A: Black with ruby highlights and a thin soapy head.

S: Sweet roasted malt and coffee aromas.

T: Initial taste is a sweet roasted coffee and chocolate flavor. There are some floral notes from a very slight touch of hops. It finishes sweet with a chocolate aftertaste.

M: It is very light in body with low carbonation, maybe watery, but I kind of like it.

D: The light body of the beer and the great flavors make this a very, very good session beer. Especially in these winter months.

Dark brown/amber, clear. No head. Nice carbonation.

Mild dark ripe fruit. Belgium candy sugar essence. Very light raisin. Toffee notes. Sour/tart edge.

Surprisingly weak taste. Mild chocolate/roasted/raisin.

Nice carbonation. Moderate foamation.

Refreshing brew. I disliked it at first, then it grew on me. Tastes like a watered down Porter/Belgium ale mix.

12 oz bottle.

Nice cascading head when poured..decent retention. Translucent ruby-brown color.
Aroma is certainly different..bold burnt/woody smell and a mild (almost fruity) sourness. I can't remember the last time I used the word "sour" to describe a schwarzbier..
Roasted malt taste & subtle chocolate undertones.
Mouthfeel is decent, with a lighter body than I'd care for typically for the style.
Overall, this is a pretty drinkable brew, and the first I've sampled from this brewery.
Thanks to Quaffer for the bottle via trade.

This beer pours a very dark brown color, with a fluffy light brown head. the head fades slowly, leaving a good lacing.

This beer has a malty sweet aroma. It smells nutty also. It has a slight grainy aroma also. A very subtle coffee aroma is present.

This beer pretty much tastes like it smells. Coffee and sweet malt. Nutty. Some grain mixes in aw well. Maybe a very slight chocolate flavor.

This beer is slightly thin, but crisp. It leaves a nutty aftertaste.

This beer would probably make a good session beer. It seems low in alcohol, and the flavor is not aggressive.

Overall: Nice beer. A little boring, but not bad at all.

Served on-tap in a pint glass. Dark brown body, clear, with a one-finger mocha head. The head dissipates fairly quickly leaving only specks of lacing.

Decent aroma of roasted malt, licorice, and dark fruit. Not a lot more to offer here.

The flavor has a nice roasted malt flavor, as well, and comes across sweeter than I would have expected from the aroma. Some chocolate in the flavor as well and the aforementioned dark fruit.

The mouthfeel has a much more thin and light consistency than I would have desired. Overall, a decent brew.

Thanks to Assurbanipaul for this one.

Pours a dark brown with a slight 2 inch head that doesn't stick around and leaves no lacing. The aroma reminds me quite a bit of a pilsner or a dunkel. The nose is slightly grainy, a hint of sulfur, and roasted malt. The flavor follows suit, without the sulfur. It has roasted malts, sweet candy sugar, and just a hint of chocolate. It's really goes together well. The mouthfeel is a bit watery and slightly under carbonated. This is a really drinkable beer. Good stuff.

had this beer on tap as part of the brewery tour. Served in a pint glass cool.

nice tan head and a dark black/brown body.

smell is earthy but not much else

tastes like a light lager but with only a hint of roast flavor.

light and watery

I have seen this trend in alot of texas beers . Watery beers that are probably thirst quenching but not conforming style-wise. This beer just is weak. Way too watery tasting, not enough malt umph nor enough noble hop character. Hops taste weird too. Off, almost catty

Poured from a 12oz bottle.

Mahogany without much head.

Nose is toasty burnt malt, which isn't bad for the style.

Taste is bitter chocolate malt and roasty with a hint of caramel sweetness.

It could use a bit more heft in the body, but overall a tasty brew.

Can't believe I haven't reviewed this yet...one of my all time favs from Rahr. Had on tap at the brewery and out of the bottle but I'll review the on-tap version.

A: Pours black with very little light coming through. A big dark brown head slowly fades to a small layer and leaves a ton of lacing.

S: The nose is full of cocoa, chocolate malts, coffee, and a slight sweetness.

T: The taste is excellent with a big dose of chocolate and coffee with a malty sweetness and a slightly roasty/bitter finish.

M: The feel is creamy and smooth...very porter-ish.

D: This is one of the most drinkable dark beers I've had. The ABV is incredibly low for a beer with this much flavor. I sat and drank 4 or 5 of these during the big game on Sunday and wasn't even phased.

This is very close to being a porter...if it was a tad darker I'd say it was. If you can find it on tap it's excellent...the bottle falls a bit short of this score in the mouthfeel department but it's still good.
