Named after the largest living tree on earth, poured into a standard pint glass a light clear golden with a huge blooming white leaving broken rings of lace behind as it settled very slowly.English hop aromas to me and somewhat mild at that, floral and leafy with a big firm toasty lightly sweet malt base.English themes on the palate as well leafy with a hint of mint with only a mild citric quality and borderline medicinal, that big toasty malt base stands up to the hop keeping it even keeled thru out.Not a big left coast hop bomb like I was expecting but its honestly not bad.

Picked up while in Visalia for a wedding. Kinda pricey at the place, beer poured auburn browny dark for an ipa. I mean, brown. Whose that, brown? Like the song. . .

Nice piney resonation in the nostrils, making up for the lackluster brown ale appearance, but its not necessarily a hoppy aroma, really, just pine, not hops. Taste was thick, good and bitter, more pine again.

Mouthfeel had a little more alcohol heat than should be there. Usual caramel suspects. A little metallic thing going on.

Had on tap at the Sequoia brewing company. Poured a clear amber to the top of a shaker pint with very little foam, some lacing. Aroma was mild citric. The main problem with this beer was it had a very harsh bitterness to it and was very astringent, maybe an unusual hop variety or very hard water but the harshness overwhelmed the other flavors and made it somewhat difficult to drink. Overall it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either and with all the great IPA choices available on the west coast not one I'd go back to.

I had a pint of this beer at their bar last Friday. this is the beer that got me hooked on IPAs

A. Dark golden color. Very typical for the style. Good one inch firm head with lots of lacing.

S. Floral hops. A hint of malt. Citrus and pine scents.

T. Very good. Grapfruit hop bitterness with some biscuit malt flavors.

M. Good carbonation, very bitter but a little thin tasting.

D. Great drinkability for a 7.5 percent beer. the go down quite easily I must confess.

pour is light copper with an orange hue. massive cloud like head that takes forever to dissipate.

light floral and citrus notes. mainly orange and tangerine.

very bitter, lots of pine, lots! has a slight grassy and earthy flavor as well. malts are a bit subdued but there. a slight floral hop flavor lingers in the background

very full feeling and nice light carbonation.

very nice IPA, would like to see it a tad more floral but a nice IPA indeed.

12oz bottle shared by chswimmer. This is a pretty nice gruit - tasty for not having any hops in it. Wait, what? This is an IPA? Well in that case, I might have to change my opinion on this one.

Pours clear golden with a small white head.

Aroma is very malty with caramel and a little grain. Not too much hop presence.

Flavor is also malty, like an English pale ale or maibock almost. Caramel and pale malts with some herbal and citrusy hops. Really not west coast style at all - the antithesis of something like Pliny the Elder.

Clean but rather boring on the palate. Medium body.

Overall, meh, I wasn't a big fan of this one as far as the style goes. It was enjoyable enough, but I don't really consider it an IPA.

Got this one from J347, cheers Jonathan!

Pours honey colored with 3+ finger of sand colored head. Very good lacing & above average head retention

S: Pineyness, lemons

T: Grapefruit, a touch of biscuitty malt, plus a hint of tropical fruit up front. Leafy hops, grapefruit & dryness as this warms, & a bit of toffee hiding in the background. finishes with loads of leafy & herbal hops, plus a touch of caramel. Almost pulled a 4.0

MF: Medium bodied, semi-chewy, low carbonation, fairly good balance, does skew hoppy

Drinks pretty easy, but the hop profile would get old to me after a while, hopheads would disagree

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. The General Sherman looks good and clear with a golden/light amber pour. A half inch of nearly white cap offers decent retention.

Touch of light caramel and cascade on the aroma are classic for the neighborhood, that being in the foothills of the Sierra. Touch of spice is there as well. Well done albeit run of the mill to a degree, though does expand in complexity with warming.

Flavor is good though a bit off as the bitterness seems perhaps a bit strong in tannins. Hop aroma and flavor are present yet not quite convincing, likely for the same reason.

Smooth feel otherwise and with a pleasant citric bitterness. Fairly well balanced if perhaps a bit one dimensional. A decent IPA, easy drinking for its 7.5% without a doubt. Good sipper by the campfire..

I didn't think Fresno had any redeeming qualities. I stand corrected..

Another new IPA for me to try. Could not wait. As soon as I got home last night I cracked this one open as I was really needing it. Served cold and poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 06/08/2010.

