I immediately thought this would be another dark wheat ale along the lines of Sam Adams Winter Lager. Nope!
A - Pours a dark amber with a one finger tan head that dissipates quickly.
S - Some roasted malts and hints of caramel but very subdued, not too much aroma.
T - Crisp and malty, with a slightly nutty/roasty aftertaste. Hints of fruit and a touch of hops. I get plenty of caramel lingering in the aftertaste. Reminds me of a Marzen, but with more subdued flavors. Spicy in the aftertaste as well.
M - Lightly bodied and lightly carbonated. Finishes dry.
D - Just the right amount of flavor to make it extremely sessionable and not too overpowering.
Not what I was expecting, more of a lighter Octoberfest (can't say I am familiar with the Vienna style lager before this one). Still, it is done well. Well balanced albeit a bit uninteresting, I tend to go for darker ales in the winter.
