Bottling 3 2007

I haven't had too much from Jolly Pumpkin, but their label artwork has always been enticing. I decided to give in this time.

This beer poured out essentially perfect. Light, clear amber body with a large fluffy slightly yellow, white head. The head is remarkably uniform and leaves a very nice lacing. I usually am not sure who to rate appearance, but this is one of the most appealing beers to look at.

The smell is quite funky. Overripe fruits, slightly cheesy, barnyard, balanced with citrus and a slight vinegar sourness. Sweetness from the malt is in the background. Probably because of the age, I don't get much from chestnuts or spices. The smell is very aromatic, pungent but inviting.

I have to say, initially the taste was a let down. It felt like there wasn't nearly as much going on as in the smell. But, after working my way through it, it still holds its own. The taste is more sour than funky, but not overly sour. It seems toned down by a dry oak flavor, but the sourness is still the dominant flavor.

The mouthfeel was a bit watery initially. I'm getting used to it, and it's no longer bothering me as much. Carbonation is pretty considering how much head was produced. I would have liked more body. The finish is nice though, leaving some dry, sour, funky, and woody flavors.

It's pretty sour and funky, but the lighter body makes it pretty drinkable. As the flavors kind of pile up, it becomes more of a sipper, but also more fulfilling.

Even though I was displeased with the mouthfeel and taste at first, as it warms (or as I grow accustomed to the beer), it becomes pretty enjoyable. I'm not particularly into sour beers, but this one is pretty balanced.

This beer was really interesting. In the light on the bar this beer had a golden almost orange color to it. It had a fruity cherry/plum aroma mixed with the smell of corona (not from the bar, the smell was coming from the Jolly Pumpkin Beer). The mouth feel of the beer was interesting it started with some body to it that fades away on the tip of your tongue to a dry almost acidic like finish. The beer starts with that almost brett spicy funky flavor and then transitions to a light tart cherry flavor on the finish. Over all I enjoyed this beer it's not something that I want to session but it is a beer I would like to drink every now and then.

750 ml bottle poured into a JP snifter.

A: Slight orange with a fine creamy white heat that slowly dissipated to a thin smooth creamy film with great lacing.

S: Slight tart thing going on but very light, mostly light brett funk. There are some weird spice notes as well but I'm having a hard time describing that that is... interesting. Bottle says chestnuts and spices but hard to know otherwise.

T: Very nice. Light light tartness with a gentle brett character but not much. Spices and maybe the chestnuts, and obviously the spicy yeast, give this beer a lot of character. Flavors are gentle yet satisfying and makes for an extremely refreshing and drinkable brew.

M: Medium carbonation makes this beer very easy drinking and a little watery since its missing that bubblyness. Spices linger in the aftertaste with a slight bitterness to it but mostly yeast and spice.

O: An amazing and refreshing brew by JP. I love the fact that these are refreshing and interesting beers that you can drink all day everyday. If only my wallet would allow that. Regardless, a must try by JP and definitely getting hard to pick a favorite.

Notes: Blend 1 - Bottled 10/03/12

Appearance:
Pours a deep, hazy copper color with a prominent beige head that settles quickly though. No lacing. Light streams of carbonation can be found.

Aroma:
Beautifully spiced and quite sweet. Nutmeg and cinnamon and perhaps a hint of clove scattered amongst a blanket of brown sugar. Zesty citrus notes sneak in here and there. Absolutely love the nose on this one.

Taste:
Funky, tart hits right upfront and hangs around for the duration of each sip. It's definitely a slow sipper, but you're rewarded with the perfect level of sweetness and oak character - had to ask myself if I was drinking wine a few times. Prominent nuttiness and a bit granny smith apples. Plenty of spice carries over from the nose as well, just more muted than I was expecting.

Mouthfeel:
If you're not ready for it, your best pucker face might come out of hiding - personally, I love it. Lip-smacking tartness. Medium body with decent carbonation and a semi-sweet finish.

Overall:
I remember a time, not all that long ago, this style would have rubbed me the wrong way. I'm glad it has grown on me, because this is a fantastic brew I would have missed out on otherwise! Plenty of sourness here to please fans of Warhead and Sweettart candies, but complex enough to earn a nod from the most stubborn beer snob. Well worth your time and money.
