A: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Body is black with a thin khaki-colored head on top. Some splotches of lace on the glass.

S: Good Porter nose - roast, cocoa powder, charcoal. Overall impression of roastiness.

T: First impression on the palate is more about the mouthfeel than the taste: it's thin in feel and a bit overcarbonated. Flavor-wise, it pretty much follows the nose, which is a good thing. I get roasted barley malt, some burnt charcoal, mild cocoa powder and a bitter astringency at the finish that at times seems almost sour. Roasted coffee beans show up after awhile too.

M: See notes above - thin and too-active carbonation. The feel really detracts from the overall impression.

O: If you break down the categories individually, this beer wouldn't be so bad. But the thin weight and sharp carbonation really take away from the overall experience.

12 ounce bottle with a best before date of March 31, 2014, one of my friends gave this to me last week. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown with an inch tan head. Head retention is good, and there's a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like milk and bittersweet chocolate, roasted malt, char, and some coffee. I think the taste is just like the aroma, but the roasty/char flavor is the strongest. Mouthfeel/body is light, it seems thin for a porter. With that being said, it is pretty easy to drink. Overall I liked this brew, it's a good roasty porter that hopefully I'll get to try fresher sometime.

Best before 3/31/14.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and char aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and char flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with solid cocoa and char aspects all around.

Appearance: Cola. Minimal tan lace remains.
Smell: Roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate.
Taste: Coffee and chocolate.

This is a decent brew. Quite malty, and a bit bitter. Coffee and chocolate are the main themes with both the smell and the taste. I wouldn't get it again unless it was with a sampler.

Pours from the bottle with a rich, opaque, dark-chocolate brown color, with a sufficient foamy, sand-colored head. The aroma presents milk chocolate, some oaty grains, and a little bit of vanilla. In contrast, however, the flavor is the liquid equivalent to burnt toast, with a grainy, assertive bitterness. There is also some of the chocolate from the aroma (albeit not as pronounced), but there is not enough to counter the over-roasted bitter character. The texture helps, with a medium body and fine but soft carbonation. In the end, though, even if the goal was to make a smack-you-in-the-face robust porter, there is just too much of the over-roasted character to be enjoyable.
