Poured a 750 mL bottle of Batch 378 into an oversized red wine glass to capture the aroma.
A: Golden honey, it poured with an immense head that was white and puffy, which slowly died to a normal head.
S: Sour, funky orange rye with a toffee sweetness (kind of like apple juice) and white wine alcohol.
T: Sour grating rye which crumbles into a lemon-lime bitterness with vodka alcohol and piney hops.
M: Mildly syrupy but big and frothy. Not quite crisp.
D: It is very drinkable.

Picked this up over the holidays when I sadly missed out on their lambic limited release. My label specifically calls this a "Rye Tripple."
Poured into a tulip glass, and overflow into a pint glass. The bottle started spewing like champagne immediately, and even after pouring into the glass, foam continued rising out of the bottle so I had to pour it into another glass. So, in the glass was a hazy orange beer with half a glass of stiff white frothy head. It eventually settles down to a good head that stays with the beer, leaving some of that stiff stuff on the glass.
Funky aroma that you come to expect from the Pumpkin, but also a rather sweet aroma there as well. Kind of a sour aroma wafting up too.
More of a tart flavor than I might have expected. Some of the rye comes through too. Definitely peppery, in fact, that ends up being the dominant lingering flavor on my palate. Interestingly enough, turning the glass to drink in some of the lacing, you get a little bit of an extra funky flavor. There is a tiny bit of sweetness floating around there too.
Not sure that I'd drink a whole lot of this, but it is definitely an interesting experiment for the Jolly Pumpkin guys. Keep up the good work.

Ken's bottle, lovely stuff. Malty aroma. Enormous amount of foam in my pour, unfiltered grapefruit coloured body. Wild wild, love the brett, good malt and yeast, and a little rye edge. A minority in that it tastes better than it smells.Very smooth, lots of head even 15 minutes in.

Baudelaire Ale Absurd pours a copper color. Looks a little hazy. Light gives it a distinct orange look. Carbonation looks to very active. A careful pour resulted in a head that stands over four fingers tall! For what it’s worth, it’s slow to recede. Frankly, it’s a little annoying. Lacing was really nice and thick…as you might have guessed.

The nose is interesting and good. One whiff is all it takes to recognize the presence of Brett and its barnyard funkiness. It is a rather strong presence, but it smells quite good. Earthy, musky, and grainy notes are all prevalent throughout. It definitely has a strong, spicy character. Belgian yeast is noted and imparts a nice, phenolic scent to the mix. There might be a touch of spicy rye, but it’s tough to tell amidst all the other strong scents. Alcohol goes unnoticed.

The flavor is quite good. It starts out with waves of earthy and grainy notes. The continue throughout. Musky and funky flavors follow. Brett really has a big impact on the overall flavors. It is strong in the mix, but tastes delicious. It doesn’t come across as overpowering. Belgian yeast emerges, and tastes delicious as usual. It definitely adds spicy phenols and clove flavors. I’m not getting a whole lot of rye, but I’m not surprised. The flavor profile is big and complex. Rye just seems a little lost in there. Alcohol is masked well.

The body is medium. Carbonation is overactive and a little buzzy. Less bubbles would be an improvement. For what’s it worth, it’s tasty and does go down relatively easy.

Jolly Pumpkin did a pretty nice job with Baudelaire Ale Absurd. I’m not a huge Jolly Pumpkin fan, but this is good beer. The only problems I have with it are the excessive bubbles and the lacking rye presence. I really wish the rye were more noticeable. All in all, this is good stuff though. I’m not sure there are many bottles floating around, but if you have the opportunity…it is worth checking out.

