Very happy to try this new beer from Rahr's. Since re-opening last year, Rahr has been making better beers and this one is a great example.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is cream, oats, roasted malt and some chocolate. Everything you look for in an oatmeal stout is present.

The flavor is dominated by heavily roasted/burnt malts with some bitter chocolate, oats, coffee and cream. All of the flavors meld well together and form a very nice imperial oatmeal stout.

Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Very nice.

Thanks to lnashsig for this one. Poured from a 22oz bomber into my Bruery tulip. February, 2011 release I presume.

Bistre liquid, very dark but not quite opaque (as revealed when held to a strong light). Three fingers of khaki foam recedes slowly to a lasting soapy head. Soft frothy lacing adheres fairly well.

Coffee, sweet potato, toasted grain/wheat, and molasses in the nose.

The flavor profile follows the aroma closely, but adds some mild bitterness mid-way through. No discernable hop flavor per se. Root-y finish. Vaguely salty throughout (brings to mind teryaki sauce at times).

Medium-bodied, lightly carbonated, and faintly creamy. Warming, but not quite hot.

Decent balance, though lacking depth compared to the heavy hitters of the style.

I thought I had already reviewed this but BA says differently. The first time I had Rahr's Snowmageddon, I thought it was a pretty good beer. It was was tasty but I thought wasn't heavy enough for my liking. The first Snowmageddon I tried was the first batch from 2010. Since then I've come to like the Rahr brewery a lot more, mostly because of their beers that use roasted and chocolate malts. For some reason their beers that use them are by far their best (Ugly Pug, Iron Thistle, Winter Warmer, especially the BBWW[, and the Snowmageddon]). I remember having some of my brother's Snowmageddon not too long ago and enjoyed it more then than the first time I had it. Now I'll see if that wasn't a fluke.

When you pour this out, try to tip the bottle more than you think you should because I didn't get much head on mine, about half an inch. It was light tan in color and creamy, had decent retention, and fizzed away fairly quickly. No lacing. Pitch black at first glance, the beer is a deep, dark ruby color and a bit opaque.

This smells good as soon as you pour it out. None of the aromas are very strong but the smell is complex overall. Roasted coffee, rich cocoa, sweet and sugary chocolate, dark fruits of fig and raisin, a mild booziness, and a touch of tobacco.

This is definitely a beer you want to let warm up in order to better appreciate it. The taste is much like the smell in that none of the flavors are very strong but there is good complexity. There's more of a hoppy bitterness than I expected but it's mild. More prominent are the dark fruit flavors of fig and raisin, adding sweetness and come after the initial hop presence. Next comes the goodness, what I love about stouts, the roasty, chocolatey, coffee flavors. There is some warm booziness but it's not overpowering at all. Later on comes tobacco, and since I love cigars, I welcome it. This isn't a very robust or in-your-face stout but it does taste good.

The beer is very smooth and has a medium carbonation that keeps it interesting with the drinkability being high. Sweetness makes it just a bit slick.

This is a good stout although I wouldn't say it's a very good representation of what most would think of an imperial stout. You think big, bold flavors with the style, and although the Snowmageddon can't be described as that, the beer still has good flavors and enough of them to make it a well-balanced and tasty beer. I'd rather it have a heavier beer but it is drinkable. So, while I wish it was "more", it's still good. I'd love to have another!

22 oz bottle

Poured a deep mahogany colored body with a thin head.

Smells of chocolate, raisins and a slight coffee tang.

Slight coffee tang with chocolate and roasted malt/nuts.

Thin body, almost a milk stout style, but with more alcohol

Very nice and easy on the palate with nice finish.

Poured from a 650ml bomber into a pint glass. Released earlier this year. Heard it needed some aging so let it sit till now. It was mostly black in color with mahogany edges. It had an average sized, brown foamy head that settled into a collar and covering film. Good sheeting with just a little sticking.

The aroma was roasted malt, slight char, bitter coffee and still a good dose of booze. Was good but needed something more to it. The taste follows the aroma. Starts with a bit of sweet and then the bitter from the coffee and chocolate come in at the end. Again, good but doesn't really make a lasting impression. Mouthfeel is near full with good carbonation and good aftertaste.

Overall, a good middle of the pack ImpStout for me. I was here for the Snowmageddon in DFW that hit the brewery and is the story behind the beer so had to try it. Good to see Rahr continue their maturation as a brewery and try new styles. Avail here in TX obviously. Rotation - it was good but one was enough for me. [N;O]

Thanks to JJFoodie for this!

Pours a super dark brown, not quite black. Medium tan head, looking a bit bubbly. Nice roasted malt notes and subtle chocolate notes, with a touch of coffee. Fairly spot on with the taste, little bit more roasted and a hair sweeter. Carbonation is a touch off and a little stingy, but aside, body is medium to full bodied and creamy.

Nothing spectacular, but it's solid and not bad at all.

2012 vintage
A: poured into a snifter to a deep black with a finger of dense tan head that is slow to fade and leaves decent lacing
S: smells of roasted malts and chocolate with a little coffee. slightly sweet on the nose
T: taste is fairly delicate with some milk chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, and light sweetness. swallow is assertive roasted malt flavor with some lingering chocolate
M: smooth and velvety on the palate with soft carbonation and a slightly drying finish
O: As an Oatmeal stout this is really good. I should have drank it a little sooner but the flavors are still there and very smooth and balanced. Well made and goes down easy.
