A: Dark almost pitch black with some light rays going through.

S: Roast and toast!

T: Roasty malts, burnt bread, nutts, saltine crackers, pretzel, and a solid chocolate background. But the flavor is not sticking like i'd like it to.

M: Medium I'd say. Not bad.

O: A great beer! This is one of those that you can session pretty often. I love the black lagers and this one did not disappoint.

S-roasted malt with a brown sugar aroma
T-Light roasted taste that was somewhat malty and had a slightly hop bitter aftertaste that faded back to a roast finish
M-watery with low carbonation, and medium body

A tan froth quickly folds into a thin layer atop this dark brown brew. Aroma consists of caramel malt and milk chocolate. Tastes of grain, roasted malt, subtle dark chocolate and tea. Light bodied and smooth. This is a flavorless beer with no oomph. Moving on...

Pretty nice looking beer,, kinda reddish-dark brown in color, fairly clear but still dark enough to where it's hard to see very far through it, with a nice light brown creamy head that lasted a bit and left sheets of lace.

Aroma and flavors are somewhat malty, with a slightly detectable roastiness, but not bitter astringent roasts like a stout, and maybe a touch of bread and dark fruit, Not a lot of hops, but a slight sweetness comes through.

Somewhat brown-ale like overall, but lighter in body, which is more lager-like.and just a little thin.

Overall it's not too far off the mark for the style, although not outstanding.

A: Pours dark brown with a big fluffy light brown head. Head fades slowly with wonderful retention. Solid, heavy walls of lacing left behind.

S: Nice toasted malt, pretzel-like. Creamy milk chocolate mixes in. Surprisingly nice.

T: Mild sweet and creamy chocolate up front. Sweetness runs out into a toasted malt finish with bittersweet chocolate. Dry in the finish - well attenuated.

M: Very smooth, not watery at all.

O: A simple but tasty schwarzbier. Nice toasted malt and chocolate flavors meld and balance nicely.

I was kind of excited to try this beer after a couple of acquaintances recommended it to me, and while it was alright, I wouldn't drink this as a sipping beer; I probably expected a little too much.

Poured from a bottle to a pint glass, the amount of foam in this beer was almost too much; almost every bottle in my six pack actually foamed up out of the neck of the bottle if I didn't pour it immediately. It foamed up quite well with even a gentle pour, leaving about two and a half fingers of creamy, light tan head that dissipated very slowly. The head lasted so long that I can't give you a description of the lacing, since I was sucking on foam the whole time. The color of the beer was pretty nice, a very dark brown that when held up to the light produced a dark reddish amber.

The aroma was pleasant, though I have smelled better. My nose isn't quite as sensitive as some, so please forgive me if I leave out some things you may have noticed. The toasted grain was readily apparent, and also there were hints of strong coffee and a little bit of earth, though it was toned way down. The malty sweetness was the most prominent, but not overpowering, and there was a small suggestion of hop aroma, but very subdued.

The taste is creamy, with burnt toast, malt and a hint of hops at the front, also with some faint mineral flavor. It fades rather quickly after swallowing to some sticky sweetness with a little bit of dark chocolate. The mouthfeel is very light, typical of a lager, though I feel it could have been a little bit heavier and it would have satisfied me quite well. It's refreshing and something I could drink after a hot summer's day, but probably not something I would buy on the regular, though if I had the opportunity to try it on-tap I would probably bump my score up a little bit. As far as Texas beers go, however, this isn't bad at all.

Very dark brown in the glass. A beige sort of foam and surprisingly nice lacing and pleasantly sudsy as you sip. Interesting aroma of dark malt and cereal.

The dark taste is the main event. There is a bitterish, even sourish burnt flavor. I think there is more of that flavor than warranted by the style, but it's appropriately light bodied, more like a lager. Quite grainy, which is rather pleasant. A touch of malty sweetness that keeps this from getting to dry, but it's on the acidic side. Not one of my favorites.

From the 12 oz bottle bought at Leonard's in Lubbock.

When an ugly pug is on a beer, you must try it.

