Bottle (1/8/2013) to oversized Ommegang wine glass
A:It is light golden yellowish honey in color with a white head that leaves a thin lacing around the top of the glass. It is cloudier then in appears as it looks light but in reality it is almost completely opaque but that is to be expected given the barrel aging.
S: There is a grain like light malt smell that definitely has some of that farmhouse funk nature to it. I cannot detect any of the oak but there is some dry wine like notes in there. Also there are some hint of alcohol though it is not strong at all but mixes with the a peppery kick that doesn't smell strongly and can feel it in your nose.
T: Nice and light upfront it is a pretty refreshing taste it definitely has a dry sour taste with light slightly fruity white wine notes. It has a slight peppery kick that mixes with a few other spices I cannot place to give the beer a unique bite, which combines well with the initial sour kick. There is also a little bit of funk in there to mix everything together.
M: The mouthfeel is light and watery as it is pretty thin. There is definitely a bready feel as its like biting into a roll but with more of a sour kick. You can definitely feel the pepper in there as it ads to the kick, but there is also a juicy feel like watered down white wine.
O: This is a nice light easy drinking sour that is especially good in terms of drinkability given 8%abv. There is a good sour funk, though a light one, that mixes well with a pepper kick to have a solid overall taste and feel. It looks good and only the scent there isn't much to say about. I enjoyed this as I have all the Jolly Pumpkin sours I've tried and is definitely worth a try.

So excited to finally have Jolly Pumpkin on Texas beer shelves. Texas is quickly becoming an amazing state for beer. Starting things off with the Oro de Calabaza. Poured into my snifter. Oro is bright, but hazed, gold. Things are topped off by a finger or so off off white head. Head falls to a ring somewhat quickly.
The aroma is inviting. A hefty sour funk hits first. Tart fruits – apples, pears, sour cherries, and lemons stand out. Sweet caramel hits next. Light spice and bubblegum notes round out the nose.
Flavor is no less impressive. Plenty of funk hits first. Slightly earthy, sour lemons stand out. Tart pome fruits pop next. Sweet bubblegum notes stand out. Peppery spice rounds things out. Lemon notes linger on in the finish. The finish is tart and drying, encouraging one to take another sip.
Oro is light bodied. The carbonation makes for an effervescent and refreshing brew.
Oro de Calabaza is a great beer. You must love funk to enjoy this beer. The 8% ABV is almost non existent, making this quite a refreshing brew on a hot summers night. If Oro de Calabaza is indicative of what of Jolly Pumpkin has to offer, I can hardly what to try their other brews.
