While on vacation I found myself returning here more frequently than any other bar in town. They have the most taps of anyone in Ouray. While I was in town they were the only bar that had an IPA on tap ! (Avery). The bar inside seems more upscale and has different drafts than the casual bar outside.

Friendly staff, but not really beer geeks. Reasonable prices, especially for a tourist town. While I was there they had Spaten, several offerings from Ska, and Avery, Deschutes, etc.

The food was German and you wont find any vegetarian options here other than belly bloating (but tasty) huge pretzels or St. Fair style nachos.

This is a lovely place to sit outdoors have a nice draft beer and enjoy the mountain scenery.

Stopped in here while visiting Ouray.
It has a similar set-up to a real German biergarten. There are 4-5 picnic tables in the sun and 4 under a covered area. Instead of table service, you order both food and beers from a large stand near the entrance.
They have a menu focusing on sandwiches and burgers as well as authentic German items like a wurst salad, currywurst, and pretzels.
We went with a pretzel plate, pomme frites, a burger, and the "oktoberfest in a bowl" (wursts, kraut, potatoes). Everything was solid, and the pretzels even came with an obatzda-like spread. No complaints about the food, although it wasn't exactly cheap. Burgers, sides, and dishes were all floating around $8-10 each.
For beers they have at least 10 offerings including German beers (Spaten hell, Paulaner weiss, Paulaner marzen), normal imports like Urquell, and tons of local/craft beers from the likes of Ska, Avery, Boulder, Stone, and others. Pretty cool mix.
I like the place. The view's nice, the food was good, and the selection covered all of your craft bases.
The only real knock on the place would be the prices. I did a double take when I saw how much everything was...although the beers actually weren't priced too badly oddly enough.
I'll definitely stop in on my next visit.

The "Switzerland of America" is definatly where you feel you are when you visit this place.
The food is good--very German, and the atmosphere is awesome, but they have a very small, and not very Swiss/Germanic selection of beers.
You sit in a very Bavarian style courtyard, eat at giant picknic tables, while looking at the mountains, so all in all, a very pleasent meal.
With such a small and beautifull town though, this is a must to go see, and maybe get a quick bite to eat at. I wouln't stay long if it's just beer you are after though.

The "Switzerland of America," Ouray, CO is hedged on all sides by vertiginous peaks and accessible by only one road that winds out of the mountains on one side of the town and back into them on the other side. At one end of the main drag is Billy Goat Gruff's Biergarten, a restaurant with large interior patio and open-air bar (I never ventured inside, so I can't comment on the interior). A dozen or so tables with umbrellas offered plenty of space to sit down and enjoy a brew (or a few) and munchies (can't comment on the food; didn't eat anything). BGG's had a nice family atmosphere and there were a few families there taking full advantage of it. Furthermore, this assured me that I could have a pleasant time with a friend and not be disturbed by slovenly drunkenness. Overall, the atmosphere encouraged hanging out with good beer.

As far as the beer itself, there was a handfull of nice micros (e.g. New Belgium: Fat Tire, 1554) and german imports on tap (Spaten, Paulaner. No Beck's).

If the selection was a little larger and I could be sure that it varied a little from time to time, I would be a regular customer at a place like this.

neat t-shirts too, though a little pricey
