Tasting # 6 of the summer 12-pack.

AP: Hazy-dazy orange hued golden color with good carbonation that creates a thin 1/8" head that dissiptes rather slowly for a thin head with a good cover.

nose: Wheat, grains, cloves and banana scented yeast upfront along with a mildly sweet scented red-berries underneath.

flavor: Over-ripe banana with wheat and spices and a very herbal and fruity edge that rides shot-gun. The yeastie, sour-fruit flavors dominate the after-taste and a wet-earth on a hot day hoppy finish.

Feel: Everything you'de expect in an American Hefe, light, crisp, clean and refreshing.

DA: good 'nough

Not overly impressed with this. It looks and smells the part of a hefe, but not a very good representation of the style. Could more appropriately be labeled an American Wheat. Pours with a nice head and some swirling effects from the bottle sediment. Surprisingly flat. Accompanied by the typical hefe notes of banana/clove, however not very well balanced. An odd oily mouthfeel. Semi-refreshing but I'd rather be drinking something else.

A: Into a weizen glass it poured a slightly hazy honey-golden body with a 1/2-finger bubbly white head. Some bubbles rise to refortify it, but there's no lacing left behind.

S: Cloves, bananas and bubble gum-sweetness. Heavy on the cloves.

T: Very light in general, but what's there is dominated by yeasty flavors -- mainly cloves and a hint of ripe banana. It finishes with a slightly metallic taste.

M: Light -- actually, it's thin -- in body. Moderately spritzy in feel.

D: Good. It's light, so it won't weigh you down. But I don't think there's enough going on to keep you interested. This beer is a good candidate for a lemon, in my opinion, to give it a little more flavor and to cut through the yeast and the sweetness.

Notes: I drank 3 different Hefes/Weizens this weekend: Harpoon's UFO, the Smuttynose Summer Weizen and this. Saranac's offering was clearly the low end of the 3. It wasn't bad, but it didn't impress me much.

My pour is a barely hazy amber color with a very tiny white head. No lace either. Aroma is wheaty orange with faint spicy things. Flavors are very light and hard to grasp. Mouthfeel is ok but nothing exciting. Body is mostly light and it turns out this is easy to drink at least. Especially when your thirsty. Nothing very special but worth reminding me to get better hefeweizens.

OK

Hazy dull gold - creamy head lacks the sturdiness of a true hefe-head. Light wheat aroma, dried fruit esters with a mildly phenolic edge. Flavor is a good amount of tangy wheat and sweet banana syrup. Not as "together" as the real deal, a little too bright, accented with sparkling carbonation a a super-crisp finish. I demand more yeast. Lightish.

Its not so bad, its just outclassed by so many others...

This beer came in the Saranac summer variety pack, and as one reviewer commented, they are starting to taste very similar, which isn't a good thing. This beer is a slightly cloudy, deep yellowish orange, with little head and very little lacing. The smell is very good, and it clearly is bananas, orange rind, and clove. The taste is mediocre but refreshing. You can taste the cloves, bananas, malt, some hoppiness towards the end, but this is also a bit watery, light bodied, sweet turning to tart towards the end, and not all that interesting. Ehh, that's about all I can say. I is certainly better than than the Bavarian White that is in the summer variety 12 pack which quickly washed down the drain. Unfortunately, I still have one more bottle of that to deal with. As for the Hefe in the variety pack, I will drink the other one, but with no real enthusiasm and no relish.

Pours hazy (not really the expected cloudy though) golden yellow with a thin white, lasting head. Virtually no lacing sticks to glass.

The smell is of wheat and banana. Pleasant enough, though nothing particularly special.

The taste is of banana/clove. Candy-like sweetness, wheat crispness.

Smooth, crisp, refreshing.

It's not on par with the tradition Bavarians of the style, though the influence (yeast strain) is certainly there, but one of the better American interpretations of the style and one of the better brews I've had from this brewery.
This says "winter release" but is part of the summer mixed pack. Especially enjoyable in the summer, though I could see having this year-round.

Pours a clear darkish golden with a decent head that dissipates quickly. Clear hefe? This would look nice if it weren't a hefe

S-no phenol smells here like you would expect. Crisp and wheatlike though

T-very light banana and a clove. Really a crisp wheat with german hops

M-lighter body decent carbonation

D-not a hefe. Maybe an american wheat but this is not a hefe. If it weren't called this I'd probably like it better. All of the beers in this variety pack really taste similar.

