Bottle

A - Dark golden hazy beer with a small white head

S - Tart, white vinegar, lactic acid and oak. Really tart in the nose that makes you almost want to back off while smelling it

T - Tart vinegar with lactic acid but not as tart as it smells. Slightly metallic, lemon peel and a small amount of funk to it

MF - Light carbonation with a creamy mouthfeel overall.

O - Decent Lambic but not as good as the Belgians. Soft sourness to it but not much funk to it. I think this would be better if it was as tart as it smelled

Had out of Duvel style bottle bought from the brewery

A: Straw yellow with about one finger creamy head that sticks around

S: Smells fruity, barnyard, and a little acedic

T: I think this has a great balance of fruity belgiany esters and sourness. The sourness is definitely noticable but is not overpowering. Delicious

M: Good carbonation, not sticky or over or undercarbonated.

D: Very drinkable for a beer blended with lambic, wish I could have gotten more of these.

A - pours with a very short lived loose, white film. settles to a thin ring. the beer is almost crystal clear, pale yellow in color...odd for a sour/wild.

S - nice mix of sour/funk, with prominent green apple, farm fields, lemon rind and a pleasant grassiness. smells very much Belgian and authentic.

T - begins with a flash of sweet, almost corny and wheaty malt flavors. turns towards slightly lactic sourness, bringing along some pear, green apple, and a slight funk.

M - lightly bodied with crisp carbonation. finishes extremely dry yet nicely balanced between sweet, sour, and funky. very well put together, thirst quenching, yet not overpowering in any way.

O - solid beer all around, very happy to have picked this up at an Ohio store recently. great balance, though nothing spectacular. would love to try again, if it can be found.

Perhaps mellow after 2 years but still the foamer. Dark brown, with initially lots of foam. Neutral aroma. A wild ale, some acidity, but not that sour. How shall I say it, dish soap soapy residue aftertaste? Good drinkability, though just OK. Thanks for the rarer one in these parts, Steve.

A huge thanks to Mikey (MIkey711) for this one. 4oz. pour from a capped 750ml bottle into a Hill Farmstead snifter. Had at a tasting on 6/4/11. Reviewed from notes.

A: Standard pour yields a .25 finger fine white head with good retention. Beer is a clear goldenrod. Lacing is stringy with good cling. Solid.

S: Nose is straw, lemon barnyard funk, and Brett in the back. Also citrus, apple rind, and some lemon zest. Not overwhelmingly aromatic but pleasantly mellow.

T: Lemon, apple, citrus, band-aid, and straw. Tartness grows towards the middle with a Brett presence really coming on strong. Slightly lactic, more citrus towards the end with a quiet apple finish and an apple skin bitter aftertaste. Very enjoyable.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Abrasive and prickly in the mouth and filmy going down. Smooth at the end with a mellow finish and a quiet aftertaste. Great for the style.

O: This beer is essentially a carbonated and therefore, livelier, crisper, and ultimately, better Lambicus... which in itself was a beer that I enjoyed a lot. A big sleeper in my opinion.

11.2 oz bottle purchased at Winking Lizard. Blend 1, bottled on 12-1-10. Pours copper with a small head. Big lemon aroma with a touch of barnyard and Belgian yeast. Flavor is really lemony with some tart funk and a crisp finish. This beer is awesome and extremely drinkable. Not as bracingly sour as Lambicus and a bit more interesting than Bam... the best of both. I see a lot of negative reviews here, and I guess if you're not a sour fan I can see the point. But if you like sours, this is a really good beer... although the price is fairly insane.

Hazy golden in color with a small bu lasting off-white head.

Nice wild aroma, lambic-like, funky, oaky, and lemony. I like it.

The flavor is big on the lemon with considerable -bal notes, oak and bourbon. Some barnyard funk.

Medium body with less sourness than i expected, but hey, sourness is overrated. Mostly hype if you ask me.

Pretty solid beer overall.

This one was shared by funkydelic with beeruser, StayWhatYouAre2, 67couple, others, and myself at a recent tasting graciously hosted by beeruser! Blend 1! Bottle 12-01-10! 330 mL bottle. Served from bottle into a Duvel Parra tulip. Poured golden yellow with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, massive funk, tart cherry, sour, and pineapple. The flavor was of sweet malt, sour, big funk, and citrus. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was an excellent brew. Did I really just get pineapple on the nose of this one and citrus in the flavor!? Nice... The nose on this one was excellent as was the flavor. Everything on this brew worked really well together at complimenting each other and not leaving any component 'out to dry'. A must try for any sour fan out there that has not done so already...

A- Pours a hazed golden yellow color. Two finger white head shows great retention. Tons of web style lacing all over the glass when I drink this one down.

