Or, our roof collapsed and we decided to brew this beer?

Pours a dark black in the glass with some foam and thin lacing. There’s some roast, some cocoa, some weak coffee… thin mouthfeel. Hits all the right notes for an imperial stout but lacks any poetry in doing so. I’m not wow’d or surprised by this beer in the least. The story behind it seems to be the most interesting thing about this beer.

1 pint 6 fl oz brown glass bottle with generally appealing label art and branded pry-off pressure cap acquired at a local bottle shop and served into an Avery stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Austin, Texas. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average. 9% ABV according the label. 2013 vintage. Reviewed as an oatmeal stout since Rahr & Son's website identifies it as such.

Served cold - at fridge temp - and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Pours a half finger wide head of nice khaki colour. Healthy looking. Nice creaminess and thickness. Complexion could be softer, but it's decent. No real lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Head retention is below average - about 1 minute - not a great sign.

Body colour is a predictable opaque solid black. No yeast particles or sediment is visible. Appears undercarbonated.

Overall, it's pretty standard fare for an oatmeal stout. Not unique or special. I'm optimistic.

Sm: Chocolate malts, milk chocolate, oats, lactose, cream, and a kiss of burnt sugars/char. Unfortunately, I don't find any roasted barley in the aroma. Coffee is also sorely missed.

No yeast character, alcohol, overt hop character, or off-notes are detectable.

It's a pleasant aroma on the sweeter side for an oatmeal stout. Average in terms of strength.

T/Mf: Taste is too sweet, and the creamy/lactose notes feel artificial, as does the vanillicin. The body features a generic dark malt/chocolate malt build, with no perceptible roasted barley. While the flavour profile does evoke chocolate, it doesn't evoke coffee - to the beer's detriment. The oats are also quite buried, but the smoothness and wetness of the texture reveals they've done their work.

Below average depth of flavour. Average duration and intensity of flavour. Has a nice balance and cohesion, but it's far from a carefully brewed gestalt beer, and lacks intricacy, subtlety, and complexity. It's more simple an oatmeal stout than it really needs to be.

No yeast character, overt hop character, or off-flavours come through. There is some unnecessary alcohol warmth, unfortunately.

Has a decent presence on the palate, with moderate thickness and a medium body. Overcarbonated. Filling. Sticky. This texture doesn't really enhance the taste in any way, but it does an okay job at not drawing attention to itself. Far from ideal. I do like that the texture is creamy.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, or harsh.

Dr: There are a wealth of superior oatmeal stouts available well below this price point. The one contract brewed for Trader Joe's comes to mind. This is just more disappointing work from Rahr & Sons, and while I'll finish the bottle with some effort, I see no need to buy it again. It's just a very boring oatmeal stout with no boldness or inspiration behind it. I wouldn't recommend it to friends or trade partners; it's pretty underwhelming.

Poured very dark brown, almost black, with a nice tan head that lasted quite a while, eventually subsiding to a thin sheen along the top with a nice froth around the sides of the glass, leaving good lacing.

Smelled of roasted malts, coffee, some chocolate.

Tasted bold, coffee, chocolate, and roasted malts for sure, with a touch of dark fruits and a bit of alcohol warming.

Feel is somewhat medium bodied, thinner than expected for the style, but still nice. Carbonation is light. Bitterness and coffee flavors linger nicely afterwords.

Overall it's not spectacular, but I do like this beer. It's almost along the lines of an oatmeal stout, but a little heavier.

RE-review notes: I wouldn't change much, except to note that it's really hard to tell this is anything higher than about 8% alcohol. Otherwise I would say that the consistency between batches seems to be excellent. Once again I enjoyed this beer, will pick one up every year. Rahr has done well lately, I have enjoyed several of their selections that I've had of recent.

Appearance: Dark brown glass shows murky edges when back lit. Struggles to hold a thin halo of brown foam that leaves a bit of lace.

Smell: Rich malty base has toffee sweetness, a dark rum raisin note, a bit of smoke or dark roast, and a small black bread crumb.

Taste: Malty but comes back to center in the swallow. A hint of earthy hop leaves in the finish. Pretty clean profile, I'm getting a bit of brown paper bag (ah, just noticed the 2012 vintage, will have to talk to my local Specs about selling older stock). Light sourness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Prickly carbonation, slick medium heavy body has a mild chew.

Overall: A nice big brown ale, hard to call it a stout. Has a lot of character and flavor, but not so OP that it is any kind of challenge to tackle the bomber. A happy reminder that Rahr survived their roof collapse and came back stronger.
