I was intrigued by someone on here when I saw they have 'had' over 7,000 beers. When I looked him/her up they had been a member for many years, but 400, yes 400 of those beers were written of as 'hads' in the past THREE days (3/3-3/5) and today isn't even over. I'm baffled...

Are people just trying to be cool?
Are you making up for lost time yet still remember every beer you've tasted to be able to rate it?
Any help as to why this would be acceptable?

Maybe just transferring from another source or notes.

I've done this before (not to the tune or 400). It was just simply going through and marking which beers I had before from untappd. I didn't review those beers, though.

To each his own. It's just the internet, and BA is just another site (albeit a great one ) . Don't get bent out of shape about what someone else does.

I have always tried lots of stuff, but only recently took to the habit of writing down everything I'm drinking. I've given thought to going back and try to remember all the beers I've had (I assume the best way would be to go brewery by brewery), but it would be a gargantuan task regardless of method so I decided against it-I also didn't want to prejudice current ratings with my memories of a taste three years ago. It would be nice if there was a way to "hads" something without giving it a score.

^ Probably. I believe most people on here are honest, maybe I'm more impressed by the time it took to do that, well three days is the answer. I guess I would just get to bored to actually go through with it. I'm guilty of post reviewing, but never more than a handful at a time.

even when I go to a tasting and get 30ish new beers in me, I usually remember less than half of them in a nuanced enough way to warrant a fair review. "its brown, its smooth, its malty, its good" is not a contribution to the evaluation of a beer, its a waste of time and megabytes.

I've got about 2200 reviews I've logged on an excel spreadsheet dating back to 2008.

One of these days I'll upload them all to BA, and it will probably be done in huge dumps of hads.

I would figure this person you are referring to is in a similar position.

    Cheers!

I got into Untappd a while back and have been transfering my beers from it into hads.

Yeah, I shouldnt care what other people do. I'm not heated by any means, just shocked is all. completely understandable if taken from notes or another site, but what a tedious task.

I've had over 15,000 beers in the 20+ years I've been involved in this hobby. At first, I collected bottles and took pictures of the beers I drank. However, over time that desire faded and I don't keep track for the most part except in my mind. My wife is either impressed how I remember so many of the beers I have had or thinks I'm nuts - not sure which  I know many people use untapped or this site to keep track of the beers they have had. And who knows, if such sites or apps had been available back in the 90's, I may have done the same. Probably would be fun to go back in time and see my beer history. To each their own though. It's just great to live in such a golden age of beer with so many choices. Cheers!

I started doing the opposite and tallied up the different beers I've had in 2012 and counting.

Recently, I started going through some of my favorite brewers and marking beers that I've had and ranked/notated in some form or another in the past. I don't have extensive notes on these, so I cannot write reviews, but I have enough info to approximate a score. I also try to sample a few "hads" every month and write full reviews. My hope is to one day completely convert all my "hads" into reviews - will I get there? Who knows? Who cares?

This sums up a lot of my point. I joined this site a decade after I drank craft beer. I also thought, maybe I should rate my past beers, but as soon as I went to try, I realized there was no rational way to do so. By brewery is easiest, but quite biased. The next few days I thought about this and what beers got me into craft. #9, Indian brown ale, Brooklyn brown, Ruination, Ten fidy, a few others. At that point in my life they would all be rated the same, but I bought a mix a six of the first beers that got me into craft and there was a vast range of eh/ok to great. So, like untapped, I only rate a beer on here at that exact moment, or the next day after if I took extensive notes (and could reflect upon the next day). I extend my gratitude to those who can accomplish the feat of remembrance of an old beer palate (as I can do so with music) and am no way bashing those who do differently than I, to each there own, and the more variety of beer, the way we drink it, and the way we taste it, the better.

I try the same. Some of the hads I do, I try and revisit with a full review. This actually might be the best way for a good review as you already have an idea, but get to focus on the complexity the brew to a better understanding.

It doesn't bother me personally. What I dislike is when people give obnoxiously low ratings for beers from small/new breweries, thus drastically lowering the score. To me, that is totally lame. If you hate a beer and are going against the grain, you should note why, IMO.

I don't do full reviews on here for now, and usually do all of my "hads" in big clumps. I write them down in a notepad, come on and do like 25 at a time.

This is why I don't like hads being weighted the same as reviews. I don't mind that they are in there, but I think there is less effort put in to a had, and the weighting should reflect that.

I can't stand when someone shits on a beer because they don't like the style.

put me in the "transferrring reviews from untapped." I stopped doing formal reviews a while back and really like the hads feature here, but until BA rolls out mobile capabilities I will continue to check off beers in untapped and enter them in batches here. The only reason I enter beers here is to contribute my opinion on a beers rating vs. tracking my own beers, which is what I use untapped for. If BA comes up with a good app/mobile page, I will probably move towards using BA for both purposes.

I agree with you 100%. It's too easy to scam the system.