Pours a golden color with decent carbonation. Aroma has faint hints of both banana and clove. Banana tends to stand out more. The flavor is quite smooth with more of a banana flavor showing through. Not quite as strong as Long Trail's version but it is quite decent. There's not much going on for aftertaste but I will rate this as decent for the style it's supposed to represent. The only thing I find lacking is the aftertaste but that is more of a personal preference.

This is a cloudy gold colored beer with a smallish white head for the style. Color is too dark for the style.

Neutral scent malt wise with just a little whet malt. Ester wise this smells like and honest Hefe, mainly this smells of clove and medicine. Banana and spice scent is present but is combined into a banana ice cream scent.

The taste begins neutral and spicy. Not much sweetness here this is quite phenolic and mainly medicine and then clove in taste. Banana taste is mostly in the aftertaste here and there is a mildly strong hop bitterness. Definitely a dry and medicine tasting Hefe Weizen.

The mouthfeel is OK.

This is more of a slap in the face of taste than an easy drinking wheat beer. One is enough of this.

This may not be my favorite beer in the style but to my surprise Matt Brewing did pretty well at making the Summer Variety pack extremely drinkable. This beer is right up there with the drinkability, though it lacks the flare that the best Wheat beers have.

Appearance: Pours a golden rod orange color. A careful decant leaves any potential yeasties in the bottle. The body is clear. A second pours seems to show there would have been little to know difference had I poured all in one. The head is two to three fingers in my Weizen glass. A little swirl creates nice sheets of droopy lacing that soon slide back into the body of the beer.

Smell: The aroma is too reserved but with a lot of searching I found fruit esters and a hint of banana and spices.

Taste: Sweet grain and wheat malt front with fruitiness that grows across the palate. Wheat beers run the risk of a thin center but this beer actually holds together quite well; beginning middle and end. The finish is more banana and cloves with a dry fruity aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Decent carbonation. Clean crisp finish. Light but creamy across the tongue.

Drinkability: The best thing the beer has to offer is the very easy drinking.

Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!

Pours a slightly hazy golden color with an average off-white head. Nothing fantastic, sub par for a hefe. The smell has a distinct clove, bubblegum smell, not bad. The taste is a little watery for a hefe but has the characteristics of a hefe. The taste is of clove, wheat malt, and some sour apple. The feel is a bit too crisp and watery for a hefe. This is a pretty good Saranac offering. It has a good aroma and taste and is easily drinkable.

From bottle to glass, we get a nice dense white head and good carbonation. The beer is a light golden color. Left the beer for a quick phone call and noticed excellent head retention when I came back.

A strong clove scent here, enjoyable. The taste is of malts and clove, but it's watery / flat.

Not a lot of bite in this hefeweisen, it's a pretty smooth drink. I like a little crisp kick in my hefeweisen though. Pretty average brew.

This one pours a light hazy orange with a frothy white head that faded quickly. The smell is mostly of the banana and cloves as advertised on the bottle with some sweet notes and a healthy dose of the wheaty/bready smell expected from a hefe. The taste starts out suble and sweet, with the wheat up front followed strongly by the banana and a kick of the spice at the end with a banana aftertaste. A decent mouthfeel with a good and interesting balance in flavor, and decent carbonation. This one is refreshing and a good quality hefe with a dominant yet not offensive flavor. Definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of the style. Cheers!

Poured to a hazy golden yellow with floating yeast and medium off-white head that dissipated quickly and left no lacing. Aroma was slightly bready, but almost non-existent, and the mouthfeel slightly chewy. The pleasant surprise (and only redeeming quality) of this beer was the flavor, which was alomost like a banana popsicle. At first I thought I imagined it, but every taste was the same.

Unfortuantely, the finish was short and slightly metallic, so the joy of the flavor quickly left. All and all, an okay beer.

This beer is from the "12 Beers of Summer" pack. The beer pours an amber/orange/yellow color with an inch white head which went away quickly. It smells like bananas, cloves, bubblegum and wheat. The taste is the same as it smells, except the clove/spicy taste comes out more with a sweet aftertaste. Mouthfeel is light with a good amount of carbonation. Drinkability is good, it's smooth and refreshing. I think this is an OK beer, not the best hefe out there, but not bad either. I'd drink it again.

From the 12 Brews of Summer.

A: The ale is a clear orange, looking for like a kristall than a hefe. The head is a small white ring atop the glass.

