A bottle conditioned ale so it poured a bit thick. The head stuck around for a while with this hazy beer. It had a lemony hay flavour with a slight bitterness. Out of all the beers we tried during this particular tatsing it had the lowest ABV at 4.5% but presented higher in the mouth. A great sipping beer.

Batch 1245 bottled 11/02/2012. Quite aged.

Pours slightly cloudy light orange/yellow. Large frothy white head that recedes slowly. Decent amount of lacing. Significant carbonation.

Tart apples, overripe fruit in the aroma. Musty and earthy brett character. Lemons and grassy hay. Some crackery malt present. Pineapple as well. Age has treated the beer nicely. Brett has really taken on a nice complex character.

Tart lemons at first given way to earthy funk. Malt is still present but backgrounded taking on a soft cracker character. Very dry, somewhat oaky. Tart but still approachable.

Highly carbonated with some tannins. Very dry which adds to the perception of tartness.

This is a beer that has aged quite well. I found this beer to be a bit simple (though still quite good) fresh. Much more complex with age, but still quaffable.

Date: 8/23/14
Other notes: Bottled 1/28/13 (over 1.5 years ago...didn't know was this old when I purchased a couple days ago).

Appearance - 3.8/5
A very clear golden orange. Fairly strong head retention. Large carbonation bubbles can be seen flowing up the beer. Looks refreshing and inviting. I think I would have liked the appearance if the beer was a little more hazy though. It seems too clear.

Smell - 3.75/5
Classic Jolly Pumpkin tart smell. Smells of tart apples and lemons. Perhaps a bit of the saison spiciness

Taste - 4/5
Classic JP tart taste. Tart and fruity taste. Apples, lemons, other fruit tastes. Perhaps a slight taste of the saison spicy/yeastiness, though it is extremely subtle. I don't mind that, since Saison is not my favorite style anyway, but it seems like it could have improved the beer a little beer, if the spiciness was a little more apparent.

Mouthfeel - 4/5
Crisp, medium body. Has a very nice level of carbonation which really fits well with the rest of the beer.

Overall - 4/5
When it comes to Jolly Pumpkin beers, I may be a bit biased, since I love their taste. But this beer was pretty good. Had the JP tartness that I have come to love and expect. Considering this is a Saison, I thought it could have used to be a bit spicier. There is not that much that makes this beer stand out from other JP brews, but it is still great overall.
