Poured a deep brown color basically black, tan head sits atop.
The smell is somewhat sweet like chocolate sweet.
Taste is rather plain for my liking; there is a slight bitterness a hint of chocolate or coffee.
Mouthfeel is decent its a slight bit oily, some carbonation comes though.
It's allright. that’s about all I can say for this brew.

i have been assembling full lineups from breweries and randomly doin these horizontal tastings with my family. The saranac one from a couple weeks ago was more then epic as it took months to gather all of these, but it was a hell of a fun night! Big thanks to Alex for pulling through on the bulk of these, though some may have been a bit older it was cool to have like 20 beers

The pour was very nice with a rich dark brwon, nearly black coming through right away. Nice head of maybe an inch came up over the top but settled down quickly into just a thin film across the top. Decent side glass lacing as well.

The aroma deep with notes of coffee and cocoa, almost bittersweet with a light hoppiness undercutting the deeply roasted malts. Slight peat like aroma as it warmed up. The flavor started out a little off for the style with a health dose of smoked and roasted malts, not exactly at all what I was expecting out of it, but none the matter it was still very good. Rich notes of cocoa overlayed with a hint of dark bakers chocolate and an almost molasses like flavor swirling around in there as well. The finish though was coated with licorice like flavors and very wet, leaving you almost drooling, waiting for another sip to come through. Decent feel on this one, though if I am being honest, towards the end of the session it did start to feel a little bit flat on me, but maybe it was me.

Jason's bottle from mixed six-pack. Substantial roast, though weak for style. This is a dry stout with lots of oatmeal. Black with big off-white head. black with big off-white head and lots of lace. Lactose acidic. Medium mouthfeel. Drinkability so-so.

This pours a solid black brown, maybe a touch of rosey color with a decent light brown head and good lacing. The aroma is a moderate smokey malt and an edge of apple fruitiness. The flavor is smokey charcoal, roasted malt in a thin bodied fizzy concoction. Not very complex, a poor follow up to Old Heathen this night! This has an edgey quality that is not friendly to my tastes. Charcoal rules but it's not a good expression of this quality. Unfortunately this seems to be the case for most brews from Saranac. They make lots of interesting varieties but most disappoint. Not even that drinkable to me.

12 oz bottle poured into pint glass.

Pours a muddy brown body, nearly black. Light brown edges when held to the light. Creamy, pillowy tan head. Good size, good retention, nice looking. Leaves good amount of sticky lacing.

Brew smells of earthy, roasted barley. Malty. Whiffs of chocolate with a roasted coffee aroma. I'm also detecting what I think to be esters... kind of out of place.

Taste is overwhelmingly coffee. Dry, slightly bitter finish. Carbonation is very light. The roasted barley and malt smell isn't really translated into the taste at all. Very bland, to say the least.

The mouthfeel isn't very appealing. It's extremely "watery" and the aftertaste it's leaving isn't too pleasant. Old, stale coffee. It's drinkable, yes, but I wouldn't actively seek this brew out. I got it from a friend (along with a few other Saranac's) and I'm glad there's only one bottle of this in my possession. I would tire of it after the 12 ounces. It's not horrible, by any means, there's just a ton of far more superior oatmeal stouts out there.

Saranac Oatmeal Stout is an opaque, black-by-chocolate brown color with a light brown head that fades to a thin blotch and a bubbly ring. It has decent lacing. The aroma is dark, roasty and very sweet. The hops are just out of reach in the nose and seem piny. Coffee, chocolate and walnuts are implied here. Medium light in body. Sudsy with a tannic finish. The flavor starts off very weak and a bit like breakfast cereal. (diggum!) It swoops into bitterness-- juniper, french roast coffee and lemon peel are surrounded in a smoky ring of roast and a puddle of molasses. Looks, smells and tastes nice. Put some body in these beers, guys!
