A: A medium-light copper with good clarity. Produces a good head stand with persistent, off-white bubbles.
S: This is a middle of road aroma for an American IPA, not great but not bad. A moderate piney hops aroma with a bit of citrus and a somewhat grassy note. The malt has a light sweetness with a slight caramel note. There is the a bit of the ale yeast fruitiness.
T: The malt sweetness is kind of up with the moderate hops bitterness coming along the back. There is a moderate citrus hops flavor. The balance is somewhat bitter. There is a light alcohol sweetness and a touch of fruitiness. The finish is off-dry and the aftertaste is of a somewhat lingering bitterness.
M: A medium bodied with moderately-strong carbonation.
O: I'll scored this as an American Red, but I wouldn't have scored the flavor too high is it was listed as an IPA. I want a more aggressive hops bitterness in an IPA.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
Appearance: The pour produced a tall light tan head over an amber colored body with great clarity and some nice visible carbonation.
Smell: There are nice juicy citrus hops and some lighter sweet malty notes jumping right out of the glass.
Taste / Palate: Mild hop notes and sweet bready maltiness mix up front with hop flavor and bitterness building up on the back end. It’s middle has just a touch of caramel and toffee sweetness. The palate is classic Saranac medium body and average easy drinking feel with balances carbonation.

Impressive 63 IBU Red IPA from Saranace, deep ruby tinted copper hue with an off white biscuit malt head, their beers look delicious...they have some great technical brewing skills let's see how the other senses perceive this beer. The nose is pine needles, citrus, and alpha acids derived from the hop pellets, a bit of caramelized sugars accented in there as well. Where this and other hoppy IPAs from Saranac take a dive is lack of hop and malt balance. Hits with hints of caramel fades into a bitter sickeningly dry finish with citrus pith and highly acidic pine needle hop pellet induced hop flavor/bitterness. Mouthfeel is just lingering hop bitterness from the lack of balance of the malt and hop, it's an atrocious mess of an IPA. Overall Saranac needs to go get some lessons on the west coast for proper IPA brewing/fermentation lessons.

Oddly enough, this is one of the best-looking beers I've ever seen. Say what you will about the overall flavor or the substance, apparently there's plenty of malt in here and enough hop oils to contribute to a rich head. Speaking of, it rises to about two fingers atop a thick red-orange brew. The true beauty is that it barely settles and never fades, insisting on remaining until the beer is gone; not just a wispy foam, either, almost a full finger after it's diminished. A thick, consistent sheet of lacing curtains the glass all the way to the bottom. How? I don't know, but this is what my eyes are seeing.
So it makes little sense that this IPA isn't particularly strong. In fact, it's a bit strange. The fact is, only American varietals of malts and hops are used here. The combination of them, however, seems to work out to make for a beer that seems more British than American. There's a show of pine, though light, and possibly just a ghost of citrus, but most of what I get is a bit musty, downright herbal, and leafy, with a much earthier note than American hops employ. There's also a metallic note throughout.
The feel is good, mingling a brisk crispness that doesn't fade with a good smoothness underneath, ample but not overstated carbonation making for good drinking of an adequately medium-bodied brew.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip.
A: Rigorous pour for the hell of it yields a great 3 finger off white head. This sits overtop a clear ruby red body. A decent amount of carbonation. Leaves some good lacing.
S: A blend of piney hops and a spicy hops with a solid malt backbone. A bit of soapiness to it and a hint of metal. Malts provide some carmel tones.
T: I can see the whole cone hop approach to emulate some of the better west coast IPAs but it falls just a little short. The hops provide a good bitterness but lack a bit in flavor. The sweetness of the malt does come through as they had planned and it does compliment.
M: Medium body with a good amount of carbonation. Mostly clean finish, pretty easy drinking.
Overall not a bad brew but nothing noteworthy either. Saranac tends to have a somewhat carmely taste to me and they incorporate that into this style nicely.

