BOTTLE: 750ml brown glass. Orange pry-off pressure cap. Appealing label art.

Served cold into a pilsner glass at low altitude in Austin, Texas. Reviewed live as a pumpkin ale per the label. 5.9% ABV.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 1.5 fingers wide. White colour. Nice thickness and frothiness. No lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Retention is average - about 2 minutes.

BODY: Clear gold/honey colour of above average vibrance. Clean; no yeast paticulate or hop sediment is visible.

Overall, it's an appealing appearance for a pumpkin ale.Appears well-carbonated.

AROMA: Cocoa, Munich malts, cinnamon, nutmeg, floral hop character, and guiding oak overtones. The pumpkin is quite reticent, to its detriment. If anything, a pumpkin ale aroma should have evocative pumpkin character. Apple cider character.

Aromatic intensity is above average.

No yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes are detectable.

TASTE: Has a nice guiding oak undertone which lends it nice cohesion. Malt backbone is comprised of Munich malts, clean barley, Cocoa powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice. Where's the pumpkin? It's barely present at all. Apple cider notes fill it out nicely. The cocoa could be more evocative. Crystal malts. Some salt. Mild sourness (i.e. 2/10 in terms of intensity).

This is well-balanced, and has goo depth of flavour. It's adequately complex, but there's plenty of room for more intricacy and subtlety.

Average duration and intensity of flavour.

TEXTURE: Smooth, acidic, wet, refreshing, medium-bodied, and aptly thick. Crisp and clean. This texture complements the taste well, but doesn't elevate the beer or accentuate any of its constituent notes. Well-carbonated.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

OVERALL: Highly drinkable. The cocoa powder character develops as it warms, making it a pleasant brew, though the sore absence of any pumpkin character whatsoever does hold it back. It's not the stellar quality I usually associate with Jolly Pumpkin, but it's worth trying and I'm glad I picked it up. Just don't expect much of a pumpkin ale. The oak character is a stand-out.

This is an old one. Bottled in 2013. Didn’t quite foam over when I opened the bottle, but about 1 inch of foam stuck straight up above the bottle rim. Poured with a big white thick head. Sour spice aroma. Is this beer supposed to be sour? Tart mildly spiced taste. Not getting much pumpkin. I think it tastes pretty good. Nice bubbly dry mouthfeel. I really like it. Hope it’s supposed to taste this way.

Not my normal style, served in a 8 oz snifter at White Oak Tavern. Cloudy orange, citrus like nose. Sour but not overly but blends with the pumpkin very well. smooth but nicely carbonated.

Appearance - 4/5
Wasn't a gusher, but when I poured, the foam built up like crazy. I had to slowly pour a little bit, wait for the foam to die down, pour more, etc, etc. Definitely annoying. Anyway, the beer pours a beautiful pumpkin orange. Slightly hazy. A medium amount of carbonation can be seen.

Smell - 3.75/5
Jolly Pumpkin tartness: sour apples, lemons, cherries. Some spices. Can't really smell any pumpkin, or any distinctly fall spices, which is disappointing. The smell is nice, but it just smells like most JP beers.

Taste - 3/5
Definitely has a taste distinct from other JP beers though. Upon the first sip, my mouth immediately encountered a mellowed-out nutmeg smell, along with perhaps some other fall spices like cinnamon and allspice. I say "mellowed-out" because the spiciness is not nearly as strong as a lot of fall beers, but that's okay. The tartness is still there, but it's greatly toned-down compared with other JP beers. I get a little bit of the tart apples and lemons, and maybe a bit of pumpkin taste. Overall, the taste seems kinda bland-watery to me. I like the fall spices, but I feel like they didn't need to tone down the tartness as much. And they could have added more spices.

Mouthfeel - 3.25/5
Light to medium in body. Moderate level of carbonation. Crisp. The beer is kinda watery.

Overall - 3.5/5
I must say I was disappointed with this beer. I liked the fall spices which they incorporated into the beer, but overall the beer seemed way less flavorful than their other beers, and the tartness was way toned-down. And I would have little some pumpkin taste as well.

Sampled on tap at the Black Star coop JP tap takeover. Pours a nice bright tangerine color with just a ski of fine white head. Only clear at the edges. Nose is surprisingly underwhelming with just a hint of orange. Flavor - autumn in a glass. Apple, squash, orange and wood. This sour would serve as a good introduction to the style for newbie sour heads. Finish is very clean.