S- Barnyard funk really stands out in this one a lot in the inital aroma. Cider vinegar with hints of oak come through next with a hint of lemon as well. More funk and something else almost peach like in the ending along with a nice linger of alcohol. The funk really gives this beer a interesting appeal that makes my mouth water.

T- Banryard funk right upfront with a light vinegar flavor to it. The oak to me makes a nice presence right after this and I feel should be right there. A nice tart lemon flavor comes in next which packs a nice light sourness to it. Peaches once again show themselves in the ending but ever so lightly to me. Another cider like funk rides the ending along with a crisp warming alcohol.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is fantastic for this beer beyond the first pour I think. Lots of funk and oak notes left on the palate. Aftertaste is hints of sourness and alcohol along with a boatload of cider vinegar funk. Flavors were well balanced for the style. No off flavors were present although it would be hard to tell anyways. Heavy alcohol drying on the palate which I expected from this beer.

O- I freakin loved this beer. I thought the funk on this was perfect not making it hard to drink. The ABV was drying and went well with the oak that seemed to bring this beer together quite well. I am looking for a couple more bottles of this beer as it is going to be good with a year or two on it!

330ml bottle---Blend 2 (bottled 3/15/11). Poured into my Rodenbach snifter.

Pours cloudy straw color with an inch of white head. Fairly standard for the style.

Smells of some straw, white wine, slight funk

Taste is pleasant. Slightly tart but nowhere near puckering. Some lemon, dry white wine, orange peel towards the end. Not actually that funky on the tongue and I don't get much oak bitterness. Actually backs off flavor-wise on the end.

Carbonation is medium, not bad. Fairly smooth actually. If you like more tart and mouth-drying, this is not your sour.

Overall glad I was able to try this and pick several up; Had been wanting to try this for a while.

First of all, a huge thanks to both sirotan and GuruDel for hooking me up with a couple bottles of this amazing beer from JP. Thanks again and cheers!

Second of all, I just do not understand why the Chicago crowd (I'm from Chicago...) absolutely ripped this a new one. I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinions but something doesn't add up here...oh well, not my problem.

Split with my brother-in-law in memory of my grandfather. We miss and love you!

Appearance - Pours into a Ladyface Tulip with a hazy golden straw color. About a finger of fizzy white head is achieved with a careful pour (read this may be a gusher - no such case here - perfect amount of carbonation). The head dissipates slowly and leaves nice lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell - Damn is that a potent aroma. More funk than I can remember in most JP beers, lactic sourness, slight wood (not so much rotting as others have mentioned), barnyard, wet hay, and some nice strawberry and banana aromas along with Belgian spice/yeast.

Taste - Thankfully similar to the nose. Acidic and nice tartness up front. More tart than any JP beers I can think of off the top of my head (that I've tried). More so lemon and green apple peel tart flavors emerge as the beer warms, the typical and even more so than average barnyard funk midway through, and finishes dry and spicy with a hint of vanilla and oak.

Mouthfeel - Lighter bodied, decent carbonation, finishes a hint dry.

Drinkability - Immensely so. One of my favorite JP beers. I find it different than the "normal" line up of JP beers which makes it so intriguing to me...because it IS out of the ordinary of their typical beer. Absolutely can't wait to have this again and am SO thankful to my fellow BA's for hooking me up with this beer. Downright tasty.

Blend 2 Bottled 3-15-2011. Poured into my Russian River -tion glass.

Pours an every-so-slightly hazy orange/tangerine with absolutely no head. Minimal active carbonation seen in the glass. Nice looking.

The nose has tons of oak, funk, and acidic armoas. Total funkiness and barnyard going on here. The oak is pretty dominating as well.

The taste is full of funk, oak, lactic acid, and a slight butteriness on the end palate. The flavor does die pretty quickly after a sip. Take your tums with this one.

The mouth feel is quite prickly and relatively thin bodied. Very refreshing.

I'm very happy to have tried this brew and would love to taste it again with a few years on it.

Review from written notes.

Into a small tulip glass it pours a peachy opaque orange, a wispy skim across the surface after it settles down relatively quickly to other JP beers. Spotty lace all around the glass.

Acidic, tart fruits, lychee, passion fruit, grapefruit. Lactic tartness alternating with a slight natural fruit sweetness later on as it warms.

Pink grapefruit, peach, lychee... the fruity tropical citrus flavors dominate. Intensely fruity, tart, and dry. Tannic oak dries out the finish, cidery with a slight stickiness on the lips. Effervescent and lush with juicy fruit flavors. I could easily drink this all day and would never tire of it. Super fruit forward, not intensely sour, and very quenching. What's not to like?

