Brewed with a portion of locally grown heirloom hops, this beer showcases big citrus and herbal hop character with a firm, resinous bitterness. German specialty malts provide a bold amber color and lend a balanced maltiness.

Not sure of age, as this was found on clearance.
Caramel, toffee malt, floral hops, a touch of grapefruit, and grassy notes form the aroma. Malt overwhelms hops, which likely faded.
Flavor is lightly sweet and herbal/grassy hop laden throughout, with a moderately bitter, earthy finish. Fruity specialty malt and muted grapefruit add intrigue. There's a bit of a medicinal character.

Enjoyed from the 12 oz bottle ina snifter. This most interesting brew pours a bright amber color with a nice head of off white bubbles that dissipates to a thick ring of big bubbles, thin layer, and excellent lacing. Nose of citrus, caramel, and strong bittering hops. Flavors exceed he nose with a creamy citrus flavor of grapefruit and lemon combined with rich caramel and bittering hops that settles nicely on the back. Creamy and smooth as well as very reminiscent of Big Foot, yet smoother and less abrasive (no offense Big Foot!). Light carboantion makes for a slick and creamy mouth feel. Excellent. One of the best Saranac has brewed.
Cheers

Poured a clear dark copper hue with a one finger frothy white head. There was good lacing and good retention.
The smell featured a burnt caramel and herbal hop.
The taste offered earthy sweet malts balanced by a lingering herbal hop bite.
The mouthfeel was full and clean with a dry finish.
Overall a very tasty strong ale.

12 oz bottle into a teku.
Appearance: Pours a clear copper color with evident carbonation. The head is a finger high, and off-white in shade. It doesn't have a very attractive texture, and the retention isn't impressive. At least a nice ring of lacing is left on the glass. (3.5)
Smell: There's a healthy earthiness at first, with a touch of flowers floating around. Then the esters explode after it warms up. I pick up tons of peach, apricot, and cherry; while the hop profile develops a touch of tropical fruit, as well (just a touch, though). The floral notes become more evident, too. It's also slightly malty - think caramel, toffee, and pumpernickel bread. Just from the nose, this is the finest Saranac brew I've ever encountered. (4)
Taste: Oh my, this is really intriguing. It starts off with a rich spiciness, in conjunction with some caramel and bread. Then the esters explode (wait, I already said that). It finishes with a lot of apricot and peach, maybe even some cherry. The hops primarily bring bitterness - normally, that wouldn't be a great thing, but with the estery notes doing such heavy lifting, it's not a problem. There's no balls-out tropical fruit juice assault here: this is surprisingly complex and multi-faceted. (3.75)
Mouthfeel: Crisp for a big amber ale, but it still features some heft and finishing sweetness. Ergo, it's more of a sipper than anything. Carbonation is medium; while this beer isn't refreshing per se, it's easy to enjoy. (3.75)
Overall: A Saranac brew with a 93? Well, I would call it their best beer yet. It reminds me of Nugget Nectar - and that's a huge compliment. It just needs a bit more intricate balance to be NN's equal. Still, this is one I wish Saranac would brew year-round. (3.75)
3.8/5: Saranac did well here!
