750ml bottle poured into tulip 26/10/12
A bright yellow liquid glows, lots of tiny particles and a few slow tiny bubbles, just a thin cap of bone white foam but it retains well and leaves lots of random lace where it existed
S its funky alright but not over the top, some lemon, a little damp hay and wet wood, some apple cider and faint spice, the barrels not over the top an the funk meshes with other aspects of the nose, no booze anywhere very well done
T more barrel then the smell and some very faint booze that was invisible on the nose, still funky but again its not over the top, some faint chewing gum from the yeast, and a dry sour note that's not quite vinegar
M well carbonated and light considering the strength, very faint heat but at 8% they've done a great job, apple and funky yeast linger on the finish, a little sour but far from turning my mouth inside-out, a little tannin and overall I wouldn't change a whole lot in this department
O solid stuff, I didn't know what to expect but was quite impressed. Smells terrific and feels great, I could've have another
A nice barrel aged sour that's not too sour or heavy on the barrel, I'd struggle to place this into a style so for now I'll just state its worth looking for

So excited to finally have Jolly Pumpkin on Texas beer shelves. Texas is quickly becoming an amazing state for beer. Starting things off with the Oro de Calabaza. Poured into my snifter. Oro is bright, but hazed, gold. Things are topped off by a finger or so off off white head. Head falls to a ring somewhat quickly.
The aroma is inviting. A hefty sour funk hits first. Tart fruits – apples, pears, sour cherries, and lemons stand out. Sweet caramel hits next. Light spice and bubblegum notes round out the nose.
Flavor is no less impressive. Plenty of funk hits first. Slightly earthy, sour lemons stand out. Tart pome fruits pop next. Sweet bubblegum notes stand out. Peppery spice rounds things out. Lemon notes linger on in the finish. The finish is tart and drying, encouraging one to take another sip.
Oro is light bodied. The carbonation makes for an effervescent and refreshing brew.
Oro de Calabaza is a great beer. You must love funk to enjoy this beer. The 8% ABV is almost non existent, making this quite a refreshing brew on a hot summers night. If Oro de Calabaza is indicative of what of Jolly Pumpkin has to offer, I can hardly what to try their other brews.
