Enjoyed on tap at Jolly Pumpkin in Ann Arbor for the '13 Biere de Mars Grand Reserve release. It pours a cloudy mix of deep copper that cascades from a dense and red-tinted brown at the bottom to a lighter, nearly amber color at the top. The thin, grey-hinted head is small, most likely due to the pour, but it still leaves some nice, wet, dripping lace in its path. Very interesting gradient of color, especially when held up in front of a light.

One whiff and mmm.... You can immediately smell the tartness of the beer. A good amount of acidity jumps out at the nostrils, attached with plenty of hearty vinegar notes all around. The vinous aromas with this one are strong, too; tons of grapes, oak, and tannin. Successive whiffs draw out more fruit aside from grapes; cherries and apple skins are relevant as well. There's a mild, horsey and barnyard aroma that prances in eventually, revealing a mild funk amongst the tart brigade. I would've like the aroma to "pop" just a little more than it did, but it still did a fine job of getting my taste buds excited to finally bring it to my lips.

The first sip stings the taste buds and gets the saliva glands working - quite sour, with a heavy initial tartness; it has got me puckering and smacking my lips right away. Vinous notes are even heavier on the palate with plenty of oak and barrel flavors, tannin, grapes, and a mild hint of alcohol. Vinegar is almost equal in strength as it comes charging in right away, contributing to the brash tartness of the brew. Acidic to the core while remaining devastatingly drinkable.

Just like with the aroma, allowing this beer to open up reveals some more complexity and more fruits; cherries, sour lemon juice, tart green apples. The problem is, I finished this one pretty quickly - very easy to put down. The tail end reveals some moderate funk; wet hay, soaked wood, and a slight musty barnyard, but it's safe to say that this beer is more heavily pronounced on the sour side rather than the funky side. Thin-medium bodied, lively with carbonation, giving an almost crispy mouth feel. The finish is bone dry, ending with a sharp tartness, lightly vinous oik, and very tame funk.

Phenomenal brew from Jolly Pumpkin. Excellent sour. I was sad to look down at my glass and find that it was empty so quickly. I couldn't keep this stuff away from my mouth. It's exceedingly sour and tart, but still to a highly drinkable degree - you won't have to worry about it burning a hole into your stomach. Light funk is a welcomed accompaniment to the complex tart and fruity flavor profile. The vinous and vinegar notes were lovely. I wish this was released more often, but I heard it spends 24 months in barrels... I guess you can't really argue with that.

Oak Aged - 14 Months. No date on the bottle but I will guess it's from 2006 based on other reviews here.

Pours into my glass a deep, vibrant garnet with a hint of purple and a half inch of bubbly off white foam that sticks to the side of the glass. Aromas kick off with a nice mix of dark dried fruits alongside a ribbon of caramel and light toasted grain. A clean, slightly acidic funky, farmhouse aroma is there with a woody, oak backbone. Leather, lemon zest and a kiss of vanilla.

First sip brings smooth crisp malts laced with a myriad of fruit flavors, grape, strawberry, lemon zest and more. Dry woody oak digs in along with a nice funky tartness as well. Leather, caramel and an afterthought of vanilla on the way down. Finishes with lingering fruit, funk and wood. Extremely tasty and well balanced overall. A joy to drink.

Mouthfeel is smooth, arid and easy to drink with steady carbonation. This is an incredibly drinkable elixir and I wouldn't mind a 750ml bottle of this right now. Really glad to have had the chance to sample this one. Keep it up JP!!

Batch 346/348. The beer pours light brown with a white head. The aroma is tart with some lemons, yeast and oak. The flavor is brown sugar, lemon, brett funk and oak. The tartness lingers and makes the beer very drinkable. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Big thanks to Ed(OHLRangers) for this bottle at DLD last year. Been wanting to try this for quite some time. 16 month.

12oz. brown bottle poured into a GLBC snifter.

A: Pours much darker than expected... pours a deep cranberry color with good clarity. Pretty decent sized tinted head with good retention, laying to a fat skim. Pretty decent lacing.

S: Sour, tart, and even a good funkiness in the aroma. There's some kind of spicy or floral aroma that I can't quite put my finger on. It reminds me of fall or Christmas but I don't know why.

T/M: Some sourness but more tartness from cherries and red grapes. Only a little bit of funkiness with some wet hay and mustiness. Some lighter tart fruits in there as well. More of the spice or floral quality that I can't quite place... tasty, though. Light, wheaty malts. Body is medium light with decent carbonation.

