A-Light brown with chill haze. Upon opening, spewed all over my counter, had a head like a diet coke. Enormous, tiny, loud bubbles that disappeared in a flash.

s-A little toasty, malty sweet, but a noticeable sour note.

t-Sharp, sour, overtaking the malt.

m-light mouthfeel, almost ciderish

d-forcing it down until something else gets cold.

I'm not sure if biere de garde is the correct classification for this beer. It's an ale brewed with pine needles, if my information is correct. I was expecting something like a retsina wine - very piney without much else. I was wrong. The pine is very much in the background, giving the beer a strong floral aroma. On the palate it is very well balanced with some sweet malts and a subdued yet firm hop presence.

A very interesting beer, quite unlike anything else I've tasted. Well worth a try to anybody looking for something new.

Beer bottle (33cl.), tasted in 2008.

Appearance : orange and copper coloured beer, with white foam head not persistent.
Smell : spruce and spicy aromas.
Taste and mouthfeel : piney notes, beautiful roundness
Dinkability : a good beer in the style "bière de garde"

Picked up a 750 of this at WF in Vienna for 4, figured it couldn't be that bad...

Reaction upon first taste was, no way this is a biere de garde. Apparently this is brewed with pine needles and flavor is extremely sweet with a mild hop bitterness, in the bottle I'm sampling. Appearance is unremarkable, a dark relatively clear amber with a quickly dissipating cream colored head of a few large bubbles with no lacing. Aroma is very fruity, mild tart, but more predominantly sweet. Flavor is initially, well, very piney and sweet, before a light hop bitterness in the finish and a lingering odd candy sweetness. With every sip I think ugh, this is a drain pour, yet I continue drinking. A very unique, Belgian style ale with a lingering pine flavor, distinct from the typical piney hop flavor. Not quite recommended, but not exactly avoidable either; worth a try for something unique.
