750ml into a DFH signature glass. A few months old since purchase, but I have no idea when it was bottled.
A - Cloudy light orange/yellow body. Nice white head/lacing that sticks around.
S - Some light citrus, spice and Belgian yeast. There is some funk to it. Like a really fresh, tame gueze.
T - Lemon, grass, yeast, and a slight sour finish. The oak aging is noticeable towards the end, as are the spices. Refreshing and fairly light. This is like a toned down saison.
O - I liked this beer a lot. One of the more successful American attempts at a somewhat Belgian style. It was priced pretty well, and with the higher ABV I'm sure it will age quite gracefully.

So excited to finally have Jolly Pumpkin on Texas beer shelves. Texas is quickly becoming an amazing state for beer. Starting things off with the Oro de Calabaza. Poured into my snifter. Oro is bright, but hazed, gold. Things are topped off by a finger or so off off white head. Head falls to a ring somewhat quickly.
The aroma is inviting. A hefty sour funk hits first. Tart fruits – apples, pears, sour cherries, and lemons stand out. Sweet caramel hits next. Light spice and bubblegum notes round out the nose.
Flavor is no less impressive. Plenty of funk hits first. Slightly earthy, sour lemons stand out. Tart pome fruits pop next. Sweet bubblegum notes stand out. Peppery spice rounds things out. Lemon notes linger on in the finish. The finish is tart and drying, encouraging one to take another sip.
Oro is light bodied. The carbonation makes for an effervescent and refreshing brew.
Oro de Calabaza is a great beer. You must love funk to enjoy this beer. The 8% ABV is almost non existent, making this quite a refreshing brew on a hot summers night. If Oro de Calabaza is indicative of what of Jolly Pumpkin has to offer, I can hardly what to try their other brews.