The pour was a wonderful clear amber in color with a light orange hue to it. Really nice looking though I have to admit with a soft head of white that reached about ¾ of an inch up the glass and settled down with some nice lacing around the sides.

Aroma is deep citrus hop. Lots of orange and tangerine, definitely on the sweeter side of the spectrum as far as hops go. Nice balance starts to come out as it warms as the bitter citric notes give way to a buttery, smooth malty aroma. As I take the first sip, nice medium body coats the tongue and leaves you very content as the carbonation is enough to really let it go. Nice blending here as the sharp hops are first very noticeable but after a few moments begin to subside. Nice sugary orange notes mixed with a touch of grapefruit but overall not that sharp at all. Nice sweet buttery malts, touches of light bready grains and a smooth, dry and clean finish leave this one very drinkable for sure.

Overall a very solid IPA. Classic west coast style and holds its own with just about anything in the class, no real issues here at all.

This beer was poured a reddish amber color with a thin yellow head. There was a minimal amount of lacing. The smell was that of hops and a caramelized malt that balanced each other nicely.

The taste was a bitter hop flavor that was balanced with a caramel malt that was almost sweet. The beer had an overall bitter taste but was lacking the floral or citrus flavor that is usually found in an IPA. The mouthfeel was good with the beer being a little thick and the CO2 being almost perfect.

Another great beer from Sequoia and another fine IPA. Not as good as their Mineral King IPA, but worth a try if you get a chance.

Sequoia Brewing Co.
Gen. Sherman IPA
12 oz. bottle
7.5% alc.

Appearance= Vigorous pour into pint glass yields a 1.5 finger white head. Appearance leans towards a DIPA. Deep orange color, not opauqe. Nice cascading rings as the beer goes down.

Smell= Sourdough starter! and a little citrus...

Taste= Hops and malts balanced. Taste is good not great. A tad watery on the finish.

Mouthfeel= Good. Thin on the finish. Carbonation is relatively non-existant.

Drinkability= Where's the alcohol? answer= extremely well hidden. Could drink these all night. Ultimate session IPA?? This is the last of the sixer I bought. Beers 1-2 we're good, beers 3-5 were great, the last beer was ok. Kinda weird... Scores would be higher if I revied it on beers 3-5. Good IPA, that's worth it if you find it. I would not seek it out though.

My pour produced a finger's worth of rocky, eggshell-white head with good retention and really sticky lacing. Color was a hazy golden-yellow with a good bit of particulate throughout. The nose was slightly citrusy, but not as intense as other IPAs that had drank recently. Mouthfeel was medium with a tart hops bite on the tongue. Finish had a decent, but not totally memorable, hop bite. It was nice to try, but I might not go for it again.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a clear golden color with a small white, rocky head that fades quickly to a thin film across the top. It appears to have a moderate to high amount of carbonation, giving it a lively appearance.

S: Typical IPA smell, but somewhat muted. There is a decent hop profile with bits of citrus and floral perfume aromas.

T: Herbal, citrus, and floral hops are the main players in the taste. It also has a sort of resiny taste to it. There is a nice hoppy, bitter bite at the end.

M: Its medium body has a sort of oil and resiny feel to it that slightly coats the palate. Despite what appeared to be a lot of carbonation in the appearance, there isn't much when it comes to the feel. It has a lingering bitterness after the finish.

O: I think this is just a slightly above average IPA. It had a decent taste despite a muted aroma. I'm sure I'll get this one occasionally since it's a local, but I've definitely had many IPA's that are superior to this one.

On-tap at Sequoia Brewing (Tower Location)

Pours a clear golden orange color with a sticky white head. Smells quite a bit like grass. Some citrus peel and herbal hop notes, maybe a bit of soap. Incredibly grassy up front on the flavor, too. There is a bit of sweet malt flavor to it, mostly bread. Some light line notes but not much bitterness. Light to medium bodied with medium carbonation.

I was on my way through Fresno on business, and I thought I'd try to find something new and local. I was presently surprised to find a 22 of this IPA at a local liquor store; honestly, my hopes were not up as Fresno is not particularly known for its beer. Pretty average on appearance and smell. Good hops, pine, and citrus on the nose, but pretty subdued. Flavor and mouth feel are great though. Tons of hops all around, lemon, caramel and malts. Mildly sweety with a hint of boozy warmth. Buttery smooth and full with good carbonation; it really costs your mouth. Overall, I am rather pleased with this beer, definitely something I would like to keep in my fridge.
