Picked up a bottle in Baltimore, MD at the brew pub. 750mL bottle, corked and caged at Sly Fox in Royersford, PA. Interesting how that works...
Poured into my Brewers Art chalice, this is a fine looking beer! Brilliant clarity that really show of the lazy beads of carbonation slowly rising out of the depths of this "devil" beer. The head needs no coaxing to rise and rise. It forms a beautiful white cap that rounds out over the chalice and creates a picture perfect beer. The head does diminish a little bit after a minute, but leaves scars of lacing all over the glass.
The aroma is subtle but intoxicating. Softly floral, with obvious whiffs of yeast and sweet fruits. Notes of apricot, honeydew, and lavender are all present.
Doughy and sweet with enough bitterness to round out the flavor. Alcohol is present here, but shows no heat thankfully. There are notes of peppercorn, and a pleasant dry finish. Pretty much can say that this is the best American example of the style I have come across to date.
Mouthfeel is dead-on. Expansive carbonation and a medium to light body. It give the impression that this is a lighter bodied beer and really subtracts from the 7.5% abv. Makes this beer more drinkable.
Again I say, this has got to be one of the better American versions of a Belgian Strong Golden Ale available. Enough complexity that I would want to buy again and I think that this has great potential for interesting food pairings. I have had the entire bottle in one sitting and I think I now know why these beers are considered "devilish"...

a - poured a one finger thick off-white head into a snifter that left good lacing and sheeting throughout. the body was a bright, pale golden color.
s - bready with honey aromas as well. apples and some floral aromas come through as well.
t - same as above with the fruitiness more pronounced. the hops really shine through here too.
m - creamy, slick and coating.
o - excellent beer and stands up to the classics in this style.

A: Poured into a FFF Teku (since its the most Metalz glass I own) the bright white head persisted at a finger tall for a good minute before slowly receding to a thin layer tiny bubbles. The brew is a moderate to highly hazy golden yellow color with a constant stream of bubbles coming up the edge of the glass.
S: Mild to medium strength spicey phenols coming through from the yeast. mild grapefruit and citrus hop aroma balances nicely with the phenols. Some lemon and funky almost saisonish aromas coming through. Good balance overall.
T: The earthy, spicey phenols come through prominently in the taste. Yeast plays a big role in this beer. The lemon zest and citrus flavor also seem to be contributing flavors from the yeast. The hop bitterness is moderate with the balance being.. on the yeast side but balanced on the hop/malt side with maybe a liiitle bit more on the hop side. A slight bready character but malt is very much takes a back seat in this beer. The dirt/earth flavor gets stronger as the beer warms up.
M: Moderately high to high levels of carbonation, almost sharp on the palette. Very dry finish which ads to the feeling of carbonation. No astringency but there is abit of alcohol warmth making the drinkability in moderate.
O: A tasty beer overall the phenols are kept in check even though the yeast is the star in this beer. The hop character comes through more so when it warms up and it gets more drinkable.