Appearance - Pours into my Bell Tulip as a hazy, copper color with over three fingers of white, billowy head that I pegged to dissipate quickly but instead lingers around, leaving thick, chunky lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smell - Ahh, the familiar JP funk immediately hits my nose. Green apple, spices, barnyard funk such as leather and wet hay, sour funk, yeast, and a hint of lemon.
Taste - An immediate citrus hit that then delicately melds with the relatively heavy spices including clove (and I assume come from the rye in the beer). A very "Belgian" aspect to this beer yet with a JP twist to it as with all of their beers. Soft fruit flavors come through such as apple peel, lemon zest which lend itself to a satisfying tartness. This is not a Rye beer. This is an AWA. So delicious.
Mouthfeel - Heavier bodied than expected, loads of carbonation, slight warming alcohol sensation down the throat but ultimately not noticeable.
Drinkability - Marvelous. This beer is so similar, yet so different from the other JP beers I have experienced. As with most of the JP lineup, this is not so much a quaffable beer as it is one to enjoy while sitting outside in the fresh air, enjoying life and nature to its fullest. Coincidentally that is exactly what I am doing and I must say I am thoroughly enjoying this beer and would love to try it with a bit more age on it.

A 750 mL capped bottle served at the Ann Arbor brewpub. I was disappointed that Io was sold out, but this turned out to be a very good choice. Billed as a 'rye tripple ale'.

A: The ale has a golden tripel hue that is noticeably darkened by the presence of rye, the result a bronzed golden brown that is opaque. The ale is well-carbonated, lively in both my glass and the bottle. Two fingers of craggy, dense foam in the glass; an oozing foam, at times running out over the mouth of the bottle. As you'd expect, significant lacing ensued.

S: The nose is funky, but not as funky as most JP offerings. Tripel aromas, sweet candi sugars and peppery spice, stand out, holding their own against the funk. The rye is spicy and bready but pales in comparison to the tripel. A well-balanced nose.

T: I enjoy the complex breadiness that rye lends to a beer. In this one, I had to search quite a while before the dark spicy notes came through. They are nestled behind the tripel and the funk, a tough duo to get past. While the ale is funky in the Jolly Pumpkin bretty kind of way, it is not domineering. Instead, the light lemony citrus flavor dries the palate and leads the way for the tripel's sweet candi sugars and stronger alcohol content. All three flavors, despite being starkly different, work nicely together.

M: The prickly lemony citrus stays with me through every sip, setting the bar for flavor. The ample carbonation further accentuates the hotness, scrubbing with a caustic feel. Very lively and very good.

D: ksak and I split the bottle and decided to grab a second one to bring home with us. A complex ale that seems to work best when young, before the brett gets all into the tripel flavors and dries them out.

Shared a bottle of this yesterday while outside enjoying the 70º+ weather. Review from notes.

Gusher, big time! Cap didn't fully come off, and it sprayed out in a downward shower. A couple full glasses of foam, then finally some tawny orange ale was visible. The foam was full of large, sparkling bubbles. Nice clarity with racing trails of carbonation.

Aromas of leather, wood, wild tartness & dry brett funk.

Bright tart fruit, floral chamomile notes, mildly sweet with a drying finish. Some spice character, possibly from the rye. The wild yeast was a little strange, with the odd sterile gauze note, but ultimately not distracting. There was a touch of alcohol as it warmed. Very effervescent. It may say Rye Trippel on the label, but it's more of a wild ale than anything.

Tasty and unique, like much of JP's output. Worth a try if you see it, but watch out for the gush. It was in the fridge for a full week before opening...

Another thank you to sweemzander for busting out another saison for our pre-Milwaukee Brewfest tasting!

A - Bright golden amber with a clear body and a beautiful dense off-white head with great retention and patchy lace coating the glass.

S - Tons of awesome saison aroma with great lemon zest and Belgian yeast funk. A bit of slight barnyard comes through. A little rye comes out but it's not very sharp. This is a phenomenal aroma I can't get enough of!

T - Sharp rye comes out in the flavor much more so than the aroma lets on. It actually overwhelms most everything else. Lemon citrus and Belgian yeast with a light candi sugar sweetness too. Pale malts reside in the back of the flavor profile with a tiny hint of funk that pokes out too.

M - Very sharp carbonation with a big sour-ish bite with a wild tang to the finish. It tickles on the way down.