D: Tasty brew but I'd really like to see more sourness and funk. Very easy to drink.

Split with Fbm115 the other night

A: It's a muddy looking brown, dark yet still transparent. minimal head that is slightly off white.

S: Vinegar brett and wood. There is also a nice bit of caramel sweetness, some cinnamon spice and sour green apple notes.

T: Very complex. Caramel and wood with breadcrust notes, unripe apple green apple and then some dragonfruit. Nice amount of funkiness that is subtle and has some nice sweetness to balance it out. Also bits of cinnamon.

M: Slightly acidic and a bit rubbery, no booze and a little bit of dryness

D: A very nice sipper that is very enjoyable

330ml bottle thanks to sarro on BA.

Pours dark brown with reddish hues and a one-finger light tan head that fades to a ring.

Jolly Pumpkin's house yeast is evident on the aroma. Pretty funky and oaky with caramel malt.

Flavor is slightly sweet caramel malt but mostly tart and full of the house yeast flavor. Funky and oaky with some slight fruity notes and very slight bourbon.

Nice palate, dry and fairly tart with medium body.

Pretty good beer. Not amazing, but good.

At the release today they were offering the 2-19-2010 batch in bottles and hand-pulled from a cask. Surprisingly a quiet release, only a handful of us were there when they opened. After purchasing my 6 bottle limit I headed downstairs to have a glass on cask and some lunch. Poured into a snifter.

I'm pretty new to hand pulled beers but I was surprised to see this one come out of the cask looking like a glass full of head. Slowly however the murky brown beer crept up the glass until only a medium sized light brown head was left. Looked delicious, even at 11 am after my morning coffee. The smell is dominated by sourness and tart fruit, cherries maybe. The is a red wine vinegar quality and some oak. The aroma indicates this one isn't going to be messing around. Wonderful tasting beer, and I don't even like belgiany sour beers that much. Hugely sour with a tart fruitiness, oak and leather (while I've never actually chewed on leather this is what came to mind). Some pleasant funkiness too. Great sipper. While I can't compare the cask version to the regular the cask had a wonderfully fluffy lightly carbonated mouthfeel, served at a perfect temperature. I imagine this is the right way to enjoy this one. I only had the one because it was a Monday morning, but had it been a Saturday I could have sat at the bar drinking these all day. Great beer and a great quiet subdued release. Really a good morning.

Originally reviewed November 23, 2006. 12 Oz Bottle. Apple candy aroma, with a touch of apricots mellowed in ale, yet with some peculiar edges of old woman perfume. Some of the alcohol notes are deep and dark, with edges of caramel. Pour of a rich deep caramel, firey in glowing orange, witha thin rim of whitish. Flavor is a somewhat confused melange of bright awakening acidity in apple skin and white grape juice, with caramel syrup dangling with a fast flow of balsamic vinegar, between fading into a mellow fragrant lemon hop smack, yet remaining lightly subdues. Some of the nose-stinging acidity creates some balance. However, the flavor of this beer alights some muddines and subtleness with a little less distinctive qualities, it’s still a deliciously complete package.

Dark rusty orange with a dense and persistent beige head. Great retention.

Smells like sour green apples. A little funky with oak. Brown sugar.

A solid balance of sweet and sour. Slightly acidic. Green apples and sour cherries. Apple cider. Brown sugar.

Mouthfeel is medium body, moderate carbonation. Slightly puckering.

I love the sweet/sour play, like a sour patch kid. Both came strong without being overwhelming.

Poured from 12oz bottle. Eric you are the man for this gift! Many thanks go out to gratefulbeerhead!!!

A- Pours a cloudy brown color. Half finger light white head dies down faster than anything I have seen before. No lacing but a light ring around the beer.

S- Tart cherry like notes covered in a barnyard funk from the brett comes out first. Makes my mouth water. Light oaky notes in this as well. Some light citrus notes in this as well with a light vinegar nose throughout. Jolly Pumpkin always amazes me with their beer's aroma.

T- I drank this beer at room temp. and think most everyone should. The flavors are not as jump out as in the nose but still crisp nonetheless. Light cherry sourness with vinegar upfront. Oaky notes in the middle with some light citrus. The brett is there the entire beer but a little more I think in the backend. The sourness kicks it up a notch in the ending.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the style. Sourness and light funk left on the palate with more cherry sourness on the aftertaste. All the flavors were crisp and blended together well. Light alcohol drying on the palate with each sip.