Appearance - A beautiful dark brown to silky black that has a nice milk chocolate head

Smell - Great hints of coffee, hazelnut, chocolate and some caramel

Taste - The flavor is not nearly as good as the smell unfortunately. The taste is of light coffee and licorice. It seems watered down

Mouthfeel - Where the taste lacks, the mouth feel and smell perk it back up.

Overall - A nice drinker but really lacking the taste I was expecting

12oz bottle

Dark (almost opaque) brown with tinges or red that appear in light, light brown head. In true lager fashion, the head disappears quickly though there is a ring. Nose is smoky dark chocolate bitterness with a surprisingly light middle swirl of malt and hint of lager yeast and a light bitter finish. Some medicinal/smoke notes in the aftertaste. Body is very light, one could almost mistake this for a porter were it not for the light body and tinge of lager yeast.

Tastes like a porter made with lager yeast, complex but ultimately light bodied, perhaps a tad bitter. Wish I could get a hold of this one in my neck of the woods, got this sucker from a beer trade.

Rahr & Sons Ugly Pug Black Lager has a thin, beige head, some lacing, and a dark, yet clear, ruby red, bubbly appearance. The aroma is faint, but one can pick up some dark-roasted barley malt and sweetness. The taste is of burnt toast, rich coffee, some chocolate powder, and sweet, dark-roasted malt. Just a touch of hop bitterness presents itself. The mouthfeel is light and watery, and Ugly Pug finishes crisp, clean, refreshing, mostly dry, mild, and highly drinkable. Overall, this is good.

A very dark beer. I drank this from the bottle so I couldn't measure the head. The smell was very hoppy with a kind of a pilsner smell. Tasting it the smells changed. Hoppy turned into black ale and pilsner turned into hefeweizen. A bit of a strong aftertaste, but it is to be expected from a dark beer. Over all an enjoyable experience. I look forward to trying more of Rhar & Sons products.

Poured into a pint glass. Pours deep, but still slightly transluscent, dark brown with a biege head that dissipates slowly. There's a nice, finger length head left atop the beer. The aroma is of slightly sweet and dark malt that almost smells charred from the smokiness. The taste is dominated by the slightly smoky dark malt that is slightly sweet in the background. The hop presence is minimal, so the malt gets to shine with this beer. The body is light with adequate carbonation. The finish is clean. The drinkability is high. This is a very good beer.

Ugly Pug Black Lager is a dark brown- colored brew with a light tan head of foam that is creamy with tightly packed bubbles. The nose on this beer is one of lightly roasted malts, a touch of mocha, and a small amount of smoke.

Tasting this beer doesn’t reveal any great surprises. The flavor of the beer is right in line with the typical black lager, with tastes of roasted malt, a touch of chocolate, toffee, and lingering maltiness. Some earthy notes and a slight bitterness round out the taste before the beer returns to the flavor of sweet, lightly roasted malt.

Ugly Pug has a lighter body than average, but it does manage to assert itself with its malty, creamy body. It makes a good Schwarzbier session brew and its easy- going nature makes it a good choice for newbies to the style. It would be even better with a slightly heavier, chewier body but it is definitely a respectable effort in its own right and certainly a beer worth trying.

A: Pours a dark brown almost black color. Not much for a head, dissapates very quickly. Not much for lacing either. Looks very clear and filtered when held to the light.

S: Smells of malty caramel. Maybe a slight hoppy aroma.

T: Typical for a black lager all the ingredients are there. Coffee, toffee, caramel, I think I taste a hint of chocolate in the background. Not bad at all.

M: I was slightly disapointed here its not very crisp and could use more carbonation. Taste sorta flat. As I have read from other BA's this must be a typical description of the mouthfeel of this beer. One BA even described it as a "Flat Coke".

O: This is not a bad beer at all. However there is room for improvement. I've had better and I've had worse.

I had this in Dallas just before I went to the American Airlines Center to watch the Blackhawk's first game of the season. (Oct 7)

It came in an ice cold bottle and was accompanied by a frozen mug. I had to let it warm up a bit.

