I poured a 12 oz bottle into a glass mug...

The beer was a clear golden color with an average sized white head with tight bubbles. Smells very sweet, lots of malt, with some lemon and pepper. The taste is also very sweet, lots of bready flavor with some bitter lemon hops on the back of the tongue. The beer is kind of heavy, the alcohol is detectable, and it has a nice lingering finish. This is a well done bock, I enjoyed the balance how it started sweet and finished bitter.

Appearance: Pours a lightly hazy golden with a thin, sudsy, white head that persists for a while as a thin film.

Smell: Light aromas of grains with a bit of grassy hops.

Taste: Light breadiness, some sweet malts, citric tartness with a hint of spiciness going down. The finish is a light, grassy, hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied, high carbonation.

Drinkability: Light in flavor, but pretty drinkable. The alcohol is well hidden.

I acquired this one in a mixed 6-pack trade from brewdlyhooked13 on his recent business trip to Texas. Neat label of a bucking bronco on the 12 oz bottle with no freshness date.

Appearance: Aggressive white, fizzy foam on the pour into my pint. After about a minute the head is reduced to an 1/8 inch on the surface. Body of beer is gold and slightly cloudy.

Smell: Mild citrus hops and lots of malts.

Taste: Bready malts trailed by a nice dose of mildly citrus flavored hops. Also, slight hints of butter & honey.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with ample carbonation. Slightly watered down, in my opinion. Slightly bitter aftertaste.

Drinkability: Easy drinker, but watch out for the high ABV. Nice, but I've had better maibacks. Wish it was a bit more rich in flavor.

7.5%ABV bottle into my slender & top heavy Rare Vos glass. Might as well get some use out of it before it falls over itself & shatters.

Big powdery head, though quite faint & not big on sticking around. Body is a glittery caramel amber with lots of floaties.

Nose is big on juicy melon & bitter orange. Spicy/sweet pungent hop notes, with a little bit of honey & straw. Really inviting.

Taste is sweet with lemon, orange, & honey upfront. Light leafy bitterness down the middle, with an easy, dry cookie finish.

Feel is thin & plenty carbonated. The malt is just barely a touch filling. Maybe just a bit lighter then it should be. Endgame is dry & just barely lingering with alcohol & hops. Really eager to see if BigTex sent me two of these.

Though it has been in the fridge most of the time, sitting on this one far too long apparently worked out for me. :)

Umm...seroiusly, I need a case of this beer for further review. Wow this is one tight lady. A strong bock that I didn't even know was 8% until it was buzzing around my head. Amber-brown with a dense white cap that laces the whole glass. Smell is a little muted but there is a nice toasty malt and sweetness there. The flavor is a kick that is full of potent toasty, bready malt flavors and it has a little underlying hop bite that brings it back. Nice melding and the aftertaste last a good spell without any really noticable boozy qualities. NIce med-full body, but very drinkable.

Pours a clear deep gold with minimal head. Aroma is faint, barely malty and sweet.

Taste is lightly malty, toasty and sweet with elements of light caramel. Just the mere hint of hop presence with that characteristic nutty, pungent bock flavor. Overall, a very clean, gentle flavor profile with no trace of alcohol, despite its uncharacteristic ABV.

Mouthfeel is light and smooth, drinkability is extremely high -- deceptive, almost too smooth, as I downed a liter before realizing as it kicked me in the head. Would this qualify as an Imperial maibock? Another winner from Rahr.

[edit] After the first batch, Fritz tinkered with the recipe just a little. Slightly darker (more of a copper color), a touch maltier, maybe a faint metallic element. Good/bad balances out, so I'm leaving the numbers the same.

As a Fort Worth native, I'm always interested in what the Rahr brewers are doing. And while I've never been all that impressed with their beers, I still like to give them the benefit of the doubt. So when a buddy of mine returned to DC from a recent trip to Cowtown, and offered me a bottle of the Rahr maibock, I couldn't resist. And I'm glad I didn't.

It's a subdued golden color out of the bottle. Little head. Light, malty aroma, but not much else is discernible. However the taste is quite pleasant. Deeply malty with a light and crisp finish, the high alcohol content of this beer is very deceptive. Not a session beer, although you could easily want to make it one. I believe that Rahr may have finally hit the nail on the head with this one. It's a seasonal keeper. Nicely done.

Part of a mixed case of 6 packs I brought back from a trip to Ft. Worth. After the first couple of beers I thought that there was something seriously wrong with this beer. As I sit down to review it I notice it is a Maibock. Well, that explains a lot for me.

Appearance: Poured from the 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. The beer is clear and golden in color. I was getting ready to ding this for not being more brown, but for the style it is not too bad. My pour produces a white head near 1/2 inch. If I had used a pilsner glass I would have gotten much more.

Smell: Some light grainy malts. Nothing hop like. Perhaps a bit bready or maybe I am reaching just to find something.

Taste: Malty, not roasted malts. More grainy, bready, perhaps a touch of caramel. Slightly sweet. No hop presence with this beer.

Mouthfeel: Lighter than expected with some good carbonation. At around 8% ABV this one is a bit of an alcohol bomb, but the alcohol is well hidded. I get no bick warming wensation or alcohol burn in my throat.

Drinkability: Very drinklable for such high ABV, almost dangerous. I think this is so drinkable because it is kinda bland. At $8.99 (or was it $9.99?) a six pack I will probably not purchase again. It's not that great.

A - 1/4" off-white head goes immediately to a cap. Rich, golden honey color. Lots of visible carbonation long after the head is gone.

S - Super malty. Grainy. Honey. Hops? We don't need no stinking hops!!!

T - Tons of malt. Rich honey flavor. Almost the hop profile of some tripels. Simple and straightforward.

M - Full, round body. Between mid and high level of carbonation. Quick finish.

D - Good drinkability. Beer is fairly big in mouthfeel and ABV, two would be sufficient to knock off the chill.

Pretty bright colored golden amber color with smallish head.

Aroma is pretty subtle with some hops.

The flavor is different. Lots of alcoholic warmth with some malt and a bit of hop bite. The negative is a bit of a strange aftertaste that I couldn't get into.

Tons of refreshing carbonated mouthfeel.

A pretty good beer but a lousy value. Everywhere I have seen this beer has it very expensive, and I just don't think it is good enough to merit the price. ($2.19 for a single bottle or $9.99 for a six pack at the beer shop I was at in Austin. Other locations I've visted had similiar prices)