A - dark amber with a big, frothy, off white white head that has decent retention
S - faint birthday cake sweetness, some caramel, faint citrusy aromas
T - caramel, very faint birthday cake sweetness, mild bitterness, some pine, light citrusy notes
M - medium bodied, well carbonated, a bit crisp
If this were full flavored it would be a great attempt at a west coast IPA as the bottle suggests. It is a nice attempt, but the flavor is watered down. All the right notes are there, but it doesn't impress. It's worth a try, but ultimately there are better.

Saranac Red IPA
12 oz. brown bottle, code "BB JUN 30, 2014 3503 1047"
Appearance: Wow, it has protein floating in it. It appears to be permanent chill haze. If I move the glass back and forth the proteins move with it, and if I spin the glass and then stop it, they'll keep going in the direction I've sent them in. I don't care, clarity isn't necessary in a hoppy beer in my opinion, it's just that I've never seen that from a Saranac beer. I doesn't even say it's dry-hopped. Maybe it's not. (Ahh, I checked another bottle and it's just the sediment stirred up and held in suspension by the malt). Moving forward, it's still moderately clear, and it's got a beautiful ruby-accented dark copper body. The head is a creamy yellowed beige, and it holds fairly well but should be better. The lacing is better just slightly better than average as well.
Smell: Hoppy. Bright and fresh. It's slightly citrusy, but not overly so, and a bit candyish... slightly grape-ish maybe. It must be the hops. I'm not familiar with Calypso or Palisade hops, but I do get a whiff of piney-ness from the Chinook. Oddly, those hops aren't even listed on the bottle I have. There's some apricot to it as well, and - a very nice bit of very lightly sweet dark caramel.
Taste: As is quite often the case, the flavor basically mirrors the aroma. The malt is fuller, and the hops are intertwined in it. I don't find anything candyish or grape-like upfront, but I do get it in the burp! Odd. It's an interesting addition to the other flavors of pear, apple, apricot, and gently resinous pine. It's really nicely balanced, and I don't really get the whole effect of the 63 IBU's of bitterness until the finish where it lingers. Either the alcohol of the hops add a bit of spiciness to it, and it's quite dry. Surprisingly, most of the malt and hop flavors fade pretty readily.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Moderately carbonated. Delicately crisp and then smooth... I think it could use a little more bite myself, although I guess that would change the balance by accentuating the bitterness a bit.
Overall: An interesting beer, and one that's surprisingly drinkable, but also with a bit of complexity to it.

Pours a clear light amber, light brown color with a small wispy beige head that settled into a sparse cap. Expected the beer to be a tad more red in color.
The aroma is of steely caramel malts, tin, and some light grassy hops. Not very aromatic for an IPA. Perhaps a touch of citrus or tropical fruit if you try hard enough.
The taste is light but does have a nice hoppy flavor. A touch of orange and grapefruit and a hint of pine and grass. The malt doesn't do too much. It provides a metallic flavor and light caramel. Some tea flavors.
The feel is light and crisp. Good balance between sweet and bitter. Finishes just slightly bitter and dry on the palate. Refreshing.
An ok hoppy amber. The amber malt is fairly tame and the hops provide decent flavor. Drinks very easy.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.
Pours deep reddish amber with light white foam. Deep caramel nose, hint of cherry. Taste is a malty sweet caramel with a firm bitter hop. Really well blended. Balances the hop and amber sweetness really well. Reviews on this were down, but I really liked it.

A-pours a dark amber color with ruby hues, creamy and frothy off-white head with great retention long after the pour
S- grassy hops with some citrus rind, some spicy notes, toasted bread with a bit of caramel malt
T- grassy and citrus hops are followed by an odd lemon-like tartness, reminiscent of a shandy. Mid-palate provides a bit if sweet caramel malt, but not much if a presence. The finish is dry, bitter and tart. The tartness just seems to throw off the balance.
M- medium body with moderate carbonation, mouthfeel is just a bit creamy with a smooth finish
O-I had high hopes after the pour and smell, but the taste was just all over the place. For the style, it was lacking a malty backbone. Not one I would seek out again.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has an auburn color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell has some hops, a bit of sweetness to it. Taste is hoppy up front, malts kicking in at the finish. Well balanced and easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.
