Blend 7/8. Bottled 2/4/2011. Tasting at about 1yr of age.
Pours a muddy, dark orange-amber with a huge head that reduces very slowly, first showing lots of big bubbles around the edges then reducing to that IPA-like, ice-cream-float-looking blob sitting in the middle of the brew. Lingers a while with sticky lace.
The nose is undoubtedly Jolly Pumpkin- funk city with lots of underlying tart fruits, although this is probably one of most harmonious JPs I've experienced. The tartness and yeasty funk are joined fairly seamlessly while the hibiscus and rose elements pull everything in a very floral/red-fruited direction- aromas of tart mandarin orange, banana, cranberry, pomegranate, nectarine and some faint green apple, while the yeast adds a thick horse blanket and hints of clove and pepper. This actually, reminds me most of a much darker 'La Roja' with a bit of age on it.
This is the first JP I've had that's not totally fresh, and that bit of age really makes for an elegant delivery. Medium bodied, the brew is dominated by a blanket of yeasty creaminess that's both soft but dense and wrapped around an ever-present juicy fruitiness whose tartness is softened, allowing a bit of sweetness to peek through. Flavors are heavy on the hibiscus, nectarine and apple, while that tartness starts to take over as the yeast wanes on the finish, leaving just its impressions of pepper and Brett-funk.
A very tasty and well done JP. I'm glad to see the hibiscus, which tends to dominate anything, really integrating itself into the presentation, adding complexity without stealing any. And with the impeccable mouthfeel, I may never drink a JP fresh again.
