I didn't know what to expect with this one as Saranac and I have a love/hate relationship. Luckily, however, this time it was love (sorta). The beer poured a dark ruby brown, almost black with a relatively small dark tan head (just smaller than a finger, perhaps because I didn't pour fast enough or it was too cold).
I could immediately smell the caramel sweetness, though that was mixed with a slight roasted coffee scent as well.
The taste is where this beer succeeds. The caramel sweetness hits you right away up front, but that subsides as the roasted coffee bitterness comes in. The caramel flavors die off about halfway through the glass, giving way to the roasted malt and coffee bitterness, mixed in with a slight hops bitterness to round it off.
The mouthfeel is the part where this beer could use some work. It's too thin, though not thin enough to make it undrinkable. This is a very drinkable beer and I could easily see myself drinking several of these in a night. It was very enjoyable. I had it right before dessert (which happened to be baked apples with which the beer paired nicely).

This is really good...
I found this to be a very sweet smelling brew - true to its caramel porter title. The look was a very appealing reddish-copper hue, with a mouthfeel that was lightly creamy and light-bodied as well. Overall, a great brew to enjoy during the holidays, and now the winter ahead...

Pours murky, reddish brown in color with one quarter inch head. Taste is leather and light caramel. Light bodied, moderate carbonation, sweet. I want more caramel. Tastes like porter with dollar store caramel. Saranac makes way better...m'eh beer...one is enough.

I don't know if caramel in a porter was a good idea. I picked this up in a "make your own 6-pack" at a store. The look is OK and dark brown like a porter should be, the smell wasn't too bad but the taste was not that enjoyable (& like porters including other flavored ones).

11/21/2020 Pies and Pints in Morgantown, WV. Beautiful color! Deep copper color..... At this point our review of nicities ends. I think it tastes like melted butterscotch hard candy on cough syrup. Calling this a porter is a travesty..... Yes, bartender, take this away....
