Have been going to the Black Rose since it has opened and was hoping this would be similar to the Irish pubs I have frequented in DC and New York. Unfortunately, it isn't. First thing you notice when you walk in the door is the reservation podium. Bar space is crowded, cramped and nearly impossible to get a beer. No darts, and focus seems to be on food versus creating the pub environment. Irish music was ok, however, as it was cramped and crowded, it was virtually impossible to enjoy and talk. Stopped going as the last time I was there, I felt rushed and almost like I was on the server's schedule and not mine. If you are looking for a different experience, try O'Tooles on Bridge Street.

The Black Rose is a good spot to stop in if you are looking for a typical beer selection, some good food and a crowd a little older then the rest of the bars on Ionia.
There beer selection kinda sucks, it is about the same as a Buffalo Wild Wings minus the standard north american brews (ie, bud, bud light). The only local brew they carry on draught is Bells Oberon and that is seasonal, Other wise they have Arcadia"s IPA in bottles. But they have about the best scotch lists in GR.
The real reason to stop in is the Food, The shepherds pie, corned beef sandwich, and the Rasher-stuffed chicken are all great choices off the menu.
The Staff is friendly and there is live music almost every night of the week. Just a fun place to hide from reality.

i was not impressed at all with their selection of beers on draught. first of all, they only had 6-8 beers on tap. thankfully, no domestic macrobrews (other than a sam adams). they had guinness, newcastle, smithwick's, bass, a couple other british beers, a sam adams and oberon. i understand that it is supposed to have an irish pub feel, but none of these beers does much for my palate. they should have at least one IPA or pale ale for hopheads like me who might wander in. my friend and i are just getting our feet wet (with beer) in the beer world, and i don't feel qualified yet to write reviews of beer, but i can say that i know a lot more about beer than our bartender did. however, he was very nice and let us have samples of almost every single beer and bug him with our many beer questions without losing his good humor. also, i think he intentionally left one of my beers off my tab because of our enthuiasm (and my tip). very nice of him. but, like i said, he hardly knew anything about beer. he didn't even know the ABVs of any of the beers; only that (he thought) guinness was the lowest.
another thing that bothered me about this place: the bartender and the waitress told us like 2 or 3 times (each) that they were about to leave and asked if we wanted to cash out or transfer our tabs to someone else...i don't understand why this was such an ordeal or why they couldn't just switch it without bothering us...it almost seemed like they wanted us to leave when they left so they would get our tips. i don't understand why the restaurant can't sort out this problem. i asked the bartender if he would get the tip if i put it on my card and he said, "not technically, no." so i gave him a tip before he left. very strange situation.

Whenever I visit the Grand Rapids area this is one of the first places I look forward to the most.
The last time I went it was cold and sleety out and when I walked in, I felt a sudden warmth from not only the 2 fireplaces but the atmosphere as well. It was well decorated with appropriate Irish attire and the music was all Irish or Celtic in origin. It just felt cozy. My friends and I walked to the back where they had a little bar, maybe about 3 or 4 barstools long, and proceeded to drink there for hours.
The wait-staff were very friendly and whenever we had questions on the selections of alcohol they would give us a free sample to try. The food we had was well prepared and delicious.
I can't wait for my next visit to Grand Rapids!

I have enjoyed stopping into the Black Rose many times, sometimes by myself after work for a pint while I read, and others dinner and drinks with friends. The atmosphere of the Rose is very comfortable an homey. They have fireplaces and play as far as I can tell only irish music. I have been there when there are live bands too that manage to add to the scene rather than detract as some live acts can. Foodwise they are solid, I would do bad things to good people for their Guinness Irish Stew. That stuff is amazing. In the realm of beer, to be honest the only thing I have drank in there are pints of Guinness. Overall, the Rose is a great place.

While I most often frequent this pub for lunch -- therefore unable to enjoy the fine selection of Irish and American brews -- I really like the place! The interior decor is perfect, with two fireplaces, two bars , a small stage and an outdoor patio (in season).
The bar staff knows how to pour a fine guinness. The wait staff and kitchen staff esems to suffer from turnover. It's rare to see the same people working there after six months. the kitchen can be slow, so let them know if you are in a hurry.
Here's a trick. If you are attending an event at the Van Andel Arena, have dinner at "the Rose", park in the little lot just to the south of the restaurant, and they'll usually let you stay there until the concert/event is over. It's convenient to the arena and US 131!

This is a really neat place. Big Irish or Celtic or Gaelic signs on the outside had me wondering what this place was but then a smaller Black Rose sign on the door enlightened me. This is a dark wood kind of Irish Pub that is quite tastefully done. No phony Irish name and brass and ferns and that stuff. The walls and ceiling are painted in a color and scheme that remind me more of a mexican cantina than a "local" but that is okay. The mood is right, the Smithwick's was fresh, the help was good.

This is a really nice new Irish pub in downtown GR area. The place is really nice and upscale which seems to translate to the prices of the food which seems a bit high for pub prices. The food was quite good. I had a bowl of Irish stew which was nice and thick and I also had a 1/2lb burger cooked rare which was good enough but not excellent. My only complaint about the food was the fact that they didn't have Shepard's Pie on the menu! I though it was required that Irish pubs serve Shepard's Pie. So that was quite a letdown.
As for the beer, they had around 20 tap handles with some solid choices and about 20 more bottle selections. Nothing out of this world but there were some quality choices. The coolest thing about the beer selection was that they served Smithwicks which you can't find anywhere else in GR (I dont think) and I believe it's quite hard to get anywhere in the midwest. So I had to get that.
Service was good and there was also a decent liquor and wine selection here. If you're looking for an Irish pub in GR with some quality beer choices this is the place to go.
