I am not sure how retired this beer is since I just bought it and drank it tonight. It is black with a 2 inch thick light brown head. Chocolate aroma and taste, perhaps a hint of coffee, a bit watery but no hint of alcohol. I thought it was pretty good.

A: Fully opaque and a shade brown from solid black with a thin tan head.
S: Moderate cocoa, light milk chocolate.
T: Medium cocoa flavor with moderate chocolate notes.
M: Thin with little carbonation. Less creamy than ideal to complement the taste.
O: Delicious chocolate beverage that would be great with dessert.

Black pour with a brown one-finger head. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla and light espresso. Full bodied with cocoa, roasted malt and light alcohol upfront. Can taste a mild roasted coffee bitterness as the beer warms. Finishes with a light chocolate taste. Full bodied, highly carbonated and creamy.

Appearance: Deep mahogany in color, with a robust, somewhat coarse tan head. Thick, fine-beaded lacing coats the glass wall in unbroken sheets.
Aroma: Robust aromas of cocoa, milk chocolate, and vanilla dominate the aroma. There are also notes of dark-roasted espresso. I did not detect any alcohol in the aroma, interesting considering the relatively high ABV.
Taste: Opens with lots of milk chocolate, soon followed by bitter cold coffee flavors and dark roasted malt, and a wave of sweet, vinous alcohol. Late in the taste, the roasted malt ascends, though an undercurrent of sweet alcohol and milk chocolate remains. The aftertaste, primarily the roasted malt, lingers for quite awhile.
Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, pleasant, and full.
Drinkability/notes: A really excellent dessert beer, which I would hope is offered each winter, rather than as a "one-shot".
Presentation: packaged in a twenty-two ounce brown glass bomber with enameled labeling and a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.
