A hint of whitish head doesn't lace as the lazy carbonation floats through pale orange haze...

Some sweet citrus in the nose, also wet wheat and cloves

Oranges, here, some vitamin C chews and heavy wheat. Love the malts. At first sip it truly makes a good impression on me.

Light bodied, and thin which is made up for by the tickling amount of carbonation.

Over all a very refreshing beer, would quench my thirst on a hot day really well

The last of Saranac's Summer Mix that I finally got around to trying

A-Cloudy orange, not much head which leaves rather quickly. The appearance got me scared but file this one under "Don't judge a book by its cover"

S-Wheat, lemon and orange.

T-A Lot of wheat. The malt bill hits you up top the head, what I like to see in a hefe. Also some lemon and orange flavors sneak in just enough to provide some balance.

M-Light but with no carbonation, disappointed here.

O-A decent hefe, I know Saranac doesn't consistently make the same beers but this should be in the Summer Mix every year.

Poured from a bottle into tulip glass.

A: Pours a nice head that quickly disappears. Nice hazy orange/yellow color

S First impression WOW. Very fragrant and fresh. Slight hint of citrus

T: Balanced & fresh Notes of citrus & spice. Lot's of flavor

M: Crisp balanced & smooth Light carbonation

O: Very drinkable. Very flavorful. Best beer of the 6 showcased in the Saranac Summer 12 pack

I wish it were available itself without having to buy the other 5 beers. The other five are all good, but not nearly as enjoyable as this Hefeweizen

Another from the Saranac summer 12 pack.

A cloudy orange color.

Tastes of wheat. Yeasty, with some spice. Clove and banana come through.

Hefeweizen is not my favorite style, so it is hard for me to get excited about this.

Overall, it is a good beer, and a good example of the style.

Saranac have made a really nice Hefeweizen here. It has that nice Hefeweizen flavour along with some spiciness and banana esters. Hefeweizens aren't usually my favourite beers, but this is the best thing Saranac make.

A: Straw colour and a 5 mm head that fades quickly to sparse lacing. 3.5

S: Has that tangy grain smell you always get with a Hefe. Also, some spicy clove aroma. 4

T: Spicy clove highlights over a nice hefe base. Some banana-like esters in the aftertaste. Very nice. 4.5

M: Foamy. 4.5

O: This is a very nice Hefe. Well done Saranac. 4

reviewed on 6/10/11 - from notes:

A: hazy orange with carbonation that can be seen. white head doesn’t have very good retention and quickly moves to just a film.

S: clove, slight banana. definitely a definitive wheat. coconut water?

T: malt chewiness. clove and black pepper. a nip of alcohol and apple.

M: a soft taffy like mouthfeel.

D: not a bad example, but there are definitely better ones out there. Saranac is really cranking out a lot of different styles so you cant have them all perfect.

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass. Hazy orange/yellow with a thin white head that eventual fades into a thin ring.

The first thing I said when I went in for a sniff was "wow." I was really surprised by this beer. The aroma was pretty spot on. Loads of banana and clove, some sweet grainy wheat characteristics, and faint grassy hops. The flavor highlights the banana / clove characters more than anything else. Well carbonated, bubbly and rather light body. Very crisp and refreshing.

Overall, I was impressed with this beer. The other Saranac offerings have been mediocre, for the most part. However, this "Summer 12 pack" at just $13.99 is a steal. Really enjoyed this one by Saranac.

A nice, tall head billows up on the pour and settles on a mildly clouded yellow-gold brew. It ends up a pure white and lasts the rest of the way about half a finger high with a rocky denseness.
The aroma is wheat, lemon, yeast and a kiss of hops. A bit of clove is here but very lightly with very little banana notes to speak of. The yeast, though evident, doesn't impart that true character in the strength it should.
The flavor strikes me as almost more half hefeweizen / half APWA. There's definitely a good, strong wheat base with a good hops and malts balance and plenty of the yeast character. Lemon is actually prevalent as a flavor in this beer aside from the wheat. It's not as sweet or soft as some, having more of a citrus / lemon zest. Again, banana and clove aren't particularly evident here.
This beer does have very much the right feel for the style. The body is light but with plenty of depth. This is very crisp and refreshing without sacrificing smooth, blending into a creamy finish.

bottle poured into a weizen glass

a: light straw yellow, 1/2" head that quickly reduces to a lacing cap. Like the rest of Matt FX's beers I have had, it has a boat load of carbonation.

s: tart wheat scent, slight clove. slightly more fragrent than the usual from Saranac

t: sweet when it hits the tounge, it becomes balanced with clove and slight flower pedals.

m: Medium bodied, I like my weizens to be a bit lighter in the mouth.

O: not a bad beer, it does feel a bit restraigned though.

Pours a cloudy yellow gold in color with a massive 2 finger white head that faded quickly and left decent spotty lacing.

Smells of banana, clove, yeast, wheat, caramel, brown sugar, grass, coriander and spices; a really nice smelling nose.

Tastes of banana, clove, yeast, wheat, caramel, grass, hay, brown sugar, flowers, lemon, coriander, orange peel, light cinnamon and spices like pepper or floral hops; nice hefeweizen taste that is spot on for the style with a nice blast of the classic yeast funk at the end.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, with light carbonation, a medium body and a chewy feel that trails off funky and goes down like water. A really nice enjoyable beer that I would have again, and a good American version of a German classic.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Bottle reads "Best before 9/30/11."

A - Pours a hazy orange-gold with a two finger head that subsides quickly. I really should have poured this into a weizen but I decided impromptu to review. Small amounts of lacing follow the beer down the glass.