D - Very good take on the saison style that's completely unique. A good drinkable beer that would be perfect during fall!

Very cool bottle that Ditmier pulled out at a tasting at his house a couple weeks ago... Freaking Cool Eric!!

Big foamy white head atop a hazy orange brew... the head lasts forever... great lacing...

Nose is great... apple skins with some spicy yeasty phenols.. dry and a bit of yeast funk...

flavor has a nice pronounced citrus bump that melds well into some spicy notes that I can only assume comes from the rye... but the Belgian aspect is still plenty present and shows some clove phenols too.. a bit of white peppercorn ... some mild alcohol that doesn't really distract.. some lemon zest with warmth...

Bigger body than expected, but the carbonation is fairly abundant and helps smooth everything together...

Very nice... and I really liked it... I do say that this is the best JP beer that I've had .... complex... and almost too complex... I would like to try this with 6 months or a year on it to give some time to really meld.

golden amber color with a good haze to it and great carbonation visible throughout. huge white head on top that led to a ton of lacing up and down the sides of the glasses.

aroma is light at first but builds as the night goes on. light citrus touches, fresh herbals, light flowery mix an a nice grain bill seem to support a rather complex flavor. and that is exactly what i get with a quick dose of lemon right off the bat. it transforms into a nice pear and apple flavors, loads of grass and quick hits of lavender and a touc of peppery like spice seal it. this is exactly what i was looking for. clean, crisp, sparkling and refreshing.

Bottle shared by Ken, 750ml into a tulip. Batch 378. My first JP.

Poured a hazy dark orange, with a HUGE 4+ finger head. Soapy and leaving some sticky lace behind. Nose has some light lemon, grass, funk, citrus zest and tart fruit notes. Taste is much less tart than the nose would suggest, lemon, breadiness, some rye, light alcohol with a bit of a tart pucker at the end. More complex and less tart than the nose would suggest. Medium full feel, high carbonation. Very nice drinkability, one of my highlights for the evening.

Big thanks to yourefragile for opening up this bottle. Long time want. Served in a Jolly Pumpkin tulip.

Pours a clear light copper with a huge, rocky white head of foam. Very creamy and extremely long lasting. Cap throughout and really nice lacing on the sides of the glass. The nose has a bit of oxidized malt along with a sizable rye presence. Some light pepper and phenols as well.

Flavor begins with rye and a fairly-heavy phenolic presence. A bit of rye in the background, as well as a touch of bread. Body is light, dry, and crisp. A bit bitter.

Very mild touch of bubblegum in the nose as it warms.

Probably a bit past its prime, and ages different than most Jolly Pumpkin beers. I'm not sure what the design was, but this doesn't have any oak, funk, or acidity. As a plain tripel, it's not bad, but it isn't anything noteworthy either.

Poured from the bottle a hazy greyish-orange with two fingers of off-white head.

Aroma of white wine, yeast, tart green apple, lemon, earthy funk. and brett.

The taste was much like the aroma. White wine, tart green apple and lemon along with brett and earthy yeast notes. Tartness lingered thru the finish. The 8% abv was well hidden.

Medium bodied and a bit dry with a sharper carbonation.

Another enjoyable beer from Jolly Pumpkin.

(A)- Gusher! Pours a clear mahogany color that produced a giant bubbly white head that took a minute or two to dissipate. Tons of spotted lace here and there. Yet another seriously dark color for a saison.

(S)- A dry, yet fruity hay light funk with a hint of a light spice. A good fruitiness behind it that I cannot quite pinpoint. Loving the combo of dry hay funk, spice, and fruit.

(T)- A spicy rye-like front with some dark fruits. Finishes dry with a light hay/straw/ funk components.

(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. A nice spice in there with the dry and hay funk with just a tiny bit of bitterness.

(D)- Another solid yet unique take on the style from Jolly Pumpkin. An all-around fitting beer with a light spice and good dry hay funk/fruit profile. I love to see something unique like this.
