Presentation: 750ml brown pop top with gorgeous label. HUGE thanks to jbck109 for crossing this major want off my list. Bottled on 1-26-11, my wife's birthday; if she liked wild brews, I'd be splitting this with her. Alas, this is all mine. Ok, popping the top here, I found the STRANGEST thing I've ever found in one of my beers. For about an inch and a half all around the top of the bottle from the lip (and inside of the cap) is a dark, muddy pink/brown paste. It almost looks like melted wax of the lesser-quality variety (i.e. what's used on New Glarus' fruit beers. Weirdest freaking thing I've ever seen. If this were just 'any' beer, I'd probably dump it out, but now that I have this, I'm all systems go...

Appearance: Hazy, ruddy orange/brown beer with pink highlights. Nice, creamy ivory cap with pink hints. Amazing sheets of lace. Really quite attractive overall.

Smell: It's JP, so of course there's tons of Bretty goodness front and center. Vibrantly fruity, earthy, and funky. Just a hint of strawberry as well. I'm not getting a anything specifically rose-like here, but it is a bit flowery.

Taste: Wild, and slightly tart, but not over-the-top; this is nicely nuanced and balanced. Although I'm having trouble pulling out any individual fruit flavors here (I get a bit of raspberry after awhile), but this is absolutely bursting with fruity and floral flavors of the Brett variety. Nothing that specifically shouts 'rose', but this is really pleasant. Just a hint of crisp, dry pale/pils malt on the finish. Tart, but delicately so, like raspberries and slightly underripe fruit. Lightly bitter on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Light side of medium-bodied.

Overall: When I started in on this, I was thinking I was gonna be a bit disappointed in that this was going to be 'just another' wild beer. And, while it's true that I don't get anything specific here that shouts 'rose', 'rose hips', or 'hibiscus', it really is a beautifully fruity, floral, brettanomyces-kissed brew that (unlike many American Wild Ales, and some from JP for that matter) strikes a perfect balance between yeasty notes, fruity esters, funk, tartness, hop bitterness, and malt. Really, this is one of the best saisons I've had, wild or not.

Poured from a capped 750 mL bottle into a Duvel tulip. Moderately gentle hand. Batch 304,306. Bottled on 02/12/14.

A: Cloudy orange with a pink tint. 3 fingers of rocky off-white head. Good retention. Gushed a bit with opening. Nice lacing.

S: Lightly musty, lightly tart Belgian yeast. Hints of rose petals and other florals. Lemon. Interesting strawberry notes.

T: Tart and lightly fruity up front with development of a faint pale maltiness and mild hop bitterness. Berry sweetness flashes before a fairly dry finish. A floral, slightly sour bitterness lingers in the aftertaste. Alcohol is minimal.

M: Moderate to high carbonation, but not overly prickly. Actually rather smooth feeling. Light to moderate body. Good vehicle for the flavors noted above.

O: Another solid offering from Jolly Pumpkin. Enough embellishment to create some interesting depth, but even-handed enough not to overwhelm the underlying base beer. The berry notes, in particular, are quite nice.

Prost!