Note to Jolly Pumpkin: Please put this into regular distribution! TIA

330 ml bottle, Blend 2, bottled 3-15-2011. Served in a Unibroue tulip glass, the beer pours a cloudy gold color with about a half inch white head. Head retention and lacing are both decent. Aroma is lemon and orange peel, white grapes, tart apples, funk and oak. The taste is similar to the aroma, the brew tastes like lemon peel, funk, oak, bready malt, white grapes and light tropical fruit. It's somewhat tart, but the tartness isn't very strong and it doesn't linger around for long in the finish, either. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and creamy with good carbonation. I think it's a decent brew, but I was hoping the tartness would have a little more kick to it. Hopefully it will get better with age, but right now there's nothing that impresses me about this beer. I expected more from Jolly Pumpkin with this brew. For $8.99 a bottle, my money could have been spent on something better. It's still worth a try if you're never had it before.

Bottle: Poured a clear bright golden color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of tart and sour notes is quite pleasant. Taste is a very nice mix between some tart notes with some sourness and some medium barnyard notes. Acidity is quite low and sourness level is maybe more present then in the usual JP beers. Body is about average with good carbonation. Another well brewed beer though not necessarily my favourite from this brewer.

Generositywolf77 strikes again!

A - GUSHER! All the sediment was stirred up resulting in a cloudy golden brew topped, briefly, by a white head. Nice lace adorns the glass.

S - Awesome barnyard nose of horse-blanket and wild yeast. Lambic aroma with lactic sourness and complimentary Brett additions too. Tart acid sourness is inviting and mouthwatering as low fruit hints linger in the back and give it some depth.

T - A weird second-hand cigarette smoke thing hit me for a millisecond on my first sip. Odd. Sweet pale malts fall to the back with a sharp Brett and lactic acid combination funk to the flavor. Barnyard city!

M - Crisp and brisk carbonation is refreshing with a smooth light-medium body and a gorgeous tart sour acidity to the finish.

D - Great drinkability for a wild that could go down like a potent, funky session ale. Very nice brew!

Batch 4, bottled 12/23/2011. Consumed 05/07/13 using an Upland snifter. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: Pours a hazy orange color with virtually no head. Minimal lacing, minimal retention. 3/5

Smell: The aroma is loaded with medicinal brett notes and yogurty funk. You know the smell of old wet wood that is left in the heat? There is some of that too mixed with spice and oak. The nose is certainly interesting, but I do not love it. 3.5/5

Taste: Tons of "sweat"-smelling funk in finish. Oak too. Substantially less yogurt quality, but more funk than the nose. Seriously, tons and tons of bretty funk here. Has a sharp, but not very strong, sharpness with a little lemon character. 3.25/5

Mouthfeel: Light-plus bodied, minimal carbon. Decent tartness. Modestly dry. 3/5

Overall: A harsh, aggressively flavored funky beer. I see the flavor profile as polarizing, and its not something I prefer.

Cost: $10 for a 11.2 oz stubby bottle.

Appearance: Hazy amber with no head, very little visible carbonation.

Smell: Quite a bit of funk on this. Fruity acetic notes, lactic sourness, rotting wood and soil. Strawberry and sour peach fruitiness.

Taste & mouthfeel: Mildly sour, but quite funky. Juicy acetic strawberry notes, lighter lactic sourness. Great backbone of oak and funk. Little white wine vinegar, a touch of acetone. Almost no carbonation. Finishes tannic, almost spicy. Pretty nice stuff, highly quaffable.

About this time we were hankering for an IPA, stout, barleywine. Something to mix things up from the sour barrage.

Weird 12oz bottle, similar to Green Flash, but this is not Green Flash.

It's sour. Feel the pain. Enjoy the pain.

Honestly, we were a little sour fatigued at this point. My already not very detailed notes became even less detailed.

Smell is old but not unpleasant. Taste is bland but not unpleasant.

I had absolutely no idea what this was, but as soon as the reveal was jolly pumpkin we saw the telltale jolly pumpkin signs we had missed.

Blend 1 - Bottled 12-01-10

Appearance - Pours a cloudy, mystical and sickly orange. Less than half a finger of head presents itself and then dissipates into an acidic foam. Fairly average lacing here. This looks like some kind of potion.

Smell - Definitely the most sour Jolly Pumpkin I've smelled. The tart smell overpowers the hints of light malts. A very lemon-like smell with granny-smith apple present as well. Very funky smelling.

Taste - The most acidic tasting beer I've ever tasted. This tastes like it has ten freshly squeezed lemons in it. Very tart and bitter. The aftertaste gives me that slight chest burn I get from drinking straight lemon juice. It is very refreshing, however. And there are multiple layers of taste that are slighly difficult to unmask. A slight yeast undertone with light malts. As in the smell, reminds me of some sort of magic elixir.

