Sour apples, pear, and cherries. It is bold, and unafraid to show it's colors as a sour beer. I don't get any traditional saison aromas coming off of this beer, but it doesn't matter, my mind is puckering just smelling this.

Mostly clear with just a slight touch of haze. It's a deep red color with a slightly pink head. Sheets of lacing coat the glass as the liquid depletes from the vessel.

The first thing I noticed is how highly carbonated this is.. it almost immediately foams up when it touches my tongue. Body is medium and brings on flavors of pear, apple, and other light, crisp summer fruits. It is far less sour on the palate than on the olfactory senses, but that doesn't make it less enjoyable.

Not too many spot on saisons this side of the ocean. At least to this degree. This one has some nice funk and interesting rose and floral characters. Nice to drink, but you'll need to appreciate beers like Fantome to really dig on this one.

Bottle purchased from Belmont Station in Portland, OR. Shared with @LaitueGonflable and @tobeerornottobe in Sydney, Australia.

Pours an immediately odd color: bright rose-like red, with a huge, frothing head of pink bubbles. Lacing forms in chunky patches down the glass. Body is very light, as you'd expect from a wild ale, or anything from Jolly Pumpkin's stable. Really good stuff.

Nose is intense: big, funky oak-barrel acidity with a touch of lactic to it. Everything is mellowed, however, by a bright and fragrant floral note from the rosehips and perhaps the hibiscus. The hibiscus, though, is more an afterthought: a clear, sweeter karkadeh note that sits around while the other character evanesce and dissipate. It's absolutely gorgeous.

Taste is lighter than I expected, and is a little disappointing for it (if you can ever call such a beer disappointing). There's a bright fragrance on the front: more rose and floral notes, but this doesn't translate into much in the flavour proper. Mid-way through we're left with a much lighter, slightly woody and carbonic emptiness, with just a sting of pepper in its tail. Don't get me wrong, this is still a very good brew, but I feel like it's "good" where it could have been "exceptional".

Feel is also light. Again, it's not unexpected, but I feel as though a bit more sharpness, even a slice of true acidity would have helped here.

I loved this beer. This is despite my feeling that I've said some less than complimentary things about it in this review. But like all really good things, I want it to be as good as it can be; and this beer is so close to perfection that I wanted it to get there for real.

A beautiful blood orange amber with a thick reddish head. The lacing too is very thick on the glass.

Tart and floral fruity aroma. Rosehips. Hibiscus. Green apple. and a little apricot.

tart pear and apple flavor followed by sweet berries. lemon zest. This is fruity and floral all the way. So refreshing and perfect for summer degrees over 100.

Smooth and clean. Goes down very easily. Its highly carbonated so beaware.

This is by far the best saison/farmhouse ale i have ever had. This means a lot since these are my favorite styles. Pat on the back Jolly Pumpkin for producing such a wonderful brew.

A surprisingly light pink colored pour, slightly hazy, with slight amber hues as well. Small off-white head that leaves nice stick down the glass.

The aroma is quite lovely, with a huge amount of floral (rose?) aroma, with some dark berries and citrus notes, along with a bit of earth and classic Jolly Pumpkin tartness/funk.

A lovely combination of floral and citrus notes, mild funk, rose petals, earth, and funky yeast character. This is a complex though incredibly drinkable saison.

Medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation.

I love it!

ST: 750 poured into a wine glass. Blend 6, brewed 1-27-2011.

A: Two-fingers of creamy white head sits on top of light, clear, amber, toffee brown.

S: Sour fruit, citrus, hops, banana, crispy sour dough bread.

T: Sour stony orange, lemon, with earthy bread tones and bright zingy citrus on the finish with herbal rose and left over bread crust.

M: Medium, but dry.

O: A very enjoyable beer that uses unusual ingredients well. The ingredients do not take over the beer, but the rose petals and hibiscus are present. The rose parts and hibiscus adds an enjoyable herbal note to the sour, earthy, citrus tone of the beer.

Blend 6 / Bottled 1-27-2011

A - Two plus fingers worth of audibly fizzy crisp even egg shell colored head with a rounded top... Excellent retention... The color is a very pale reddish copper... A moderate bit of random patterned moderate paced carbonation...

S - The aroma is both familiar and refreshingly new... Lavender... Loaded with floral aroma which are never overpowering... Apples... Pears... A slight Belgian yeast component... Quite pleasant and fairly complex...

T - Floral and fruit notes clash at the on set... Light raspberries... Apple... Pears... Perhaps even a hint of kiwi... The floral notes are even and consistent throughout... A slight bit of funkiness... There is a slight tart bite on the finish... Very interesting brew...

M - Medium bodied... Quite sturdy... Briskly carbonated... A bit "juicy..." Even and consistent...

D - I have found Jolly Pumpkin offerings to be hit or miss with no real middle ground... Fortunately, I can confirm this to be a definite hit... Loads of complexity and character... Quite unique and refreshing... Sophisticated... I wish I were able to get my hand on this on a regular basis... Very close to rounding the scores in the 1st four categories up to 4.5, but not quite... Nicely done...
