There is a big and rocky white head that fades slowly into the murky mango colored beer known as Oro de Calabaza. Splashes of lace slide down the sides. The glass offers a perfumey bouqet of light berry, spicy phenols, apricot or peach, and an occasional whiff of lemon zest.
This is a strikingly tart and acidic brew with soft swirls of peachricot quickly eclipsed by warming alcohol and acidity. Just a kiss of hop bitter and maybe vanilla with a hint of light wood. You know like licking a chopstick. The alcohol calms down as the beer warms and smooths out the brew to reveal yeasty spices and esters that combine with the other elements to create a distorted creamy pineapple character. Mouthfeel is light, creamy, and stingy all at once.
This beer is very interesting but also kinda wildin'. I am into it enough to try the others despite the high price, but doubt I'll revisit this one.

So excited to finally have Jolly Pumpkin on Texas beer shelves. Texas is quickly becoming an amazing state for beer. Starting things off with the Oro de Calabaza. Poured into my snifter. Oro is bright, but hazed, gold. Things are topped off by a finger or so off off white head. Head falls to a ring somewhat quickly.
The aroma is inviting. A hefty sour funk hits first. Tart fruits – apples, pears, sour cherries, and lemons stand out. Sweet caramel hits next. Light spice and bubblegum notes round out the nose.
Flavor is no less impressive. Plenty of funk hits first. Slightly earthy, sour lemons stand out. Tart pome fruits pop next. Sweet bubblegum notes stand out. Peppery spice rounds things out. Lemon notes linger on in the finish. The finish is tart and drying, encouraging one to take another sip.
Oro is light bodied. The carbonation makes for an effervescent and refreshing brew.
Oro de Calabaza is a great beer. You must love funk to enjoy this beer. The 8% ABV is almost non existent, making this quite a refreshing brew on a hot summers night. If Oro de Calabaza is indicative of what of Jolly Pumpkin has to offer, I can hardly what to try their other brews.