As with most schwarzbiers you are going to get a dark beer that is not too heavy but not too light. And I think Ugly Pug lived up to the style. It had all the malty characteristics one would expect to find in a dark beer. It was roasty and toasty. I was expecting a little bit more, but I was happy with what I got.

My only real complaint was that it was a little bit too carbonated for my taste. However, it's ease of drinkability made this easy to overlook.

This will probably be my go-to brewery whenever I find myself in Texas.

Poured into a Tumbler

Appearance-Pours a dark brown with a two finger tan head. Dissipates quickly leaving a thin film on top during the whole drink.

Smell-Smoke, Some sweet dark fruits. Some subtle chocolate.

Taste-At first it tastes like absolutely nothing, then some sweetness and some bitterness and black pepper spice comes in. Finish carrys over the smokiness and some fruit. Nicely balanced.

Mouthfeel-It's clean, but it's like a flat coke. Not very enjoyable mouthfeel which is a shame b/c the taste really isn't thad bad.

Overall-I do not enjoy Rahr and Son beers but going to a local beer store that didn't have anything that I wanted to buy I just bought this single for 1.50 so I didn't walk out w/ nothing. However, this is the best of all the Rahr and Son brews i've had.

Unfortunately I don't think others are grading this beer by style. It nails the style of a schwartzbeir. Dark black with a creamy white head, nice retention and lacing.

The aroma is big on roasted malts and coffee with some earthy notes and a touch of cocoa. Simple, earthy, and dark.

Nice light body with roasted coffee and cocoa flavors. Clean with some earthy tones.

Nice light body and balanced

Very easy to drink and enjoyable.

Very underwhelming in most aspects. There was not as much full flavor that you might expect from a black lager. The aroma was very soft and did not tease me into the drink. Never while having it did I want to continue my drink. Easily said, it was very boring. There was nothing great or even good about this beer.

Recieved as an extra in a trade with texasclimber.

A - Actually a pretty nice looking beer. Really is about black, with red and brown running through it in the light. Small off-white head rose up a half a finger and dissipated to nothing rather quickly. Nothing left on the glass.

S - Roasted malts, slightly acidic, bit of lagar yeast. Little bit of unsweeted chocolate and some caramel.

T - Roasted malt, bit of coffee. Some chocolate, some yeast on the end. It's slightly bitter and acidic. Easy to drink.

M - Lighter side of medium bodied with fairly middling carbonation.

O - This is a solid beer. It's unspectacular but it was a nice thirst quencher for me that I killed in about three minutes. Wouldn't mind it again after a workout.

Ugly Pug is a really cool brew. You get a pretty big, though not overwhelming taste of a dark beer while still being able to enjoy a rather light body. That's the schwartzbier style. I haven't had a ton of different schwartzbiers, but this is definitely far from the worst of the lot I've tried. The roasted malts really give you that big flavor of coffee. It's very drinkable, due to it's lighter body, so get ready to put down a few of these without feeling like you made a mistake.

12oz bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint. Bottle generously provided as an extra by Exiled, thanks Jason!

A - Although described as a black lager, or schwarzbier, it pours rather brown, almost like coke. A swirling, 1.5-finger head lingers for a few minutes, but then dissipates, leaving a milky cap. It's possible to see lots of carbonation rising to the surface. Not much lacing at all, only a very little here and there.

S - The aroma has hints of roast, chocolate, and a strange metallic quality to it. Overall it's fairly weak, though, so once it's in the glass for a little, I'm only getting a bit of roast.

T - Again, the flavors here are just lacking. At first it's a refreshing burst of light coffee, but after that it's all downhill with muddied notes of chocolate, hops, and that recurring metallic taste. Unfortunately (or fortunately), the flavors are short-lived, as before I'm even a third done with the beer, each sips brings about a second of flavor before being washed away in a watery current. Very strange.

M - Mouthfeel is light-bodied with high carbonation. Pretty smooth drinking.

D/O - Drinkability is low. Besides a slight coffee finish, the flavors are nearly non-existent after about 5 minutes. At that point I am almost drinking watered-down coffee... Would definitely help if the flavors had any staying power, but even then, they weren't incredibly noteworthy to begin with.
