750 ml bottle. Blend 9. Bottled 8-16-2012. Served in a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a light golden yellow color with less than a finger of a white head that dissipates to a thin collar. Body is slightly hazy with moderate amounts of visible carbonation.

Smell: Surprisingly strong barnyard funk, green apple, clove, wheat. Almost smells like a gueuze.

Taste: Wheat, green apple, hints of banana, and a mild clove spiciness in the finish. Some bretty funk, even a slight cheesiness, is present as well, though not as strong as in the aroma. Sourness is relatively low.

Mouthfeel: Light and crisp. Medium/high levels of lively carbonation. Finishes dry. Really refreshing

Overall: Really interesting beer. Surprisingly funky and gueuze-like, but overall more mild. Not mind blowing, but a nice refreshing highly drinkable option.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/6/2013. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy golden straw color with a 2-3 finger foamy and fluffy white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense foamy lacing clings around the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of lemon zest, pear, apple, banana, clove, pepper, herbal, floral, grass, straw, wheat, cracker, bread, light funk, and yeast/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and moderate malt notes; with great strength. Taste of lemon zest, banana, pear, apple, clove, pepper, wheat, cracker, bread, straw, grass, herbal, floral, light funk, and yeast/grassy earthiness. Good amount of crisp earthy yeast spiciness and slight tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon zest, banana, pear, apple, clove, pepper, straw, grass, herbal, floral, wheat, cracker, light funk, and yeast/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and moderate malt flavors; with a very nice and crisp malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. High carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and moderately prickly/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 4.5%. Overall this is an excellent saison. All around great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and moderate malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

blend 9, august 2012. this is an older bottle, and it behaves like one. a total gusher as i open it, beer rushes out everywhere, pale and sticky on my table. once i can pour it, a hazy pale white yellow liquid reveals itself, full of yeast floaters and chunks of brown yeast at the surface. the head lasts just seconds and then goes basically flat, my main critique of this beer. the nose is awesome though, pale wheat malt and funky farmy yeast with some bacterial pucker tickling the nostrils. lemons and mowed hay are also present, a very late summer vibe here. the taste is funky too, with a very light wheat base letting the yeast take center stage. citrus flavors and lactic acidity are here, but this is only a little sour. its doughy and outdoorsy and is as full of vibes and feelings as it is of flavors. it just feels watery without any bubbles, and drinks oddly as a result. although when i hold it in my mouth i can feel and here them. the yeast particulate is also unflattering texturally, but the beer is downright delicious overall. with a better mouthfeel this would be spot on. perfect still with fish tacos!

Enjoyed out of a brown 750 mL bottle that had a yellow bottling date stamped on the side, but it is rubbed off to the point of being mostly illegible. What I can tell is that it was bottled in September or earlier in 2013. Given the style, that shouldn't be a problem. Poured into a Boulevard Smokestack Series tulip glass.

Appearance - Holy gusher Batman! I'm glad I was watching the inside of the bottle when I pried off the cap, because I could see it start to build a thick sudsy head inside the bottle immediately. I quickly grab my glass and begin pouring to avoid any beer casualties. I'm barely able to get the liquid halfway to the 50 cL marker line on the side of the glass before the rest of the space is filled with huge stark white head. From the bottom of the glass, a furiously active stream of carbonation bubbles rises to continue replenishing the over-the-top head. Inside the bottle, a full-on three-finger head has formed, and a little snowdrift of foam has creeped out of the bottle top. Eventually, the foam in the glass recedes enough to allow me to finish my pour, but the huge mountains of suds are still present, and there is heavy spotted lacing on the sides of the glass. The body is straw yellow and mostly translucent, with just hints of cloud and haze floating through. On subsequent pours out of the bottle, that haze increased due to the rich layer of sediment on the bottom of the bottle.

Smell - Unfortunately, the rest of the beer was downhill from the wild appearance. Notes of light malt, wheat dinner rolls, some faint lemon juice and citrus zest, and hard-to-detect notes of oak and wood from the barrel aging. I'm not getting any of the banana or clove that the brewer's description of the beer suggests. But in a way, it smells something like what you'd expect an American pale wheat beer and a saison to smell like. Unfortunately, I just don't think it works that well.

Taste - The inverse bell curve continues, with the taste being a step down from the smell. At least the smell had some interesting brightness and herbal characteristics and citric notes. The taste is largely bland and uninteresting. Pale wheat malts are present, and again, I can sense the oak characteristics, reminding me of chardonnay a little bit. There is also faint lemon zest and a tartness that seems like it has been watered down.

Mouthfeel - Light bodied and high carbonation, with a pleasantly effervescent feel. Dry finish.

Overall, the appearance and feel of this beer are nice, but the smell and taste are just too uninteresting for me to consider having this beer again. There are so many better saisons out there--even from Jolly Pumpkin--that I can't imagine any reason to drink this one other than the low ABV, and there's Bam Biere for that purpose. I know individual tastes are different, but I'm really not understanding why this beer is rated so high. Perhaps my bottle was less than ideal.
