted bread, nuts, and woodsy hops, much less caramel/cocoa/dark malt than Uerige's doppelsticke, more reminiscent of a strong bock than a doppelbock, if we're thinking of lager terms. Front of palate experiences toasted, lighter-colored breads with modest graininess and balanced caramelized malt sugar sweetness, hints of dried brown figs, and a slightly herbal German hop touch. Mid-palate is of deep, rich toasted bread and balanced caramelized malt sugar sweetness, dried brown figs, light graininess, toasted nuts, and modest European hop herbal flavors and bitterness. Back of palate features rich caramel malt sweetness, lightly toasted nuts, and herbal Germanic hops with less emphasis on toasted bread and grains, though these are present as well. Aftertaste is of toasted bread, caramel malt sweetness, lightly toasted nuts, and mild European hop bitterness with an herbal edge.

Beer is medium bodied, with medium to medium-low levels of carbonation, bordering on the line of fizzy, but never crossing it. The result is a lightly effervescent, then foamy and smooth mouthfeel. Ethanol is not detectable at all in this 8.5% ABV brew. Closes semi-dry, with medium level stickiness clinging to the palate.

Scarlet-bronze bodied with loads of suspended particles. It's basically a sno-globe. Low-slung head with meager lacework. I fear this ages fast and poorly.
The nose mostly dispels my fear, with it's caramel apple, cherry, doughy, sweet, clean maltiness, a touch of orange rind bitterness.
The mouth brings caramel apples, replete with a peanuts. Black cherries, general sweet, with an almost vanilla essence, but carrying a tart edge thats almost raspberry. Doughy breads, a little fuzzy yeast slurry interference, and a small measure of grassy hops for balance.
As much matter as is floating through the liquid, it never seems to impact the mouthfeel. It's full, but lighter than it should be, given the strength.
This is on the cusp of something special. Clean the particles out and remove the light chunky sourdough/vinegar-y from the yeast flavor, and this becomes one to talk about and search out. It's $11 a six-pack, and probably worth it, even with these gripes.

Another single scored on a recent trip to Minnesota.

A - Pours a hazy copper colour with an amber hue, thumb of head with some retention and no real lacing.

S - Scent is dominated by sweet caramel and burnt sugar, hints of plums and dried fruit, with some noticeable booze on the finish.

T - The yeast adds a fruitiness that boasts dark fruit, raisin notes, hints of cloves and peppery spice. The burnt sugar and caramel flavours linger on the palette alongside pumpernickel rye bread and a touch of ABV heat. This one has a flavour profile reminiscent of a Belgian Dark Ale, but more mellow.

M - Medium bodied, smooth, dry on the finish with a touch of ABV heat.

O - A tasty Altbier which definitely leans more on the fruity side of the style. ABV is well hidden and the flavour profile is robust. A worthy acquisition and I will definitely source out another bottle next time for trades.

Deep saturated copper orange, a sticky collar of lace crowns the glass, forming intricate webs over the course of the glass. Some suspended micro sediment hazes it up a bit.

Rich nutty caramel and pipe tobacco, über malty.

Sweet and sticky, tobacco, almond and walnuts, mild hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Robust and silky, a warming malty blanket envelops and settles over the palate nicely. Full bodied with lower levels of carbonation. Pleasant malty aftertaste of woody tobacco and brown sugar. Very flavorful, and somewhat rich with toffee and notes of caramelized sugars. A tasty beer that was pretty impressive, hope to run across more of this soon.

Picked this up in Madison, WI on a recent trip to the Great Lakes area.

Pours a brilliantly clear amber with lighter orange highlights around the liquid's edge. Foam stand, initially 2-3 fingers tall, receded down to a rocky half-finger thichkness while tracing an attractive pattern on the glass.

Rich, malty aromas nod their way with caramel, and sweet toasty bread. Plum and grape-like fruitiness reminiscent of munich malts. Presence of alcohol is noted.

Malty-sweet with a strong caramel and toasted bread quality. Bitterness is moderate to moderately high. The medium, dry finish leaves the malt character on the palette.

Medium-light bodied, moderately carbonated. Smooth.

Overall this is a richly malty, well-balanced brew. I'd like to see more noble hop presence but age could be a factor as this beer was purchased 3 months ago (and lacks freshness dating).

Rush River Uber Alt Altbier. …I'm wondering why they translate "bier" into "beer", but leave the "alt" the same on that label? They don't want to say "old beer?"
8.5% ABV.
Dark amber hue, slim, soon gone head.

Aroma: caramel malt and light spice, sweet and slightly fruity. Chocolate covered raisins and carob. Mmm.

Taste: there's that tasty malt again, there's that mmm, mmm caramel and nougat. A little sweet, a little dry. Toasty. Medium bodied. Long, sweet, dry, toasty finish. Boom, boom, boom, it's hitting on all cylinders, just as the alcohol peeks in a tad.

Drinks down delightfully. Dry, and flavorful, and tasty, tasty, tasty. Another nice one from Rush River….pretty good "old beer."

Poured from a 12oz bottle into an enormous shot glass.

Pale Princeton orange liquid capped by a fat finger of ivory. Decent retention, pasty lacing, faint legs.

Toasty German malt notes with hints of pepper, fruit, and kettle caramelization.

Brown bread, walnuts, and apricot stones lead out the flavor profile. Low bitterness throughout. Unique nearly-herbal, medium-dry woody finish with hints of dark fruit.

Creamy, medium-light bodied, not astringent.

A very nice example of the style - one of the better domestic versions around.

Picked up a single at Princetons in Maple Grove, MN. Mmmm. Reminds me a bit of a doppelbock for the big fruity tang. A little roasted barley follow it up, but there's a distinct, creamy yeast character that ties the toasty malt to the dry cherry/currant fruit. The finish is dry and crisp and the body isn't too thick. You can take this as a sipper, or treat it as a regular beer. Worth checking out.
