Picked up this beer in Paris early 2011. Best before 2012 stamp. Label has a Medaille D’Argent from Paris 2010. ABV 7.5

Appearance: Hazy reddish brown. Poured a thick offwhite head. Cork popped with great carbonation.

Smell: Malty, nutty, slight sweet brown sugar/toffee.

Taste: Malty toffee with citrusy notes and a moderately bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Light mouthfeel

Overall: A fine refreshing beer, lovely sweet aftertaste. Would happily drink again.

Appearance: Pours a clear burnt orange with couple of inches of foam on top; streaks of lace are left behind

Smell: Toffee, fig, toasted bread and yeast

Taste: Toffee, fig and toasted bread, up front, with a hint of earthy bitterness and yeast flavor in the middle; the sweetness recedes a bit, after the swallow, though it lingers right through the finish and returns to dominate the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A bit too sweet and lacking complexity though this is still a very nice beer; a year and a half past the "best by" date may have something to do with the lack of balance

This was such a neat beer to be able to try. I sampled this on the back of a bus traveling from Fontainbleau, France to Dijon, France. I bought the beer at a small wine shop in central Fontainbleau and even got a free glass with the brew. Courpalay, where the beer is brewed, is a small village Northeast of Fontainbleau.


Nose is distant, but showcases faint notes of brown sugar, cherries, strawberries and plums.

There is a dryness throughout the entire palate with lovely notes of cherries, oak, peppers, grapes and plums. Simply fantastic.

In trade from Simon at Cave a Bulles in Paris

A: slightly hazy, copper color, lots of bubble trains. Variable head on the pours, from none to a solid one finger, might be due to suboptimal glassware.

S: Slightly sweet malt and candy aromas. A bit of fig. Maybe I'm imagining this, but I seem to be picking up just a hint of the namesake cheese when I swirl it a bit.

T: lots of biscuit malt, with a slight fruity sweetness.

M: highly carbonated. Medium-light body. Finishes with a pleasant, mild, grainy linger.

O: Nicely drinkable beer. This was suggested to me as a Biere de Garde, and it does seem more in that style to me than Belgian Dark Ale. From the fruity notes, I might have suspected use of candi sugar, although the ingredient list says it's all grain (interesting aside: in France it seems beers must have a complete ingredient list like any other food or beverage). I'm not sure I would seek it out again over the many other new beers I could try here, but I'm happy with the recommendation.
