A: Pours a dark brown almost black color. Not much for a head, dissapates very quickly. Not much for lacing either. Looks very clear and filtered when held to the light.

S: Smells of malty caramel. Maybe a slight hoppy aroma.

T: Typical for a black lager all the ingredients are there. Coffee, toffee, caramel, I think I taste a hint of chocolate in the background. Not bad at all.

M: I was slightly disapointed here its not very crisp and could use more carbonation. Taste sorta flat. As I have read from other BA's this must be a typical description of the mouthfeel of this beer. One BA even described it as a "Flat Coke".

O: This is not a bad beer at all. However there is room for improvement. I've had better and I've had worse. (739 characters)

Aroma: up front chocolate, some coffee notes, some burnt malt, coffee persists as it warms

Appearance: tan head dissappears quickly, small and large bubbles

Flavor: Full chocolate, with some burnt malt flavors, clean lager yeast, roast flavors persists

Mouthfeel: thin mouthfeel, low carbonation, no astringency

Overall: This was not indicative of a true German Schwartz beer. However, it is very drinkable...but not to style. I was intrigued by the top beers in Zymurgy mag, but it looks like this was a ballot stuffer. =) (527 characters)

Very underwhelming in most aspects. There was not as much full flavor that you might expect from a black lager. The aroma was very soft and did not tease me into the drink. Never while having it did I want to continue my drink. Easily said, it was very boring. There was nothing great or even good about this beer. (314 characters)

An excellent beer. Taste of roasted coffee. Very smooth. A bit like guiness with more flavor and less wateriness. Aftertaste is a bit bitter and lasts a decent amount of time. Smells like it tastes (good).

The bottle features a great design: a pug with an eye patch and an underbite, sticking out its tongue.

Easily one of my new favorites for the price and availability. You can even buy it in drugstores in texas. It's brewed locally and I have never seen it outside texas. (478 characters)

My first review, so let's see how this goes. Poured out of a 12 oz. bottle into a shaker pint glass.

Dark black color with an unexpectedly impressive tan head. Unfortunately faded quickly, but I blame that partly on the glass.

Smell was more or less nonexistant, maybe a hint of cocoa? Taste was nice - faint chocolate malt dominated each sip.

Grabbed a chocolate chip cookie during the last third of the glass, which was a pleasant addition to the mix. You can't say no to homemade cookies.

Nothing too extreme here, but better than I expected. Solid B. (560 characters)

This black lager had a clean blackish-brown color with a cream colored head that disapates not long after poured.

The smell is slightly roasted with a hint of cold coffee. Has a smoothe mouth feel with a little bite on the way down.

A lot of malt/oaty taste with a bit of sweetness like a porter or oatmeal stout but not as heavy. Light bitter finish with a pleasnt aftertaste. (385 characters)

Pours dark ,almost black, with some amber hues. About an inch of creamy head subsides rather quickly.
An aroma of coffee and roasted malt..
When tasting, the roasted malt and coffee continue through a slightly bitter finish. I really enjoy the aftertaste.
The dark beer has a light body, quite carbonated that goes down well.
I really enjoyed this beer and will definately have another. (392 characters)

Ugly Pug is a really cool brew. You get a pretty big, though not overwhelming taste of a dark beer while still being able to enjoy a rather light body. That's the schwartzbier style. I haven't had a ton of different schwartzbiers, but this is definitely far from the worst of the lot I've tried. The roasted malts really give you that big flavor of coffee. It's very drinkable, due to it's lighter body, so get ready to put down a few of these without feeling like you made a mistake. (484 characters)

schwarzbier style, but not as rounded or flavorful as some of the better ones i've tried. (although my standard is death and taxes, and those are big kegs to fill.)

coffee grinds, earth, minerals, smoke, bitter chocolate, all very mildly detectable.

thin body. finishes clean.

easy-going session beer to the max. (317 characters)

L: Dark red color in light, dark brown out of light... light tan head, no more than an inch, that dissipates slowly to a nice collar

S: A toasty wood aroma with hints of chocolate and coffee

T: Toasted wood taste with a dark chocolate aftertaste... has a bit of sweetness that cuts back on the bitterness of the beer

F: Very carbonated and crisp, leaves a kind of waxy feel on your tongue

O: The sweetness of the beer cuts back on the bitterness and definitely makes it easier to drink... overall a pretty solid beer... I'll definitely revisit this beer in the future (571 characters)

A: Pours with little head that fades quickly. Color almost that of a brown ale, coca cola maybe. Very little lacing.

S: Coffee, burnt , caramel.

T: Some roasted barley, semi sweet, coffee, hint of caramel.

M: To me thin, lack of carbonation.

O: Good beer but not great beer. A feeling that it is lacking. (308 characters)

Review is optional but now it is telling me I have to write one. Well my husband and I are Guinness fans and this reminds me of that beer but little bit lighter. (161 characters)