Drinkability - Mouthfeel - Very carbonated and sour. A nice bitter mouthfeel thats acidity becomes almost unbearable as I hold it in my mouth. A very addictive beer that quenches my thirst.

Blend 2, Bottled 3-15-2011. Poured into a tulip.

4.0 A: Hazed yellowish brown color. Three fingers of dense white froth. Retention is good and plenty of semi-regular lacing is left behind.

4.0 S: Musty basement, horsey musk, bleu cheese, peach, orange rind, and lemon. More funky than acidic, but there is some tanginess from the lactic acid. No acetic acid. Oak and some vanilla. Straw and neutral wheatiness.

4.0 T: Musty and musky again and lots of it. The brett contributes much to this. Again, bleu cheese with peach and lemony fruitiness. There's a lot more oak in the taste and there's a moderate tannic astringency as well. Vanilla is mild, though very detectable. Tangy peachy lactic acid and no acetic acid. The pucker factor on this is extremely low. Wet straw and wheat.

4.0 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation that is lightly spritzy. Light creaminess and very smooth.

4.0 D: I think this is pretty solid. Good flavors and a good mouthfeel. Nothing really impresses me, but I'll drink this again.

I was cautious about opening a gusher so I chilled this one down in my freezer before opening. JP dregs going back into suspension can sometimes mess up a beer. Especially something delicate like this.

Opaque/murky golden body with a fluffy white head. Great lacing sticks to the sides.

I can already smell this funky beast as I'm pouring it. First whiff I get that amazing horsey funk I found in Lambicus. Acidity, wheat flour and an herbal/earthy note to round out the nose.

This beer has a dry/bitter brett flavor (maybe also picking up on some hopping) that cuts through the vinegary sourness that is left to slightly burn the back of your throat. Gorgonzola cheese, gum base, fresh flowers, and extremely dry on the finish. So dry that it makes you salivate. Green apple, vinegar and sweet tarts really start to open up as it warms.

If you don't like JP's funk then this beer isn't for you since it dominates the flavor. This is like all the funk of something you'd expect from a big american wild but packed into something you could session which is sort of what Bam Biere was.

01/26/11- Review of a 33 cL bottle of Blend 1 bottled 12-01-10 at the Winking Lizard on Bethel.
A: Burnt-orange amber and cloudy, it poured with a nice creamy head that died to a good film and collar with lots of lacing.
S: Nice apple core tartness and some barnyard funk (typical of Jolly Pumpkin), slightly floral with some lemon... actually this reminds me of a subdued Cantillon Gueuze.
T: Slightly sweet orange with a lemon tartness and some barnyard apple core. It's all a little creamier and maltier than you'd expect.
M: Nice creamy frothiness with a cleansing crisp tartness.
D: Great. I had a couple and I'd have more if they weren't $10/bottle.

Major props to my buddy Matt for bringing me three of these from Cleveland. He picked it up from the Cleveland Heights Winking Lizard. This beer pours a muddied Purdue gold (awesome by the way) with a funky looking, lumpy off white head which laced the glass. It looks beautiful. It smells great too. It smells of dry cider, pears, hibiscus, and lactic acid. It's sharp and pungent when it hits the nose. The flavor it top notch as well. It reminds me of a stronger tasting Fleur (the way it's drinking some 8 months after bottling). It's floral, acidic, full of granny smith apples and has a sour that is near perfect, not too light and not too sour. This beer melts in your mouth. That's the easiest way of saying it but it drinks light and just dissolves into your palate. It doesn't leave you squirming with the aftertaste and leaves you wanting more. I don't know why the last couple of reviews have been so negative. This beer is excellent. I'm looking forward to trying this after I sit on it for a couple years.

Blend 2- bottled 3/15/11

A: Pours a light yellow color, almost like a yellow jolly rancher. The pour yields a dense 1 finger white head. This has some heavy carbonation. Some light lacing.

S: Smells phenomenal, like very tart lemons just bursting with wild yeast. I'm very surprised at how much this smells like a lambic and not so much Bam. This is as wild as any lambic I've smelled before. The aroma is very soft while remaining fresh, vibrant, and funky.

T: Ok, I get more Bam here but the lambic still plays an important role. It starts off with some nice tart lemon, green apple/pear, stinky cheese, and sweat sock funk. The finish is the snappy dry finish that Bam Biere provides from all of that brettanomyces. Some sourness washes over the back of my tongue for a brief moment. Although the finish is very abrupt a fair amount of funkiness remains in your mouth afterwards.

M: Very dry, Very highly carbonated.

O: A good case of aroma over flavor but overall this wins out anyway. I wish they were a little more generous with the amount of lambic used in this, I would hate to see the price then but it would really benefit this brew. This is a nice beer for people that enjoy Jolly Pumpkin, it really has their signature flavor.