S: The nose is bubblegum and clove, must stronger than I was expecting based on the color (I was expecting a pale wheat ale).

T: The bubblegum and clove that are evident in the nose follow in to the taste. The clove flavors are soft and almost minty. Only after the sip is swallowed does some faint banana sweetness emerge. Despite coming to the party late, the flavors linger long after the sip is gone.

M: The mouthfeel is quite robust, this is a decent approximation of the style. The clove and banana really come out, giving the palate a lot to enjoy.

D: The moderate abv and sweet flavor make this a good beer to enjoy on a hot day, it'll fill you up without knocking you out.

A- Thin white head on a cloudy orange body with yellow hues.
S- Big banana, clove, bubble gum aroma. A lot of wheat comes through and get a nice bread aroma too.
T- The taste follows the aroma. You get some grass/wheaty hops in there too though and they leave a light bitterness on the tongue. A power wheat flavors comes off the tongue also. It is almost like you can taste cheaper ingredients.
M-Thin/medium body with medium carbonation. Almost a powder feel to it too.
D- It's not bad but I wouldn't want another. There are a lot better hefe's out there and easier to get than this.

Part of the "12 Beers of Summer" mix pack

Hazy orange/yellow color, with a small head (and I swirlled it) that dissappeared completely in 2 minutes, no lace.

Aroma is banana, wheat bread, and slight colve.

Taste is same as smell, with a touch of hop on the finish

Mouthfeel is nothing special, light body, mild carbonation, no aftertaste.

Since it's so light, I gave drinkability the highest score, not for the hefe connoisseur, but good for a hefe novice.

This brew poured to a somewhat cloudy gold color with some highlights of orange mixed in. I was surprised that is was as clear as it was but I suppose that might be from filtration? Had a nice sized slightly off white head that has some legs and left a little lacing. The aroma is quite surprising as it has the aromas of a solid hefe as I was not sure what to expect. Noticeable first seem to be the banana smell which mixes quite nicely with the wheat backbone, clove is not being picked up by my nose. The taste is quite nice actually, seems to have a refreshing quality to it! The banana taste is noticeable up front mixed in with some additional citrus fruit like scents. Also the wheat flavor is quite nice giving it a spiciness even though it seems quite refined in the background. Overall this is a nice rendition of a Hefe by FX Matts (Saranac), possibly one of their better brews and a good one for the summer.

A – Pours a creamy three-finger head, cloudy yellow-orange body at the top, a crisp kristal yellow by the bottom.

S – Sweet malty, banana, little floral presence.

T – Fairly noticeable banana cream, little bit of malts and a slight bitter, hoppy aftertaste.

M – Surprisingly watery for the body; slightly carbonated with a light, watery finish.

D – Apparently, like many of Saranac’s seasonals, this is a solid but nevertheless middle-of-the-road rendition on a popular style. My major complaint is with the mouthfeel, the watery texture really detracts from its drinkability in my book. In the end, there’s not much that separates this from the rest of the pack.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is heavy with banana, there’s a little bit of wheat and not much of anything else.

T: The taste starts out with a banana sweetness but it’s not as strong as it is in the smell. The sweetness quickly fades into a bready wheat flavor. The hops presence is very mild and the malt character is very thin. The after-taste is bready and slightly sweet.

M: Smooth with a little bit of crispness, medium body, light-to-medium carbonation, clean finish.

D: Not very tasty, goes down ok, not very filling, there are definitely much better beers within the style that I would choose over this one.

Two bottles poured into a 24 oz weizen glass. Standard hefe look, not much head. Orangish hazy gold.

Aroma of sweet wheaty malt. Some slight spices come through.

A quite traditional hefe. Banana and clove, with nothing out of the ordinary. A nice nutty wheat sweetness.

Excellent drinkability comes with the territory in a hefe, and this one does not disapoint.

Bottle:

Poured a orange-gold lightly hazed ale in the glass. Small 1 finger cap. ..a poor looking hefe.

The nose made up for the bad looks: Light understated aromas of clove and some bubble gum, light mustiness

Taste was the vindication for such a poor looking Hefe...sweet, bready and dry up front... light peppering of the tongue from carbonation, a timely appearance of heffe banana-spice and bubble gum tones mid palate, then a fast drop off for a clean dry finish with no after tastes...weird but OK for a commercial Hefe and I have tasted much worse from Germany.

Would be on-par with Hacker-Pschorr HW if it were not for the weak heading this beer displays.
