A good beer for winter (well, it is a porter after all, right? :-p). Though it is not my favorite porter, it is still a very good one. The head fades faster than I would like to see in a porter, but this may be a function of my having only ever had it from a bottle. As with all decent beers that I have only had from the bottle, I would very much like to try this one on tap. Texture-wise it is a little thin (less viscous) compared to other porters, such as Otter Creek's Stovepipe Porter, yet it leaves a lingering taste and texture in the mouth after being swallowed. The taste is good, bordering on great: it is not as smokey as I would like a porter to be, but it is slightly more bitter, which gives it a unique flavor. Definitely worth a try.

Appearance: Deep dark caramel color, like a good strong cup of black coffee. Decent foam and lacing.
Smell: Chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts.
Taste: Coffee, roasted malts, smoke, and bitter chocolate.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and dry, with a slight bitter aftertaste.
The Verdict: I like it. Just enough complexity to keep the tongue happy. Surprisingly good porter.

From Saranac assorted holiday gift pack
Bottle into wine glass...fancy on Christmas!
A- Beautiful dark brown with a bit of a ruby hue where the light shines through near the bottom. A nice powdered cocoa color head, light but nice color and fluffy.
S- The chocolate smell is dominant over the roasted scents and there is a hint of fruits a small dash of hops and another smell that reminds me of Belgian yeast.
T- Tastes of roasted malts. All flavors are quite subdued and nothing really stands out. I let this warm up and nothing really comes out. Quite bland. Not bad, just not interesting.
M- Mouthfeel is a bit thin for a porter. I was expecting some more smooth, rich creamy textures, but it also fell short on this category.
O- Overall, this may just be the best out of the other five in the assorted holiday gift pack (no, I am not a fan of their flagship pale ale. One of my first craft beers and one that I revisit at least once a year, but it never gets better for me). It's simply very plain and uninteresting. There certainly aren't any characteristics that are memorable.