S - Banana, clove and some wheaty scents. Not overly strong on the nose.

T - Delicious wheaty sweetness is accompanied by banana and clove flavors. A slight bit of lemon crawls into the back end. Very tasty.

M - Nice and crisp with a flavorful light-medium body.

O - American breweries try and try to replicate the wonderous German hefe, a difficult task that only a few can accomplish. I won't say that Saranac's version is up there with those legendary beers because its not. But for an American take, it gets the job done. Very tasty and enjoyable; this is a brew I could have throughout the year.

A - Pours a very hazy orange amber with a thick rocky white head that gives way to little lacing.

S - Sweet wheat malts with loads of banana and clove.

T - Banana and clove, all day. The flavors could be seen as too powerful to some fans of the style. However, wheat provides a strong enough presence throughout to keep this beer sweet and fruit-rich but still manageable. Slightly more bready malts in the finish.

M - Medium with just the right amount of carbonation.

O - A strong Hefe; a little sweet but I like mine more in that direction.

Poured from 12oz. bottle into standard pint glass. "Best Before Sept. 2011" printed on bottle.
Cloudy, amber/orange in color, with two-inch whipped eggwhite head of foam. Nice looking brew.
Aroma-Subtle clove and banana notes.
Taste-Banana, clove, wheat. Very drinkable and refreshing. A nice warm weather quencher. Simple, refreshing, and affordable.

Appearance-Cloudy, Orange, and Golden. Gorgeous.

Smell-I get a little banana and maybe some bubblegum.

Taste-I thought cloves and bananas were a weird combination, but that’s exactly what I taste and I like it.

Mouthfeel: Light and fizzy.

Overall: I really like this beer. I haven’t had too many Hefeweizens and this is my favorite so far. I’m definitely looking forward to trying more. Hopefully Saranac will sell this in 6-packs because I’d buy it again.

Poured into a pint glass in some hotel some years ago. Poured a somewhat pale golden color with white head and cloudy body. Smell is of bananas and clove with, of course, wheat, and the taste basically follows the smell. Mouthfeel is light, yet somewhat fizzy. This is a very drinkable beer and FX Matt needs to do a seasonal 6 and 12 pack of this.

Dark yellow color with thick foam head and a moderate amount of prickle. The nose is very mild, but has the expected banana and other "yeasty" smells floating off. The attack is clean and easy with a fruity flavor and a dry finish. The mouthfeel is nice and creamy and enjoyable in the mouth. The finish dries a little bit and is quite a contrast to the mouthfeel. That is the most interesting thing about the beer to me. . . the juxtaposition of the creamy mouthfeel to the dry finish. Its okay, but there are other hefeweizens that I prefer.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Poured a dark golden yellow with a white foam.

Smell and taste were what you'd expect from a hefe - very strong on the banana side, with a smooth wheaty taste. Some citrus buried in there. Good buzz in the mouthfeel.

Not the best hefe out there, but a good addition to the variety pack.

A 12 ounce bottle poured into my Harpoon weizen glass. Appears a cloudy pale straw color with about two fingers of bone white head. The head lingers for just about the entire glass, fading to about a third of it's original size. Smells and tastes of citrus such as lemon, typical banana and clove notes, a touch of spicy yeast, followed by a subtle sweetness with a wheat flavor from start to finish. Crisp, refreshing and medium bodied with ample carbonation for a hefe. No too bad, especially for the price.

A - poured cloudy honey with a 1/4" head that disappeared quickly

S - nuts, yeast, banana, mild hops, wheat

T - very similar to the smell, nutty, citrus and bananas were more pronounced, light tanginess, mixes with wheat and pale malts. Fresh hoppiness but very light in that respect

M - light bodied, medium carbonation, slightly dry finish

D - quite drinkable, thirst quenching

Overall - An ok wheat ale, the banana notes were pronounced but pleasant. This would make a decent session beer but I've had better wheat beers.

Saranac Hefeweizen is a hazy golden ale with a thin white head. The aroma is of banana, clove, raisin, dried mango and a touch of wheat. It is light and crisp on the tongue but... not watery! The flavor is slightly bitter and a little funky. Not bad at all.

Smells very good, floral and banana. Looks hazy yellow like a good hefe should. I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. Tastes very floral, banana, citrusy. I was pleasantly surprised by this brew, it doesn't compete with hefeweizens like Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr, Franziskaner, but it's far better than Sam Adams' effort. Check it out.

Bought as part of the Saranac 12 Beers of Summer mix pack ($11.99/12)

Typical, run of the miill Hefe. At this point, still have yet to find a Hefe I can truly say I enjoyed drinking. Had the banana and clove aroma and taste but the body is just way too think and the lack of carbonation makes it tough to drink. Not something I would try again.

Pours a darker brown (too dark?) gently effervescent body with a quickly thinning soft white head... banana, clove and citrus as expected--little else to quantify... smooth, a bit active at the back teeth--medium-bodied and substantial--a surprising approximation of the style, with a lingering aftertaste to boot... the beer rewards with clove and banana shaking the wheat's hands on the exhale... abit sweet, and drier than expected... I must admit, for the Saranac swings and misses I've had, this stood up when I conducted a showdown between this and Paulaner's hefe--and I've enjoyed Paulaner's offering for years now... nicely attempted, Saranac...a good player in the summer mix pack...

Certainly not the greatest wheat/hefe I've had. Cloudy yellow colored topped with just a small white head. Aroma is pretty strong bananas. Flavor is wheaty and bananas along with some spice and sour notes. Overall it's pretty weak though. Just not enough going on to excite me. No reason for me to seek this one out again with so many other better sun beers around.
