Everyone seems to be up in arms re: single bottles of KBS going for >$10 each, but no one seems to mind that DFH 120-Minute IPA is regularly priced @ $9.99/bottle (at least here in Jersey).

What's the most you would be willing to spend on a single 12-oz bottle of your favorite brew?

I'd say in every thread that's posted about DFH 120 Minute or World Wide Stout (as well as many other threads, of course) somebody - often the OP - is asking about or is upset about the per bottle price of those beers.

No more than 6-7 bucks. I also have no idea where people are paying 10 bucks per bottle of KBS. I paid 6 per and I'll be getting 4 packs for 20 which equals about 5.

Also, $9.99 is a bit much for a beer that has to be aged for years for the ABV to mellow out and for the hops to do the same. Lastly, as much as I wanted to try Allagash FV13, I could not pull the trigger on it because there was no chance I'd pay 13 dollars for something I've yet to try.

I honestly haven't done enough searching, but I definitely believe you. Neither of those (which seem to be more prevalent than KBS) stir up quite the emotion that KBS does, though.

Just imagine if Dogfish Head released a beer brewed with truffles.
Come to think of it, they probably will. And I'll buy it.

I hate spending more than 5 bucks for a single. DFH isnt sold here and I dont care about KBS so I dont have to worry about those. So I dont know yet whats the most Im williing to spend but I probably wouldnt spend 10 bucks. I bitch enough as is about having to pay 5 bucks for a 12oz can of Old Fidy lol.

People get mad over $10 bottles of KBS because a 4 pack goes for ~$20-22, meaning $5 or so a bottle. Even a mark up to $6 or $7 most people are okay with but $10 is a lot and is generally seen as the retailer taking advantage of the situation (though given the demand and the point that the bottles still sell I dont think its taking advantage of it, as the people can walk away at any time). I also know of places where the big DFH beers were $7.99-$8.99 and I definitely wouldnt pay $10 for them. However the 4 packs I have seen of them retail between $28 and $32 putting them right at the $7-8 mark each.

I think it all depends on how much the store gets. Most stores with KBS this year didn't get full cases and were forced to break them into singles to allow more people to get a shot at them. How can you allocate 3 4pks to 3 different customers and tell everyone else that they're SOL? You can't. DFH 120 comes around here a lot more than the KBS does and we actually went through 3-4 cases of 120 this year as opposed to 3 4 pks of KBS.

To stay on topic I would gladly pay 10$ for a single of something.

120 minute and WWS are 18%+ alcohol. i'm not always in favor of "price by ABV", but i mean, the resources going into the beer, and what i'm sure is the trickiness of getting a beer to ferment to that high an ABV... i think it's understandable.

but i mean, i've paid over $30 for a 375mL of Golden Blend, so i clearly have no monetary filter when it comes to single bottles.

At a grocery or liquor store, probably only $3 for a single 12 oz. bottle...I think I've paid $6-$7 for larger bottles, on occasion.

Think of it in terms of servings. It would be perfectly reasonable to split 12oz of DFH 120 between 2-3 people, or a KBS between two people. For beers of that caliber $5-6 per serving is not bat at all IMHO.

Another kind of strange phenomena with these types of beers is that, as the ABV climbs, the price advantage for buying in bottles disappears and even shifts in favor of buying on tap. I drank a 12oz pour of DFH 120 a few weeks back and paid $7 for it. A bottle probably would have cost me $12.99 if I could even get my hands on one.

Well I think about 6oz is right for DFH120. In fact, my wife ordered a pour of Parabola and we each drank half then traded so we could each try both. I didn't feel like I needed any more of either to get the full experience.

Yeah, I was being a little facetious about the "outlandish" bit and subsequently deleted my post. I checked my review of 120 Minute and would actually be inclined to agree that a full 12oz serving is overkill. I'm aging a couple bottles just to see if I like it any better.

$6 is the most I've ever paid for a 12 oz bottle. I actually bought WWS at that price a while back and have paid it for a couple beers since. Depending on what the beer was and how badly I wanted it would decide how much I would pay.

i'd rather have 2 12oz bottles of a big name sour or barrel aged beer than one large format bottle. since a lot of people appear to be OK with 30 bucks for top tier big bottles, they shouldn't think twice about 10-15 for top tier 12oz bottles.

Well lucky you, but here in NYC, there are numerous stores charging $10 a bottle. $6-7 is if you're lucky and get it from a supermarket like Whole Foods. Beer stores are charging mostly $7-8.

I agree with above. It's all about context.

If 120 and KBS were retailing for $10 a bottle, then sure, that's the price. However, people are able to buy KBS for $6-7, then stores are gouging at $10 a bottle. It's how much they're selling over comparative market value.

The cheapest I've seen 120 here is $10 a bottle. That's pretty reasonable.

I've paid 12$ for Uncle Jacobs, odio equum, oud floris, and a little less for the demons of ale. The only regret I have is not buying a second case of UJ.

120 minute is also 18% alcohol, and I have found it for $4.99 a bottle at a bar near where im from. Which is far too dangerous for a fella like me who loves a good deal, and refuses to ever not finish a beer he starts.

This ^^^ ....and I can count on one hand those I consider to be worth even that much. Once you start getting close to a buck an ounce, I can't help but laugh. Don't know that any beer will ever be worth that volume to $ ratio for me.
