Pours a golden color with decent carbonation. Aroma has faint hints of both banana and clove. Banana tends to stand out more. The flavor is quite smooth with more of a banana flavor showing through. Not quite as strong as Long Trail's version but it is quite decent. There's not much going on for aftertaste but I will rate this as decent for the style it's supposed to represent. The only thing I find lacking is the aftertaste but that is more of a personal preference.

Saranac have made a really nice Hefeweizen here. It has that nice Hefeweizen flavour along with some spiciness and banana esters. Hefeweizens aren't usually my favourite beers, but this is the best thing Saranac make.

A: Straw colour and a 5 mm head that fades quickly to sparse lacing. 3.5

S: Has that tangy grain smell you always get with a Hefe. Also, some spicy clove aroma. 4

T: Spicy clove highlights over a nice hefe base. Some banana-like esters in the aftertaste. Very nice. 4.5

M: Foamy. 4.5

O: This is a very nice Hefe. Well done Saranac. 4

Don't know why but I wasn't expecting much from this beer and was pleasantly surprised. Poured light straw with a bit of haze and a snow white head. Banana clove upfront much more prominent than some domestic hefes and a smooth, crisp mouthfeel. Some grain, spicy wheat and a hint of lemon make this really enjoyable. Wish I would of had this on a hot summer evening on the deck.

Poured into a pint glass in some hotel some years ago. Poured a somewhat pale golden color with white head and cloudy body. Smell is of bananas and clove with, of course, wheat, and the taste basically follows the smell. Mouthfeel is light, yet somewhat fizzy. This is a very drinkable beer and FX Matt needs to do a seasonal 6 and 12 pack of this.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Sam Adams pint glass

A- pours a slightly hazy deep yellow. Small white head that quickly disappates and leaves very little lacing.

S- wheaty, bananas, heavy spices and clove. Very pleasing

T- crisp and refreshing! Nicely balanced spices with some banana and yeast notes in the background. Excellent.

M- light carbonation. Medium body.

Overall an excellent hefeweizen. A tasty brew without a huge price tag. I just wish this variety pack had more than 2 of them so I could enjoy more. A must try

I was very impressed with this one. I don't like really astringent hefeweizens but the very mild ones like Widmers are not great either. This is a nicely balanced beer with the banana, cloves and astringency all prominently featured without being overpowering. Pours a cloudy golden color with a nice big head that quickly dissipates. The smell is very pleasant with the banana and cloves very apparent. The taste is very good, once again cloves, citrus and banana. Mouthfeel is nice and rich. For fans of this style, I'm sure there are much better examples but for this hop-head IPA lover, this is a good hefe. I just wish places like Bonefish, Atlas Diner and Red Robin had this one on tap vice Widmers.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on May 19, 2012. It begins with a golden-pale yellow pour with a quick fizzy head that settles to a session-long ring and good carbonation. On the nose there is a definite banana and clove ester, both of which overtake the more subtle wheat. The body is light and on the smooth side. The taste ramps up the banana and clove with an almost citrus tart appeal toward the end. Altogether a crisp finish. This was had at the end of a busy day of yard work on an 80-degree day and it felt perfect for the occasion.

12 oz. bottle with no freshness date. Brewed with winter wheat, 2-row malt, Tettnang, Mittelfruh, and German hefe yeast. It pours into the weizen glass a mildly-cloudy, toasted amber hue, with medium carbonation and an inch of medium-bubbled, tan head that leaves some nice lacing. Smells of banana pudding, lemon, nutty wheat, and hints of clove. The flavor is very much the same, with the addition of grassy/leafy/spicy hops that impart a mild bitterness, and some toasted wheat and malt that makes a nice addition. It has a light body with medium carbonation and a light and refreshing finish. Nice flavor and well-structured - one of the best from Saranac.

Can't say I've been overwhelmed with Saranac's beers as a group, but they hit the nail on the head with this one - spot on for the German style. Hazy and yeasty - nice nose and flavor of cloves and a bare hint of banana. Not too sweet, and finishes up clean and a touch sour.

Poured from 12oz. bottle into standard pint glass. "Best Before Sept. 2011" printed on bottle.
Cloudy, amber/orange in color, with two-inch whipped eggwhite head of foam. Nice looking brew.
Aroma-Subtle clove and banana notes.
Taste-Banana, clove, wheat. Very drinkable and refreshing. A nice warm weather quencher. Simple, refreshing, and affordable.

Saranac's Hefeweizen has a cloudy golden color with a thin foamy head. The aroma of banana is very strong. There is also a hint of spice and wheat in the aroma as well. Its flavor is mostly sweet with very little hop presence. There is a heavy dose of banana and lemon flavors along with a wheat malt base and some spicy clove. All of this is wrapped up in a medium body with a smooth texture and a mild carbonation. Another solid offering from Saranac.

Pours a cloudy yellow gold in color with a massive 2 finger white head that faded quickly and left decent spotty lacing.

Smells of banana, clove, yeast, wheat, caramel, brown sugar, grass, coriander and spices; a really nice smelling nose.

Tastes of banana, clove, yeast, wheat, caramel, grass, hay, brown sugar, flowers, lemon, coriander, orange peel, light cinnamon and spices like pepper or floral hops; nice hefeweizen taste that is spot on for the style with a nice blast of the classic yeast funk at the end.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, with light carbonation, a medium body and a chewy feel that trails off funky and goes down like water. A really nice enjoyable beer that I would have again, and a good American version of a German classic.

Pours a pretty, bubbly high foam head but this dissipates to a cap in a minute and a half or so. Also, the color is less brilliant than many hefes and the sediment seems outnumbered by the carbonation. The nose is proper for the style, athough a little faint.

Taste is broad and satisfying with the requisite banana clove lined with malt and less numerous hop tones. Mouthfeel is smooth and clean. Dry enough to keep the flavor and lock it down on your tongue.

Not an exceptional hefe but tasty and reasonably priced. I would rate this the highest of all the beers in the summerfest sampler 12 pack. It seems like they kind of made up some of the other beers a ("mountain ale"!) and made a leap of faith on others but it's tough to make a bad hefeweizen.

Single, 12 oz bottle purchased for $1.50 from Super Saver in Somerville... Originally part of a Summer gift-pack from Saranac...
"Unfiltered wheat ale" on the front logo sticker...
Pours a hazy, and cloudy, straw-colored hue with a minimal frothy and foamy head that quickly receded and left a fair amount of lacing around the head of the glass...
Smell was very on-point, extremely sweet and bursting with citrus and floral notes...
Bubblegum taste with noticeable coriander, wheat, citrus, florals, lemon, and candy essences...
Creamy, sweet mouthfeel - not as thick as I was hoping for, but still pretty good overall...
Easy drinkability for a Hefe, with a modest 5.6% ABV...
Overall, not a bad stab at a German style from an American brewery...
