750ml bottle poured into a Jolly Pumpkin balloon tulip.
Batch 585, bottled 7-27-10
A - Pours a really light straw color, with a cloudy and hazy body. There's about 1.5-fingers of white head, consisting of medium-sized bubbles that actively fizz. Despite that, it still has decent retention, and the lacing is great as well.
S - This being my first Jolly Pumpkin beer, I wasn't sure what to expect out of this as I've heard they allow open fermentation. After taking my first smell, it's obvious that some little critters are running around in here. It has a tart, funky smell to it, like a slight skunkiness mixed with chlorine. Throw in some rotting vegetables as well. It's strangely addicting but at the same time a little off-putting. I'm getting some fruits in here as well, most noticeably a lot of green apple and slight lemon zest.
T - The flavors are much more appetizing than the nose. Gone are the vegetables and skunk, replaced with a nice sourness and earthy funk. Getting some hay and grass here, but it's crisp and refreshing rather than the damp must that some bacteria creates. The fruits are back as well, again, with the apple leading the way, following by oranges, lemon, and slight peach. The finish is somewhat short and has some funk, vinegar, and apple to it.
M - Mouthfeel is moderately light-bodied with high carbonation. The nice pop in carbonation gives it a pleasant crispness that complements the semi-dry finish and cleanses the palate. Not sour enough to do any puckering, but its somewhat tart.
D/O - Drinkability is moderately high. The nose on this had me reeling a little bit, but sticking with it led to a rewarding flavor. It's really easy to drink, especially given the 8.00% ABV. A nice drinking beer that I wish would be distributed closer to me!

Appearance: Golden yellow, with a touch of haze and very little head.
Aroma: Grainy aroma with a bit of lemon and spice.
Taste & Mouthfeel: Slightly sour lemon flavor initially, with a bit of peppery heat following. Finishes with cereal grains and uncooked pasta flavors, and has a bit of buttery character as well. Some yeasty funk throughout.
Final Word: An interesting drink, but not one that I must have again. My favorite part of the brew was the peppery character, which kept the profile lively and interesting, as the other characteristics, like the tart lemon and yeast, didn’t present anything out of the ordinary. Certainly good, and always worth trying, but I would seek out other Jolly Pumpkin brews first if you are having trouble choosing.
