i have had very very few sours and wilds with coffee, so this is a treat, but its also one of the weirdest beers i can remember, and out little tasting party had mixed reviews of it. i like how subtle the coffee is, its earthy and adds a layer, but its far from the dominant aroma or flavor. there is some smoke in this which was unexpected but i like that aspect too. age may have something to do with flavor profiles shifting back or forward in the hierarchy here, this was brewed in 2012. lots of the jolly pumpkin culture in here, bretty and lactic and really really acidic, with the classic mouthfeel they often achieve. its effervescent on the carbonation and really lively, foamy, and dry on the palate. weird to get citrus and chocolate together, but i taste both on the back end of this. earthy like tanned hide too, rustic in that way, well made, but for us it was a good bottle to share. too far out there to drink a bomber solo, but one must appreciate the art which jolly pumpkin produces time and time again, this is very very different, but i would have liked to try to fresh to see if the coffee was more robust. worth picking up if you can find one around.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 4/24/2012. Pours fairly crystal clear nearly opaque very dark brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark roasted coffee, cocoa, chocolate, toast, lemon zest, green apple, tart cherry, pepper, clove, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, oak, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, coffee, spices, and fruity/funky yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of dark roasted coffee, cocoa, chocolate, toast, lemon zest, green apple, tart cherry, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, oak, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of fruity tartness and roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of coffee, cocoa, chocolate, lemon zest, green apple, tart cherry, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, oak, light leather, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Outstanding complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, coffee, spices, and fruity/funky yeast flavors; with a great malt/tartness/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly acidic/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding spiced dark saison style! All around awesome complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, coffee, spices, and fruity/funk yeast flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Jolly Pumpkin's De Viento is an interesting blend of coffee, spices, and Brettanomyces influence that combine to make a slightly tart coffee beer that is appealing to the senses, particularly in this winter weather. I wouldn't pay $18 for a bottle of this again, though.
Pours a massive beige head of, at first, small, but as time elapses, medium and large-sized bubbles, eventually developing a cavernous, rocky appearance. Retention is good, the head lasting several minutes, with excellent lacing as well, thick and decorative. Body is dark brown in color, with light bringing out hues of orange and lighter brown. Carbonation not visible through the opaque body.
Aroma of slightly soured, old coffee, chili powder or cayenne and assorted other spices, with a bit of Brettanomyces mustiness. As it warms, the scent becomes a bit too acrid, somewhat bile-like and not particularly pleasant.
Overall flavor is of soured dark malt and coffee, Brettanomyces mustiness, and miscellaneous spices. Front of palate experiences soured dark malt and coffee balanced by slight sweetness and paprika or cayenne powder. Mid-palate is primarily of soured coffee with modest chocolate, slight berry esters and tartness, and mild ground cayenne/paprika, and Brettanomyces mustiness. Back of palate detects bitterness from coffee or hops, soured coffee, Brettanomyces mustiness, and mild ethanol. Aftertaste of soured coffee, miscellaneous spices, and mild bitterness.
Beer is medium-bodied, with medium carbonation, resulting in a smoothly foamy, creamy mouthfeel. Closes semi-dry, with light astringency and stickiness on the palate.
