So I'm on my third or fourth bottle of this beer since it's 2013 release and am truly starting to question whether this beer is the 12% abv it claims to be. Not a huge problem as I actually find it an extremely enjoyable and unique DIPA (blows Devil Dancer away, IMO) but was wondering if anyone else shares this opinion? I've had many other beers I would consider world class in the 11-13% abv range and though amazingly well-crafted, you can taste the alcohol very easily in most. Here I taste very little at all compared to say, HopSlam, which is 2% less. Maybe it's only my palate. Thoughts?

I don't understand, it's an incredible drinkable dipa/barley wine straddler. Love this beer.

What's funny is reading the side of the 4pk where it claims 13.6%

Well in years past it has been listed as 13.6%, not listed at all and 12% so I don't think there is any way for anyone to really know what it is. I would just accept that it is potent and delicious and not worry about a couple of points. I know from experience to not have more than one unless I find it on tap again because everything I just said I will ignore.

I was sharing one yesterday at 5 am with a friend before going to the Irish pub at 6 am. Probably because it was the first we had on empty stomachs, we were both feeling nice walking in the cold Milwaukee air.

You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning.

Legally, it has to be extremely close to what the label says.

Then what does it have to be if it's not on the label?

I thought you were going to say they were independently tested in a lab prior to label approval in a strict region and found to be short on alcohol, similar to how DFH World Wide Stout was found to be 15% instead of 18% when it was being approved for Canada.

In the United States, all alcohol must state the alcohol content on the container.

And you're basing this on what exactly? The taste of the beer? Please.

    See this:

    And this:

What you see is what was printed on the bottles when I purchased them 2 years ago at The Beverage Source in Newark. They got the bottles from their Dark Horse distributor from here in Ohio. It does not list ABV ANYWHERE on that bottle, nor did it list the ABV on the cartons the bottles came from.

    Your move, sir

Whether or not the abv is stated on the container (it should be, legally speaking, at least according to government websites that state such things) doesn't matter. The burden of proof to show that the beer isn't the stated ABV is on you. Basing such a statement on how it tastes is total nonsense at best.
