Poured from a capped 750 mL bottle into a Duvel tulip. Moderately gentle hand. Batch 304,306. Bottled on 02/12/14.

A: Cloudy orange with a pink tint. 3 fingers of rocky off-white head. Good retention. Gushed a bit with opening. Nice lacing.

S: Lightly musty, lightly tart Belgian yeast. Hints of rose petals and other florals. Lemon. Interesting strawberry notes.

T: Tart and lightly fruity up front with development of a faint pale maltiness and mild hop bitterness. Berry sweetness flashes before a fairly dry finish. A floral, slightly sour bitterness lingers in the aftertaste. Alcohol is minimal.

M: Moderate to high carbonation, but not overly prickly. Actually rather smooth feeling. Light to moderate body. Good vehicle for the flavors noted above.

O: Another solid offering from Jolly Pumpkin. Enough embellishment to create some interesting depth, but even-handed enough not to overwhelm the underlying base beer. The berry notes, in particular, are quite nice.

Prost!

Pours a hazy golden orange color with a rocky white head that leaves little bits of lacing.

Smells of bright, tart fruits and some floral hops.

Tastes of the floral notes with supporting fruits and malt. Floral notes lead off with a bit of what I assume are rose and hibiscus. Tart fruits come through next with cherries, lemon, and cranberries taking over. An earthy bitterness comes next adding depth before a touch of hay and funk make an appearance. Fills out some more with bread notes before a fairly dry finish.

Mouthfeel is medium with a slightly assertive amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a delightful saison with plenty of fruit character, but price and availability knock it down a peg.

The beer has lots of tart qualities on the nose.

The flavor follows of funk and tart of almost pickle juice or cider. There's lots of malt with a light cherry flavor. A very drinkable beer with a heavy handed amount of barnyard Brett funk.

The funk and tart qualities are well done for the saison style (or newer attempt at the style that I prefer).

A: Pours a murky amber with a mountainous beige head that leaves a ton of lace as it slowly recedes.

S: Aromas of white pepper, hibiscus, rose hips, caramel, cedar, cypress, red tea, minerals, oak, must, and wild yeast fill the nose.

T: Notes of cider vinegar, cedar, oak, chalk, red tea, caramel, white pepper, sage, lemon, rose hips, hibiscus, must, and lactic wild yeast funk flit across the palate. The finish is oddly short and muddled with an overpowering jumble of floral, mineral, and wild yeast notes.

M: Very, very slight in body with overpowering carbonation. The thin, watery body really undercuts the complexity of the flavors, leading me to believe that something may have been off about this batch and/or bottle.

O: I kind of adore where Jolly Pumpkin was trying to go with this particular batch. The problem is that the brewer apparently just was not able to pull it together this time out. Still, I have graded leniently because I feel that had this beer been sampled under better conditions and turned out as the brewer had obviously intended, it would have been an absolute knockout. I'll sample next year's edition when it comes out and see how things have changed in order to get a better understanding of this beer's qualities and potential.