D- This was a very easy and smooth drinker. Sours have this way with me though. I hope to be able to get my hands on this again. And if you want a good sour please do yourself a favor and drink this!

First off, a huge thanks to DrDoitchbig and ThomasHardy for this beer (I received one from each and since I can only review it once, props to both!). I have been saving this beer for my 300th review for a long time. Cheers!

Batch 346/348

Appearance - Pours into my Russian River Tulip with a surprisingly dark chocolate color. Held up to the fading sunlight, hints of ruby red light shine through the glass. With a vigorous pour, less than half a finger of head is achieved that surprisingly stays around for a while, leaving slight lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell - Ahh, the signature JP aroma. Funk, heavy tart green apples, sour cherries, slight vinegar, and a nice amount of oak from the barrel aging.

Taste - As my mouth puckers in anticipation, the most prominent flavor is tart, sour (no doubt) Michigan cherries. My God this just transported me back to Michigan when I was there this summer (and so many prior) on vacation. After the initial wave there is the classic barnyard funk, oak, vanilla (a new taste for me in a JP beer to be honest), and just a hint of leather. This is the most complex JP beer I have had yet. The fact that the barnyard funk is almost downplayed and replaced by the sourness/tartness of cherry fruit is also a new experience. I have read where people state there is a heavier vinegar flavor, however, I am not picking it up for the most part - there is a slight undertone, however, it is by no means distracting or the dominant flavor. There is a hint of sweetness, but again, it takes the form of fruit and is not overpowering in the sense that the tartness from the fruit offsets it to create a happy medium. Delectable.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, lower carbonation (though there is - I was worried because it took quite a hard pour to obtain even a little head). Finishes quite dry.

Drinkability - Nonexistent alcohol, clean, crisp, and refreshing. I have another one of these in my cellar and can't wait to try it with a year on it. This is my favorite JP experience yet due to the complexities of this beer I have not found in other JP offerings (yet I still consider them relatively complex so that is saying something). A perfect beer for my 300th review. Cheers all!

A 12 oz bottle courtesy of kryptic. No distinguishing batch information, although it was aged in oak for 16 months.

A: The BdG is a dark ruddy color that verges on brown at times. Only the narrow base of the glass routinely shows off the red highlights. A small head doesn't get very big, nor does it last long.

S: Surprising for JP, the ale offers more barrel than funk, thanks to those 16 months. Sweet, woody oak barely stands out over the critters. That funk is gamey, more wild than tart.

T: Plenty of malt upfront, reminding that this is a BdG. Fast on its tail, the oak shines through with vanilla. The funk isn't as strong as some reviewers note. Instead the barrel has really mellowed the ale out. What little funkiness is there is acetic, a small dose of vinegar and apples. The oak with just a thin undercurrent of funk is interesting and delicious. The funk intensifies a bit as time passes but the vinegary flavors never overtake the oak.

M: The tartness increases over time, gradually moving into the limelight. I really like the oak, the subtle twang of wood and vanilla.

D: The exchange of oak and funk is interesting, especially for a JP beer. The crescendo of the funk, it's really coming close to edging out the barrel, is amazing.

2011: Gravity pour at GTMW... super sour stonefruit, sharp acidity, one dimensional almost. Not as good as the 16 month aged batch reviewed in '09. Maybe bottle conditioning time would improve.

2009 edition, aged 16 months:
Big whiff of quality bourbon in the nose, never got the bourbon barrel from one of these before. Brown sugar, oak, complex wild nose. Tart with plenty of leathery Brett. Soft, restrained, lots of wood. Subtly different from last year, less fruit, more oaky with the slight bourbon inflection. Thanks makdeco & tyee!

2008 release, aged 27 months in oak. Served at cellar temperature, around 55º.

Color is a light reddish-orange brown. Small head at first, that settles to a constant ring at the edge. With a little swirl, some spotty lace clings to the edge.

Huge cidery aroma of apple cider vinegar, wet wood, with a restrained wild funk underneath.

Tart cherry skins, oak, succulent berries, underripe tart strawberry, and lime zest. Long aftertaste, plenty of fruit and woody traces that linger. Muted oak tannin, never overpowers or becomes too dry. Once the initial tartness passes, it has a sublime smoothness. Carbonation is pretty light.

This stuff is too damn delicious, i'm glad I got the chance to taste it. It ranks up there with Oerbier Reserva and Supplication to me, and stands apart with it's own distinctive character. All the best qualities of Flanders sour ales are here, with the unique JP twist.
